Turkish Journal of Botany

Prospero seisumsianum (Ruk?ans & Zetterl.) Yıldırım, a species recently described in southeastern Turkey, was recorded for the first time in the flora of Iraq based on samples collected from the Amadya and Duhok areas (northern Iraq). Our contribution here will be to find out more about its description, cytology, and chorology. The specimen collected from the Mesopotamian dry plain differs slightly from those collected from the mountainous Zagros forest area, but converges after a cultivation period. Both are treated here as P. seisumsianum and have the same genome size (2C = 8.77 ± 0.24 pg) corresponding to a diploid level. …

Notes On The Genus Frondaria (Orchidaceae) With Description Of New Species, Dariusz Szlachetko, Marta Kolanowska, Max Rykaczewski

Turkish Journal of Botany

The specific diversity of Neotropical orchid genus Frondaria is evaluated based on morphological data. Frondaria was considered a monospecific taxon for years; however, our recent studies on Andean orchids indicated that it is actually much more variable. Within Colombian material, we found a species which does not fit the morphological description of F. caulescens and described it here as a new species named F. colombiana . The novelty is characterized by inflorescence being three times as long as the ramicaul, the tridentate leaf apex with middle tooth as long as lateral ones, papillate apices of sepals, and oblong-ligulate lip middle …

On The Identity Of The Turkish Endemic Cyperus Noeanus (Cyperaceae), Attila Mesterházy, Filip Verloove

Turkish Journal of Botany

Cyperus noeanus Boiss. is known only from the type specimen that was collected in Central Anatolia by Wilhelm Noë. It is considered an endemic species in Turkey. A detailed morphological study of the type specimen and comparison with similar related species in section Compressi Kunth demonstrated that the morphological characters of C. noeanus entirely fall within the range of characters of C. glaber L., which is a widely scattered species in Turkey, and widespread in S Europe and SW Asia as well. Based on our comparative study, we suggest that C. noeanus should be treated as a synonym of C. …

Systematics Value Of Micromorphological And Palynological Characters In Stenocephalum Sch.Bip. (Vernonieae, Asteraceae), Maria Betiana Angulo, Laura Chalup, Massimiliano Dematteis

Turkish Journal of Botany

Micromorphological and palynological characters of all Stenocephalum Sch.Bip. species (Vernonieae, Asteraceae) were analyzed to evaluate their reliability as taxonomic markers at generic level and discussed in relation to other genera of the subtribe Lepidaploinae. Characters such as pubescence of corollas and cypselae showed glandular and nonglandular trichomes allowing differentiation among related species. Apical appendages without glandular trichomes, caudate anthers, and carpopodium structure are common characteristics among Stenocephalum species. With the exceptions of S. megapotamicum and S. tragiaefolium, almost all species of the genus showed style bases without basal nodes for the first time. Crystals on the fruits wall were also …
