1-Nitronaphthalene Causes Ultrastructural Changes Primarily In Nonciliated Bronchiolar Epithelium Followed By Ciliated Epithelium In The Rat, John-Michael Sauer

Masters Theses

This study describes morphological changes in the lung at several time intervals following a single injection of 1-Nitronaphthalene (100 mg/kg intraperitoneal) in male Sprague-Dawley rats using transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Dilation of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondrial distension in the nonciliated bronchiolar (Clara) cells was apparent as early as 1 hour after injection, while adjacent ciliated cell showed minimal changes. At 6 hours, when respiratory distress was apparent in the animals, Clara and ciliated cells exhibited chromatin clumping, loss of mitochondrial cristae and cytoplasmic vacuolization. Also at 6 hours, the interstitial area around the terminal bronchioles was infiltrated …

Effect Of Age On The Structure Of Meissner Corpuscles In Forepad Digital Pads Of Mice, Roger C. Mathewson Jun 1991

Effect Of Age On The Structure Of Meissner Corpuscles In Forepad Digital Pads Of Mice, Roger C. Mathewson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Meissner corpuscles in forepaw digital pads of albino mice were examined by light and electron microscopy to determine structural age-changes. After 1.5 months of age, no intraepidermal nerve fibers were seen extending from corpuscles. From young (1.5-6 months) to middle age (9-15 months), corpuscles became larger and more complex, gaining more horizontally arranged terminals, associated lamellae and connective tissue. At old age (18-26 months), corpuscles became small and lobulated, appearing disorganized. There was no loosening of the corpuscle-epidermal interface. An increase in collagenous connective tissue and basal lamina duplication occurred with advancing age. Ultrastructural age-changes consisted of disorganization of the …

Molecular Genetics Of Endocrine Induced Regression Of Mouse Leydig Cell Tumors, Milton Rolando Drachenberg Jun 1991

Molecular Genetics Of Endocrine Induced Regression Of Mouse Leydig Cell Tumors, Milton Rolando Drachenberg

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Chronic estrogen treatment results in malignant Leydig cell tumor formation in genetically susceptible strains of mice. The hypothesis that the mechanism of estrogen induced carcinogenesis includes a gene amplification event was tested using this in vivo endocrine carcinogenesis model. High molecular weight DNA isolated from liver, hyperplastic chryptorchid testes, primary Leydig cell tumors and transplanted tumor lines progressing to estrogen nondependence for growth, was studied using Southern blot analysis and the in-gel renaturation technique to identify amplification of characterized and anonymous sequences. No consistent gene amplification event could be demonstrated either in carcinogenesis or tumor progression to an estrogen nondependent …

Anticarcinogenic, Antitumor, And Antifungal Properties Of Allium Sativum (Garlic), Padma P. Tadi

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In this study the antimutagenic/anticarcinogenic, immune enhancing, antitumor and antifungal effects of a crude extract and organosulfur compounds of garlic were determined. Diallyl sulfide (DAS), and ajoene each at 100 /xg/ml, and garlic extract (GE, 12.5 mg/ml) inhibited rat liver 9000 X g supernatant (S- 9) dependent mutagenesis in Salmonella typhimurium TA100 induced by either aflatoxin B1 (AFB^ or benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P). The garlic compounds were shown to inhibit the binding of [3H]AFB1 to calf thymus DNA and the formation of specific AFB1-DNA adducts. These effects on mutagenesis and DNA binding correlated with an inhibition of …

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of specific cell types and structures at the active tooth movement site in corticotomized and non-corticotomized specimens obtained from a previous study, and to consider the hypothesis that corticotomy facilitated orthodontics is efficacious due to an inflammatory response rather than tooth-bone block movement. Specimens from 3 monkeys, each of which had a treatment and control quadrant in each arch, were sectioned, mounted on glass slides, and stained with Giemsa, haematoxylin, and Safranin stains. A histomorphometric analysis was performed with DataVoice™, a voice activated computer system which allowed for digitization of …

Aerotaxis In Halobacterium Halobium, Jemima Clara Lindbeck Jun 1991

Aerotaxis In Halobacterium Halobium, Jemima Clara Lindbeck

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Aerotaxis, previously studied in eubacteria was investigated in the archaebacterium Halobacterium halobium. A quantitative temporal assay for aerotaxis of H. halobium was developed using computer assisted motion analysis. Aerotaxis was most pronounced in early log phase cultures. Peak aerotaxis was found to coincide with peak respiration consistent with a model in which respiration is required for aerotaxis. In a spatial assay a mutant strain lacking the proton motive force (pmf)-generating pigments, bacteriorhodopsin (bR) and halorhodopsin (hR), exhibited enhanced aerotaxis bands relative to the bR+hR+ parent. The enhanced aerotaxis in the mutant cells was not due solely to …

The Feasibility Of Foamed Ink Use In Flexographic Printing, Anthony Malerich May 1991

