Among the filariaris causing mosquitoes Culex fatigans is considered an important intermediate host in South-East Asia. Toxicity of ethanolic extract of neem leaves (NLX) is compared with an organophosphate pesticide malathion (57 E.C.). The LC 50 value of malathion (Sisthion) determined presently is 0.45 ppm against late 3rd instar larvae of Culex fatigans (wild strain) and of neem fraction (NLX) is 390 ppm by standard WHO method.

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The pineapple mealy bug ( Dismycoccus brevipes) infestation is reported for the first time from Pakistan, Ratoon, crownlet, slip and sucker plants were found infested by this bug. A total of 3464 bugs were collected from these plants with a mean value of 43.3 bugs/plant. Two-third (2291) of the bug population was found on the roots while one-third (1173) were recovered from the leaf base of the pineapple.

Productivity Enhancement Of Rice Crop Yield Through Prevention Of Losses Due To Wild Boars In Pakistan, Abdul Rauf Khokhar, Syed Waqar Ali Rizvi

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The wild boar control trials were conducted in rice fields in the districts of Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Faisalabad and Gujrat, covering an overall area of 3000 hectares. Zinc phosphide encapsulated bait was used resulting in 80-100% reductions in wild boar activity. In addition, the impact of the boar control work on the crop productivity was evaluated by interviewing 391 farmers selected randomly from the trial areas. The average farm size of the sampled farmers was 426.30 hectares. The average yield loss due to wild boars was estimated at 22.75%. By applying newly developed zinc phosphide capsular technology, 502.17 mt. of rice …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In this study, the Turkish population of Rattus norvegicus and Rattus rattus were studied with regard to external, cranial, phalli, bacula and tooth crown morphology and karyotype. External, internal and karyologic characteristics of R. norvegicus were found to be consistent with previously published results. Additionally, it was determined that there are striking color variations in the dorsal and ventral fur of R. rattus and that crown morphology is not a definitive characteristic distinguishing these species because of connected lobes in old specimens. According to the karyological studies, the diploid chromosome numbers and fundamental numbers of R. norvegicus and R. rattus …

Survival And Growth Of Corophium Volutator In Organically Enrichedsediment: A Comparison Of Laboratory And Field Experiments, Levent Bat, Dave Raffaelli Jan 1998

Survival And Growth Of Corophium Volutator In Organically Enrichedsediment: A Comparison Of Laboratory And Field Experiments, Levent Bat, Dave Raffaelli

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In this study, the amphipod Corophium volutator (Pallas) was evaluated as test organisms for use in sediment toxicity tests by adapting standard protocols for conducting 10-day and 28-day sediment toxicity tests. Combine laboratory and field bioas-says showed that Corophium can survive in organically enriched sediment if they have no alternative, suggesting that Corophium is relatively tolerant of organically enriched sediment. Neither were there effects on emergence or reburying behaviour. Therefore this bioassay is considered inappropriate for estimating the quality of organically enricment sediment.

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In this study, the short-term toxicities of sodium lauryl sulphate (an anionic detergent) and potassium dichromate on instar I and mixed instar II-III nauplii populations of Artemia were investigated. The comparisons between our results and the ARC-test (Artemia Reference Center) protocol show our experiments to be acceptable for acute toxicity standardization.

Caribbean Spiny Lobster And Their Molluscan Prey: Are Top-Down Forces Key In Structuring Prey Assemblages In A Florida Bay Seagrass System, Martha Nizinski

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Relative importance of predator-prey dynamics and several environmental variables in structuring gastropod and bivalve diversity and distribution was investigated in the subtropical seagrass and macroalgal community of Florida Bay, a highly productive system and primary nursery and foraging ground for finfish and invertebrate predators, including the numerically dominant Caribbean spiny lobster, Panulirus argus. The molluscan assemblage, a primary food source for P. argus in particular, is speciose (75 gastropod and 25 bivalve species) and a significant component of epifaunal and infaunal invertebrate assemblages within Florida Bay. Two experimental areas, located within separate basins and each comprised of two experimental sites, …

Phenotypic Clines In The Intertidal Snail Littorina Obtusata: The Role Of Water Temperature And Predator Effluent As Inducers Of Phenotypic Plasticity And Associated Trade-Offs In Shell Form, Geoffrey Clayton Trussell Jan 1998

Phenotypic Clines In The Intertidal Snail Littorina Obtusata: The Role Of Water Temperature And Predator Effluent As Inducers Of Phenotypic Plasticity And Associated Trade-Offs In Shell Form, Geoffrey Clayton Trussell

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

I examined variability in the shell form of 25 Littorina obtusata populations from Massachusetts to northern Maine. I chose this scale because the history of one of L. obtusata's principal predators, the crab Carcinus maenas, has changed dramatically in the past 100 years. Before 1900, Carcinus did not occur north of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, but by 1950 it had reached Canadian border. Moreover, in summer water temperatures during average 6-8&\sp\circ&C colder at northern locations. Shell thickness and mass increased and body mass decreased with increasing latitude. to test whether these patterns reflect plasticity in response to predators, snails from two …

Hibernation And Body Weight In Dormice, Glis Glis Orientalis(Nehring, 1903) (Rodentia: Gliridae), Maintained Underuncontrolled Conditions, Ercüment Çolak, Nuri Yi̇ği̇t, Mustafa Sözen, Şakir Özkurt Jan 1998

Hibernation And Body Weight In Dormice, Glis Glis Orientalis(Nehring, 1903) (Rodentia: Gliridae), Maintained Underuncontrolled Conditions, Ercüment Çolak, Nuri Yi̇ği̇t, Mustafa Sözen, Şakir Özkurt

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Hibernation pattern and changes in the body weight of juvenile and adult dormice, Glis glis orientalis, kept in uncontrolled conditions were investigated. It was determined that G.g.orientalis entered hibernation on October 28 when its body weight was 180 g and the ambient temperature was below 18 ºC, which seems to be the critical temperature for entering hibernation. Although body weight has an important role in entering hibernation at the beginning of the hibernation season, dormice hibernated as the hibernation season progressed regardless of their body weight. Adult dormice arose from hibernation during the period of May 13 to June 6. …
