Lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) is a cool-season food legume cultivated around the globe. This pulse crop boasts a rich nutrient profile including high concentrations of prebiotic carbohydrates, protein, essential amino acids, and micronutrients, such as folate, iron, zinc, and selenium. Prebiotic carbohydrates promote a healthy gut microbiome, which, in turn, is associated with reduced risk of numerous pathologies including obesity/overweight, type II diabetes, irritable bowel disease, and colon cancer. This study was carried out to investigate the carry-over effect of a preceding crop on the productivity of the following crop in various rotations in newly reclaimed lands in Egypt. The productivity of peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.), soyabean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.), maize (Zea mays L.) and pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.) in summer season were much higher following berseem (Trifolium alexandrinum L.) or lentil (Lens culinaris Medic) than after wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) or barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) in both years of the study. Resistance gene analogs (RGAs), peroxidases (POXs), and WRKY transcription factors are gene families related to stress-response pathways that regulate enhancement of stress tolerance in crop plants. Producers are interested in growing cover crops and reducing fallow. Growing a crop during the fallow period would increase profitability if crop benefits exceeded expenses. Benefits of growing a cover crop were shown in high rainfall areas, but limited informa­tion is available on growing cover crops in place of fallow in the semiarid Great Plains. A study was done from 2007–2016 that evaluated cover crops, annual forages, and short season grain crops grown in place of fallow. In the first experiment (2007-2012) the rotation was no-till wheat-fallow, and in the second experiment (2012-2016) the rotation was no-till wheat-grain sorghum-fallow. This …

Improved nitrogen use efficiency would be beneficial to agroecosystem sustainability in the northern Great Plains of the USA. The most common rotation in the northern Great Plains is fallow–spring wheat. Tillage during fallow periods controls weeds, which otherwise would use substantial amounts of water and available nitrogen, decreasing the efficiency of fallow. Chemical fallow and zero tillage systems improve soil water conservation, and may improve nitrogen availability to subsequent crops. We conducted a field trial from 1998 through 2003 comparing nitrogen uptake and nitrogen use efficiency of crops in nine rotations under two tillage systems, conventional and no-till. Susceptibility Of Different Lentil ( Lens Culinaris Medik.) Cultivars Toagrobacterium Tumefaciens (Smith & Townsend) Conn, Aziz Karakaya, Sebahattin Özcan

Agrobacterium tumefaciens (Smith& Townsend) Conn is commonly used in gene transfer to plants. The effectiveness of bacterial strains and suitable plant genotypes facilitate this process. In this study, 8 lentil cultivars grown in Turkey were assessed for their susceptibility to two wild-type A. tumefaciens strains, A281 and A136NC. Both strains induced tumors in lentil cultivars, while differing in the ability to form tumors. Although most of the cultivars had some degree of susceptibility to A. tumefaciens infection, cultivars Yesil 21 and Pul 11 had higher frequencies of tumor formation in both strains than the other cultivars tested.