The Feasibility Of Foamed Ink Use In Flexographic Printing, Anthony Malerich

Honors Theses

Flexographic and rotogravure printing are two of the three predominant printing processes; the other is offset lithography. They are very similar in that they each transfer a very fluid, low viscosity ink from an ink fountain to an engraved cylinder. Foamed ink is a completely water based liquid ink that is foamed by the introduction of air at press side, and presents numerous advantages over conventional organic solvent based and water based inks. The prime advantage is that foamed inks are a completely aqueous, environmentally safe system. Another benefit is the cost savings associated with foamed ink. Ink consumption is …

An Analysis Of The Ph Tolerance And Substrate Preference Of Isolated Skeletal Muscle Mitochondria From Bufo Marinus And Rana Catesbeiana, Jeffrey Mark Duerr

Dissertations and Theses

The concept of maximal oxygen consumption (VO2 max) implies that there is a limit to the amount of oxygen that can be consumed by an organism in a given time. Many attempts have been made to delineate exactly what factor or factors are limiting to VO2 max. Current models focus on the steps over which oxygen must traverse in order to get from the ambient air to the mitochondria. However, no model has addressed the issue of whether or not carbon dioxide flux may impose a limit to VO2 max. Impedance of carbon dioxide flux may have …

The Demographic And Morphological Characteristics Of Black Bears In The Smoky Mountains, Peter Kleppinger Mclean May 1991

The Demographic And Morphological Characteristics Of Black Bears In The Smoky Mountains, Peter Kleppinger Mclean

Doctoral Dissertations

Data on age, sex, body measurements, survival, and reproductive condition were collected from 1702 black bears (Ursus americanus) trapped in the Smoky Mountains (SM), 1972-1989. The age structure suggested a lightly to moderately exploited bear population. Bears of Great Smoky Mountain National Park (GSMNP or Park) were significantly (P = 0.026) older (mean = 4.52 yr) than those of Pisgah (3.86 yr) National Forest (P < 0.076). SM females had a mean minimum reproductive age of 4.2 yr, birth interval of 2.4 yr, and litter size of 2.0 cubs. The percentage of lactating females was significantly associated with age (X2 = 20.6, 2 df, P < 0.001), and lactation rates were significantly related to white oak mast production (r2 = 0.51, P < 0.01). The annual mortality rate was 26% and was lowest for Park bears (22%) and highest for those of the national forests (30%). Density ranged from 0.09 to 0.35 bears/km2, and the intrinsic rate of growth (2-11%) indicated a slightly to moderately increasing population.

Both extrinsic and intrinsic factors govern the population. Food …

Investigating The Viability Of Yeast Expressing Histone From Extrachromosomal Dna : Progress In Construction Of A Plasmid Bearing One Copy Of Each Yeast Histone Gene, Ralph Donaldson Hellams Jr.

Master's Theses

Much of the current information on histones has been based on in vitro studies. The original goal of this research was to construct a mutant strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae containing all chromosomal copies of the yeast histone genes made nonfunctional. This project would demonstrate whether such a strain could be rescued by a plasmid carrying the wild-type copies of the four core histone genes. Furthermore, this yeast strain construct would allow future investigations to take advantage of histone mutant analysis in vivo. The critical step in beginning this work was the construction of a plasmid which contained the genes …

The Effect Of Wet Pressing On Filler Stratification, Patrick T. Gish May 1991

The Effect Of Wet Pressing On Filler Stratification, Patrick T. Gish

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Research was conducted to determine the effect of press loading upon filler stratification with the intention of observing the development of a stratified sheet.

Press conditions were held constant with the exception of pressure applied to the sheet. The sheet was then split and examined for filler content. The paper tested was highly refined, very moist, and of a heavy basis weight.

Results indicated a gradual trend of increased stratification with increased press loading. Filler moved toward the direction that water was leaving the sheet.

Photosynthetic Capacity, Leaf Size And Plant Height In Wheat (Triticum Aestivum L.), Deborah L. Bishop

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Plant breeders often examine leaf size, plant height and photosynthetic capacity in an effort to increase wheat yield. This study was concerned with the relationship between these parameters in dwarf and semidwarf wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L.) with a wide range in flag leaf size. Photosynthetic capacity was measured at anthesis using photosynthesis versus intercellular CO2 response curves to determine maximum photosynthetic rate and ribulose-1,5- bisphosphate carboxylase efficiency. Leaf area, chlorophyll concentration, stomatal density, interveinal distance and dry mass partitioning were also examined. Smaller flag leaves had greater carboxylation efficiency and closer vein spacing. Dwarf wheat had higher chlorophyll …

Reproductive Strategies Of Northern Goshawks And Cooper's Hawks In North-Central New Mexico, Patricia L. Kennedy May 1991

Reproductive Strategies Of Northern Goshawks And Cooper's Hawks In North-Central New Mexico, Patricia L. Kennedy

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

I assumed that the reproductive strategies of the two Accipiter species investigated in this study, the northern Goshawk (A. gentilis) and the Cooper's hawk (A. cooperii), would be similar to the strategies of other monogamous raptors with sex role partitioning. Any differences in the species' reproductive strategies, particularly hunting strategies, were expected to be a function of their size differences. Contrary to predictions, results indicated that, in north-central New Mexico during brood rearing, both species had similar hunting strategies and utilized similar prey species. These results also indicated that the reproductive strategies of the Cooper's hawk …
