Complex Dynamics And Multistability In A Damped Harmonic Oscillator With Delayed Negative Feedback, Sue Ann Campbell, Jacques Bélair, Toru Ohira, John Milton

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

A center manifold reduction and numerical calculations are used to demonstrate the presence of limit cycles, two-tori, and multistability in the damped harmonic oscillator with delayed negative feedback. This model is the prototype of a mechanical system operating with delayed feedback. Complex dynamics are thus seen to arise in very plausible and commonly occurring mechanical and neuromechanical feedback systems.

Fiber Source Characteristics And The Effects Of Recycling On Bod And Cod Effluent Levels In Corrugated Boxboard, Craig Mefford Dec 1995

Fiber Source Characteristics And The Effects Of Recycling On Bod And Cod Effluent Levels In Corrugated Boxboard, Craig Mefford

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The topic of waste loading for recycle paper mills is an important issue to our industry today. As of last year the EPA has proposed the cluster rule, which suggests that the BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) and COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) loading limits are being lowered encouraging use of lower effluent loading material. The main purposes of this thesis was to focus on the effects that recycling Korean Boxboard, American Boxboard, and high yield SW Kraft has on raw waste loading in a boardmill and to analyze the characteristics of these recycled materials. This will be accomplished by separating our …

The Effects Of A Surfactant On The Pulp Properties On Non-Sulfur Semichemical Pulps, Tim Schemanski Dec 1995

The Effects Of A Surfactant On The Pulp Properties On Non-Sulfur Semichemical Pulps, Tim Schemanski

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Semichemical pulping involves both mechanical and chemical pulping techniques. In semichemical pulping the liquor is in contact with the chips for a relatively short period of time. The faster with liquor can penetrate the chips before they see mechanical action, the better the pulp properties. The effects of adding a surfactant to the liquor was studied. It was found that the anionic ethoxylated surfactant which was added at the addition rate of 5#/ton to non-sulfur semi-chemical pulping liquor increased the lignin content of the resulting pulp and lowered the tensile strength.

The Effect Of Internally-Filled Pulp On Recycling, Anne Spruit Dec 1995

The Effect Of Internally-Filled Pulp On Recycling, Anne Spruit

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Recycling is an area of interest for much of the industry because of all the environmental concerns with the cutting down of trees, and the pulping operations to make paper. However, virgin fibers are still desired because they make stronger paper. Virgin fibers have a higher swelling capability than recycled fibers, that accounts for better bonding. Paper's physical properties also decrease rapidly as filler is substituted for fiber. Filler impairs interfiber bonding by preventing close contact with fibers. Filler is added to paper to increase opacity and brightness. However, there is a poor retention of filler in the sheet during …

The Effect Of Viscosity And Polymer Additives On Fluorescent Dyes In Latex Coatings, Mark P. Comensoli Dec 1995

The Effect Of Viscosity And Polymer Additives On Fluorescent Dyes In Latex Coatings, Mark P. Comensoli

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Fluorescent Whitening Agents (FWAs) are commonly used in many areas of the pulp and paper industry. FWAs are also known as Optical Brightening Agents (OBAs) and generically as fluorescent dyes. Nearly one-third of all FWAs manufactured are used in the pulp and paper industry. FWAs work by converting ultraviolet light into blue-white light in the visible region. When FWAs are used in coatings with latex binders, the fluorescent dyes have a tendency to migrate toward the basesheet during drying. This is due to mainly to the lack of suitable carrier for the dye. Previous research has shown that the addition …

Characterization Of Effluent From Dioxirane Bleaching Sequences, Holly L. Dunnill Dec 1995

Characterization Of Effluent From Dioxirane Bleaching Sequences, Holly L. Dunnill

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Pulp bleaching is a multi-staged process which uses different chemicals and conditions in each stage, with washing performed between these stages. With chlorine compounds being the most widely used bleaching agents, the water from bleaching and washing stages subsequently contains a high chloride content as well as chloro-organic compounds which makes them incompatible with pulping chemical recovery processes. They are, therefore, discharged as wastewater. This leads to the need for regulations regarding the effluent quality of the wastewater. The purpose of this study is to compare effluents from various dimethyl dioxirane bleaching sequences with those of commonly used industry bleaching …

