The Spanish And Mexican Baseline Of California Tree And Shrubland Distributions Since The Late 18th Century, Richard A. Minnich, Brett R. Goforth, Richard Minnich

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Historical distributions of 31 tree species, chaparral, and coastal sage scrub described by Spanish land explorers in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries (1769–1806) and in land grant diseños (1784–1846) are reconstructed at 634 localities across central and southern California. This baseline predates most formal botanical surveys by nearly a century, allowing for assessment of vegetation change over the broadest time frame for comparison with pre-historical evidences and future distributions. Spanish accounts are compared with historical sources in the Mexican era (1821–1848), American settlement (1848–1929), and modern range maps of the 1929–1934 Vegetation Type Map (VTM) survey. The Santa Ana Mountains, as a whole, have been well-studied floristically. Little work, however, has been conducted previously in the southwestern portion of the range which includes the San Mateo Canyon Wilderness Area of the Cleveland National Forest. This study reports the results of our floristic surveys conducted in the wilderness over a three-year period, from December 1991 through October 1994. The study area, encompassing the headwaters of the San Mateo Canyon watershed, is topographically and geologically diverse. Vasicentric Tracheids As A Drought Survival Mechanism In The Woody Flora Of Southern California And Similar Regions; Review Of Vasicentric Tracheids, Sherwin Carlquist

Vasicentric tracheids are defined as tracheids present adjacent to vessels in a wood which also possesses libriform fibers or fiber-tracheids as imperforate tracheary elements. Vasculartracheids would correspond with this definition, but are defined as occurring only in latewood, whereas vasicentric tracheids occur throughout a growth ring or in wood of a diffuse-porous species. V asicentric tracheids offer a subsidiary conducting system which can supply stems and leaves when the vessels to which vasicentric tracheids are adjacent fail because of air embolisms.
