In this presentation, I explore the challenges associated with long distance women’s road cycle racing from a variety of perspectives, including athletes, managers, promoters, and governing bodies. This exploration covers several decades, c. 1950s - 1980s, from some of the earliest sanctioned international competitions to the inclusion of women’s cycling into the Olympic Games. Women in many endurance sports, including cross-country skiing and running, have faced barriers related to sex discrimination in the larger society and in maledominated sport organizations, and cycling falls into this same tradition. Area Of Specialization: Endocrinology And Metabolism Dr. Braun Is Currently Focused On Understanding How Exercise, Dietary Energy/Composition And/Or Pharmacological Agents Interact To Mediate Insulin Resistance And The Risk For Type-2 Diabetes. The American Diabetes Association Is Our Major Source Of Funding For Work On How The Combination Of Exercise And/Or The Drug Metformin Impact Glucose Metabolism And Insulin Sensitivity At The Cellular And Whole-Body Levels. We Also Use Stable Isotope Tracers To Measure The Regulation Of Substrate Kinetics During Exercise. Results from the Diabetes Prevention Program highlight the effectiveness of metformin or regular physical activity in the prevention of type 2 diabetes. Independently, metformin and exercise increase insulin sensitivity, but they have not been studied in combination. To assess the combined effects, insulinresistant subjects (n = 9) matched for weight, body fat, and aerobic fitness were studied before any treatment (B), after 2–3 wk of 2,000 mg/day metformin (MET), and after metformin plus 40 min of exercise at 65% V ˙ O2peak (MET + Ex).