Fall Field Report, August-November 1995, W. Ross Silcock Dec 1995

Fall Field Report, August-November 1995, W. Ross Silcock

Nebraska Bird Review

Generally this was a "normal" fall, if there is such a thing; a few new early and late dates but no pattern, a few notable species showing or absent, and a few rarities. Grebes and loons were in evidence, including Red-throated and Pacific Loons and Red-necked Grebe, but geese did not arrive (or were not reported) in great numbers by the end of the period. The less common herons were in good numbers, notably Snowy Egret, and also Little Blue Heron and Yellow-crowned Night-Heron. Notable for their absence were the thrushes; few Swainson's were found, and no Gray-cheeked, Veery, or …

A Possible Breeding Record For Clark's Nutcracker, Diana F. Tomback Dec 1995

A Possible Breeding Record For Clark's Nutcracker, Diana F. Tomback

Nebraska Bird Review

In the late morning of 17 May, 1987, my husband and I drove into Sowbelly Canyon, which is in the Pine Ridge area in northwestern Nebraska. In the canyon, about 3.3 miles from Harrison, we were in a ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa)–riparian community ecotone, and were startled to hear and see a flock of Clark's Nutcrackers (Nucifraga columbiana). About 30 adults were perched on branches or flying about the tops of the ponderosa pines. From the abundance of cones, it was clear that there had been a good seed crop the previous fall. Some of the …

Biological Determinism And The Human Genome Project: Is The Past Prologue?, Alexandra Dawn Breen

Theses & Honors Papers

In 1989, The National Institutes of Health, in collaboration with the United States Department of Energy, launched a three billion dollar project that could potentially change the way we view human life. The purpose of the project is to map every gene on every chromosome of the human DNA. The Human Genome Project, as it is referred to, is scheduled for completion by the year 2005. The frank reality of the Human Genome Project is that it will indeed offer some real and measurable benefit to different types of people, including some of those inflicted with fatal diseases and disorders; …

Regulation Of Leukotriene C4 Biosynthesis In Calcium Ionphore A23187-Challeneged August Rat Peritoneal Leukocytes, James M. Huebner

Masters Theses

Leukotriene (LT) C4 is a potent myotropic product of arachidonic acid 5-lipoxygenation that is thought to play a role in the pathophysiology of immediate hypersensitivity reactions and inflammation. We designed the present study to evaluate the capacity of August (AUG) rat mixed peritoneal leukocytes to generate LTC4 when challenged with different concentrations of the Ca2+ ionophore A23187 and to test the hypothesis that LTC4 biosynthesis is regulated via a protein kinase C (PKC)-dependent mechanism. The AUG rat, which has a spontaneously high number of peritoneal eosinophils that can be harvested by a simple lavage procedure, is …

Connexin32 Is A Myelin-Related Protein In The Pns And Cns, Steven S. Scherer, Suzanne M. Deschênes, Yi-Tian Xu, Judith B. Grinspan, Kenneth H. Fischbeck, David L. Paul

Biology Faculty Publications

We have examined the expression of a gap junction protein, connexin32 (Cx32), in Schwann cells and oligodendrocytes. In peripheral nerve, Cx32 is found in the paranodal myelin loops and Schmidt-Lanterman incisures of myelinating Schwann cells, and the levels of Cx32 protein and mRNA change in parallel with those of other myelin-related genes during development, Wallerian degeneration, and axonal regeneration. In the central nervous system, Cx32 is found in oligodendrocytes and their processes, but not in compact myelin, and the levels of Cx32 protein and mRNA increase during development in parallel with those of the other myelin genes. Thus, Cx32 is …

Morphometric, Isozyme And Random Amplified Polymorphic Dna (Rapd) : Analysis Of Sarotherodon Mossambicus Populations In Java, Indonesia, Yoedono Sovyanhadi

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The tilapia fish Sarotherodon mossambicus (Teleostei, Cichlidae) is an important protein source for Indonesians, is a strong competitor with some endemic species and .readily hybridizes with other tilapias. A base line assessment of the present genetic diversity of these populations in Indonesia was conducted to facilitate the management of this species. This study compared the effectiveness of the 3 techniques (morphometric, isozyme and RAPD) in revealing differences within and among 9 Javanese populations. The data were also used to estimate the rate of divergence among the populations.

