Coral diseases represent a significant and increasing threat to coral reefs. Among the most destructive diseases is White Syndrome (WS), which is increasing in distribution and prevalence throughout the Indo-Pacific. The aim of this study was to determine taxonomic and spatial patterns in mortality rates of corals following the 2008 outbreak of WS at Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean. WS mainly affected Acropora plate corals and caused total mortality of 36% of colonies across all surveyed sites and depths. This key has been produced to make identification of Maireana species (the bluebushes) easier in the arid shrublands region of Western Australia. It attempts to use everyday terms rather than technical botanical terms wherever possible and includes an illustrated diagram for ease of identification. A flow diagram - as opposed to traditional botanical keys - allows for visual tracking of steps taken in the key and hence makes it easier to backtrack if the final identified species seems incorrect.Fruit chacters alluded to at various steps in the key are also presented, and drawings of each species fruits are also included …

Floristic Survey Of Northern Sandplains Between Perth And Geraldton, Edward Arnold Griffin

A database of plant lists from over 2,500 sites was compiled from the the Northern Sandplains between Perth and Geraldton. Over 2,500 plant taxa were recorded from the area. Preliminary classification revealed in the order of 500 different floristic types. Analysis of these demonstrated strong regional patterns of floristic composition related to geology and soils. Consistencies in these patterns indicated a need to review the location of some of the botanical district boundaries.
