Furnace ash from coal fired electrical generating steam plants has increased greatly in the last decade with the increased demand for electricity and increased restrictions on air pollution. The large volumes of ash are presenting disposal and containment problems for management of electrical generating plants. Property adjacent to the generating plants has been exposed to fly ash settling from the smoke stacks and ash over flowing from holding structures. The effects of the material on the land and its production are unknown and concern property owners.

The need for use of boron (B) for alfalfa production has been recognized for many years in Kentucky and is presently recommended for general use as an annual topdressing on alfalfa fields. Use of B is also recommended in Kentucky for red clover fields which are to be harvested for seed. In recent years, there has been interest in use of fertilizer B for good corn production in Kentucky. Plant available B is greatly affected by soil pH and decreases with increasing soil pH. Grain Crop Varieties For Western Australia, H M. Fisher

Recommendations for grain crop varieties grown in Western Australia are based on the results of field trials carried out each year by the Department of Agriculture at some 50 sites throughout the agricultural areas.

New varieties are tested directly against existing commercial varieties in large scale field trials for several years. Yield and quality results are analysed and market requirements are studied before recommendations are formulated.

This article gives information on the varieties of a range of crops now recommended for growing in Western Australia.

The Use Of Foliar Applied Zinc Compounds In Correcting Zinc Deficiency In Fruit Crops, Lynn F. Hall

The effectiveness of two chelated zinc compounds in correcting zinc deficiencies was studied. Soil and foliar treatments were made to study possible residual zinc carry-over from one season to the next. Foliar treatments at various rates were applied to raise plant tissue zinc levels above deficiency levels. It was found that none of the treatments studied resulted in any substantial carry-over of zinc to the following year. All of the foliar zinc treatments resulted in an increase in leaf zinc content in all of the varieties of fruit studied. The level of zinc in the treated trees increased in proportion …

Soil moisture conditions can have a large effect on crop responses to nitrogen fertilization. Kentucky's usual climatic pattern of periods of heavy rainfall and relatively warm temperatures during the winter and spring seasons influences expected yield responses of corn to applied nitrogen. If nitrogen fertilizer is applied in late winter or early spring, some of it may be lost before the plants have made sufficient growth to take up appreciable quantities. The amount of loss that might be expected will be influenced by the amount of rainfall, temperature, amount of organic matter and drainage of the soil.

TEST YOUR SOIL AND SUPPLY THE SUGGESTED LIMING AND FERTILIZER MATERIALS.

A soil test is the first step to profitable small grain production. A pH of 6.0 to 6.5 is best, and nitrogen should be applied both in the fall and spring. If your small grains are part of a double cropping system the P and K requirements for both crops should be applied in the fall.

Plants show considerable variation in their resistance to soil alkali. Some varieties of native vegetation grow only where the salt content of the soil is high. Most of the cultivated plants, on the other hand, are injured very decidedly by the presence of large quantities of soluble salts. To this rule there are a few exceptions such as the date palm.

Probably no agricultural practice varies more than the depth to which seeds are sown. Some farmers pay very little attention to depth, but simply allow the seed to be placed where the drill happens to penetrate. The percentage germination of the seed as well as the vigor of the young plants is without doubt influenced by the depth of sowing, and certainly these factors are very important in determining the yield of crops.

In earlier bulletins it has been shown that when the quantity of irrigation water applied to crops is varied, the yields of the total crop as well as of the several plant parts vary quite definitely. The readiness with which plants respond to differences in irrigation is really remarkable and undoubtedly lies at the foundation of the future science of irrigation.

Variations in the quantities of irrigation water not only affect the total yield of dry matter, but also the composition of the plant itself. This fact was brought out many years ago in the investigations of this Station.