Morphometric analysis showed significant size and shape differences among the populations. Isozyme and …

Simulation Modeling Within Workflow Technology, John A. Miller, Amit P. Sheth, Krzysztof J. Kochut, Xuzhong Wang, Arun Murugan

Kno.e.sis Publications

This paper presents an approach for integrating simulation modeling and analysis capabilities within the workflow management system (WFMS) being developed in the Large Scale Distributed Information Systems (LSDIS) Lab at the University of Georgia. Simulation modeling can be used for studying the efficiency of workflow designs as well as studying the general performance and reliability of WFMSs. We also discuss the importance of using sophisticated monitoring and animation capabilities, and the use of workflow management technology to advance simulation technology itself. Finally, we demonstrate a sample simulation where tasks and task managers are simulated.

Reverse Osmosis Treatment Of Deinking Effluents, Lei Zhao Dec 1995

Reverse Osmosis Treatment Of Deinking Effluents, Lei Zhao

Masters Theses

The application of the reverse osmosis process for treatment of preclarified deinking effluent was studied for its efficiency and capacity to remove the total suspended and dissolved solids. Seven coagulants and flocculents were studied in the pretreatment to determine the best coagulant. Two variables, temperature and coagulant dose, were studied to determine the optimum conditions. For the reverse osmosis treatment, two types of thin film composite membranes, sea water and brackish water were used in the research. A set of orthogonal experiments and regression analyses were conducted to study the effects of pressure, temperature, feed concentration, and feed pH on …

Identification Of An Insulin-Responsive Element In The Rat Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Gene, Sheri Lynn Holmen Dec 1995

Identification Of An Insulin-Responsive Element In The Rat Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Gene, Sheri Lynn Holmen

Masters Theses

The expression of several genes has been shown to be either positively or negatively regulated by insulin at the transcriptional level, however no single insulin responsive DNA element has yet been identified. The transcription factors responsible for stimulation or inhibition of gene expression by insulin also remain to be identified. In recent years, expression of the gene for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) in primary rat hepatocytes has been found to be influenced by hormones such as insulin, dexamethosone, and glucagon. The molecular mechanism(s) however, underlying hormonal regulation of G6PDH gene transcription remains to be elucidated. The focus of this study was …

Modified Model For Transient Response Of Mrna Synthesis To Magnetic Field Exposure, Timothy W. Crosnoe Dec 1995

Modified Model For Transient Response Of Mrna Synthesis To Magnetic Field Exposure, Timothy W. Crosnoe

Theses and Dissertations

It is a well-known fact that high frequency, or radio frequency, radiation can be directly harmful to biological tissue. The radiation frequencies to which humans are most exposed, however, are the extremely low frequencies, or ELFs. To date there has been no definitive measure for predicting the ability of low frequency electromagnetic radiation to cause adverse biological effects. Two specific measures, average magnetic field and kinetic index, have been used in studies to determine if they are useful predictors of adverse effects, specifically leukemia. Unfortunately, both have shown only marginal results. This thesis analyzed and improved the kinetic index measure …

Crop Tree Management Of Upland Hardwoods In West Tennessee, David O'Neal Dec 1995

Crop Tree Management Of Upland Hardwoods In West Tennessee, David O'Neal

Masters Theses

A 40-year-old upland hardwood stand in west Tennessee was selected to test the effectiveness of crop tree management techniques. The stand consisted of 20 acres with each acre having the potential to contain 36 crop trees. Treatments consisted of: 1) a crown release, 2) fertilization (150 lbs. N and 35 lbs. P205 per acre) and 3) a combined release and fertilizer treatment.

A severe ice storm struck west Tennessee the winter following the study's initiation. Results indicated that release greatly increased a crop tree's susceptibility to severe ice damage and that black cherry (Prunus serotina Ehrh.) …

Gis Modeling Of Forest Cover Distributions In A Southern Appalachian Watershed, Daniel Thomas Rutledge Dec 1995

Gis Modeling Of Forest Cover Distributions In A Southern Appalachian Watershed, Daniel Thomas Rutledge

Masters Theses

This study develops a method to model forest cover distributions in the Little Tennessee River Watershed in Macon County, North Carolina using a geographic information system (GIS). The model employs common environmental variables, e.g. elevation, aspect, and slope, and a newly developed metric called a topographic index. The topographic index quantifies landscape form to reflect the degree of site convexity or concavity. To generate index values, the GIS sums relative aspect differences between all adjacent cells and the center cell in a neighborhood analysis. To determine predominant community types and their environmental ranges in the study area, I surveyed canopy …
