The Effect Of Foliar Fertilization On Soybean Yield And Leaf Necrosis, Robert Jay Goos Jan 1978

The Effect Of Foliar Fertilization On Soybean Yield And Leaf Necrosis, Robert Jay Goos

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) is a very important world crop. The seed is rich in both protein and oil, making it a valuable human food resource. Many scientists believe that there are physiological barriers preventing increased soybean yields. Any agronomic discovery that would consistently increase soybean yields would be important to world food production. One possible yield barrier in soybeans concerns the mineral nutrition of the plant during the seed-filling stages of growth. During this period of growth, translocation of N, P, K, and S from the plant foliage to the developing seed occurs, accompanied by a virtual …

An Evaluation Of High Protein Oat Forage For Dairy Cattle, Thomas Lee Schroeder

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As world population climbs toward the 6 billion mark predicted for the turn of the century, it becomes of grave importance that we meet the challenge of human food production. In developed nations, urban sprawl is devouring land once used for agricultural purposes, while in underdeveloped nations, malnutrition is commonplace. The technology of the 21st century will need to develop new methods and means whereby grains can be increasingly used to provide the nutritional needs of humans. Therefore, animal scientists must work toward even more efficient utilization of roughages by ruminant animals. Efficient conversion of roughages to high quality human …

Reasons Why Cows Were Removed From The Sdsu Fairy Herd 1. Discriminant Analysis To Classify Cows With Or Without Reproductive Problems, Fred Tidemann Jan 1978

Reasons Why Cows Were Removed From The Sdsu Fairy Herd 1. Discriminant Analysis To Classify Cows With Or Without Reproductive Problems, Fred Tidemann

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the keys to financial success in the dairy business is the ability of management to detect herd problems and correct them instead of culling cows. It is well known that the average productive life of the dairy cow is less than 4 yr, which is short compared with her potential life. Involuntary removal of cows causes economic loss directly as a result of its effect on yearly milk production, increased replacement cost, and indirectly because the potential selection differential is reduced with premature loss of high producing cows. The degree of culling is related to important economic considerations …

Effects Of Strain On Response Of Laying Hens To Low Protein Diets And Amino Acid Supplements, Ali B. Kashani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Corn is by far the most widely used cereal grain in the United States for poultry feeding. In addition to its high energy content, corn provides adequate amounts of the essential fatty acids for maximum rates of growth and egg production. Palatability and ample xanthophyll and provitamin A contents of fresh corn are some o the other contributing factors for its popularity in livestock feeding. The most serious limitation in the nutritional value of corn as well as other cereal grains lies in the fact that they are low in both quantity and quality of protein. It has been a …

Partial Characterization And Comparison Of Rhizobia From Astragalus Flexuosus Glycyrrhiza Lepidota, And Trifolium Spp., Elmer L. Eide

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Biological nitrogen fixation, a means of alleviating our increasing dependence on synthesized nitrogen fertilizers, is being studied with renewed interest. Production of nitrogen fertilizer requires large amounts of natural gas and other non-renewable energy sources, while the energy for biological nitrogen fixation is derived either directly or indirectly from photosynthesis. With only limited supplies of natural gas and an increasing population, and thus increasing demand for food, the advantages and even necessity of understanding and enhancing biological nitrogen is obvious. The nitrogenase enzyme complex which catalyzes the reduction of dinitrogen to ammonia is possessed by a limited number of species …

Since the time from the end of heat …

Primary Productivity In Lake Cochrane, South Dakota, During And After Sediment-Control Dam Construction, Randall Francis Brich Jan 1978

Primary Productivity In Lake Cochrane, South Dakota, During And After Sediment-Control Dam Construction, Randall Francis Brich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Lake Cochrane was selected for this study because of its history of superior water transparency (Haertel 1972, 1976b). Significant amounts of silt and chemicals enter the lake with runoff at 3 locations (Haertel unpublished data). Restriction or impediment of runoff at these locations should result in improved water transparency (Haertel 1976b, Siegel 1975). Therefore, East Dakota Conservancy Sub-District and the South Dakota Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Forestry decided to impede runoff waters by means of 3 sediment-control dams incorporated into the perimeter road system of the lake and financed through a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (Siegel 1975) …

Partial Purification Of Heat Stable Enterotoxin Produced By Escherichia Coli Isolated From A Case Of Porcine Colibacillosis, Lee Ann Zochert Swanson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Colibacillosis (CB) in livestock is an economically important disease caused by the bacterium Escherichia coli. It is estimated that nearly one third of all baby pigs born in South Dakota die prior to weaning, and one fourth of these deaths is believed to be caused by CB (62). Similarly, it has been stated that 6 to 20% of calves born alive die from this disease (3). The term colibacillosis encompasses a group of diseases caused by E. coli in neonatal and weaned animals and humans (3). The several different types of CB are due to the differences in tissue localization …

Effect Of Heat Treatment On Protein Quality And Utilization Of Soybean And Sunflower Meals By Dairy Cattle, Mohammad Ahrar Jan 1978

Effect Of Heat Treatment On Protein Quality And Utilization Of Soybean And Sunflower Meals By Dairy Cattle, Mohammad Ahrar

Effect of heat treatment on soybean and sunflower meal proteins were studied using in vitro and in vivo techniques. In experiment I, soybean meal (SBM) and sunflower meal (SFM) were subjected to steam heating about 120 C for 25 to 30 seconds using a commercial cooker extruder. The heat treatment was designed to reduce solubility of the SBM and SFM in the rumen, thereby allowing more soybean meal protein and sunflower meal protein to be undigestible in the rumen but still digestible in the lower digestive tract when fed to cattle. Solubilities of protein in SBM and SFM were reduced …

Performance Of A Diurnally Tracking Solar Energy-Intensifier, Calvin E. Siegel Jan 1978

Performance Of A Diurnally Tracking Solar Energy-Intensifier, Calvin E. Siegel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The United States agricultural system provides numerous opportunities in which solar energy can be utilized. Low to moderate temperature rise collectors can provide a large percentage of the energy requirements normally met by using high quality fossil fuels. As world demand for food production increases due to a growing population, alternative sources of energy need to be developed and applied as substitutes for these increasingly scarce fossil fuels. Agriculture offers practical advantages for the use of solar heat energy because there exists sufficient area for solar collectors and a wide range of temperature applications on most farmsteads. Demand for energy …
