Procedures For The Administration And Assessment Of Clearing And Protection Of Native Vegetation In Western Australia, Alexander Mcrae Holm
Procedures For The Administration And Assessment Of Clearing And Protection Of Native Vegetation In Western Australia, Alexander Mcrae Holm
Soil conservation survey collection
It is Department of Agriculture policy that regulation is only used when all other approaches to address land degradation have failed. Our thrust is to encourage land holders to move towards using land within its capabilities as they continue to adopt sustainable farming systems. Underlying this approach is a self regulatory philosophy with land conservation district committees playing an important management and coordination role. Nevertheless the community expects that land degradation will be controlled and legislation is available to underpin or complement the good intentions of most land holders. The Soil and Land Conservation Act is the legislation used to …

Effects Of Soybean Cultivars And Planting Dates On Biomass Production, Aslam Tawhid
Effects Of Soybean Cultivars And Planting Dates On Biomass Production, Aslam Tawhid
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] is a valuable source of edible food and organic nitrogen. Soybean cultivar development and cultural practices have been directed toward seed production rather than forage or green manure production. Recent environmental concerns have resulted in renewed interest in the use of organic matter in agriculture. The objective of the present investigation was to determine the effects of cultivar maturity differences and planting dates on biomass production of soybean. The research was conducted on the Western Kentucky University Farm in 1993. The experimental design was a split-split-plot with four replications. The three planting dates (June 2, …

Oats As A Companion Crop For Alfalfa: Establishment Methods, Shannon Hurley
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Companion crops are commomly seeded with alfalfa in the spring as an establishment method. The objectives of this research were to evaluate the performance of seedling Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) in terms of yield when grown with spring oats (Avena sativa) as a companion crop and to evaluate the amount of weed control in the alfalfa companion crop seeding, under various management practices. Six establishment treatments were imposed: (1) solo-seeded alfalfa raised according to standard procedures recommended for Kentucky, (2) solo-seeded alfalfa with a herbicide treatment, (3) alfalfa seeded with an oat companion crop and treated with a herbicide, (4) …

Irrigation And Culm Contribution To Yield And Yield Components Of Winter Wheat, Gregory S. Mcmaster, Wallace Wilhelm, Patricia N. S. Bartling
Irrigation And Culm Contribution To Yield And Yield Components Of Winter Wheat, Gregory S. Mcmaster, Wallace Wilhelm, Patricia N. S. Bartling
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Water is generally the limiting factor in U.S. Great Plains wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production. With increasing demands for limited water, improving the efficacy of irrigation is critical. One technique is to irrigate during responsive stages of crop development, but few studies have examined this approach. This 2-yr study on a Nunn clay loam soil (fine, montmorillonitic, mesic Aridic Argiustoll) was designed to examine the effects of irrigation, based on stage of crop development, on winter wheat yield, yield components (on a plant basis), and specific culm responses. In the first year, the treatments were control (dryland), and irrigation …

Age-Related Resistance To 987p Fimbria-Mediated Colonization Correlates With Specific Glycolipid Receptors In Intestinal Mucus In Swine, Evelyn A. Dean-Nystrom, James E. Samuel
Age-Related Resistance To 987p Fimbria-Mediated Colonization Correlates With Specific Glycolipid Receptors In Intestinal Mucus In Swine, Evelyn A. Dean-Nystrom, James E. Samuel
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Strains of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli that produce 987P fimbriae (987P+ strains) colonize the small intestines and cause diarrhea in neonatal (<6-day-old) pigs but not in weaned pigs. However, 987P+ E. coli strains adhere in vitro to intestinal epithelial cells from pigs of both ages. Two intestinal components, designated 987R and 987M, bind 987P fimbriae (987P) on Western blots (immunoblots). We examined brush borders (BB) and intestinal washes (IW) from pigs to determine if they contain glycolipids which bind 987P. Total glycolipid extracts from BB and IW of 4-week-old pigs were separated on thin-layer chromatograms and overlaid with purified 987P. Bound 987P were detected with 987P-specific antiserum. …6-day-old)>
Imbibition Response Of Winter Wheat To Water-Filled Pore Space, Guillermo A. Studdert, Wallace Wilhelm, James F. Power
Imbibition Response Of Winter Wheat To Water-Filled Pore Space, Guillermo A. Studdert, Wallace Wilhelm, James F. Power
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Reduced temperature and increased bulk density associated with conservation tillage systems cause lower seed germination, seedling emergence, and early growth rates resulting in reduced plant stands. Prediction of the influence of soil condition on seed imbibition through simple soil measurements would help make agronomic decisions such as planting date and/or density. Our objectives were to evaluate the influence of soil water-filled pore space on winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seed imbibition and to assess the possibility of describing the relationship through simple mathematical models. We measured the rate of water uptake by heat-killed wheat seeds at three levels of …

The Identification, Distribution, Impacts, Biology And Management Of Noxious Rangeland Weeds, Roger L. Sheley
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
This document provides a discussion of the biology and management of exotic rangeland weeds which are a threat to native ecosystems of the western United States. Chapter 1 describes a generalized approach for managing noxious weed infested rangeland, while Chapter 2 focuses on preventing noxious weed invasion. In some cases, noxious weeds readily invade riparian areas, and because of the sensitive nature of these ecosystems Chapter 3 is devoted to riparian weed management. The following 13 chapters describe the identification, origin, history, distribution, potential invasion, impacts, biology and ecology, and management of specific noxious rangeland weeds.

The Effect Of Nitrogen Fertilization On The Phenology Of Roots In A Barrier Island Sand Dune Community, Everett P. Weber
The Effect Of Nitrogen Fertilization On The Phenology Of Roots In A Barrier Island Sand Dune Community, Everett P. Weber
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Little work has been done on the phenology of root growth and senescence largely due to methodological difficulties. The application of minirhizotron technology has enabled the tracking of individual roots through an entire growing season. As a result, direct measures of turnover, root growth, and an analysis of cohorts were made. Small plots on a 36 year old dune on Hog Island, a barrier island in the Virginia Coast Reserve Long Term Ecological Research Site, were fertilized with nitrogen. Minirhizotron tubes were installed in each fertilized and control plot. Each tube was sampled monthly for nine months, March through October …
On-Farm Testing Of Early Maturing Soybeans, Larry J. Grabau, Colleen C. Steele, N. Gift
On-Farm Testing Of Early Maturing Soybeans, Larry J. Grabau, Colleen C. Steele, N. Gift
Agronomy Notes
Maturity Group (MG) II soybean varieties have performed well in University of Kentucky tests over the past several years. Six tests from 1986 to 1989 showed MG II varieities to outyield MG I, III, or IV varieties. During those relatively dry years, MG II may have been able to better utilize limited soil moisture than did later maturing varieties. Across the years 1990 to 1993, four planting date tests showed continued strong performance by MG II' varieties, although MG III and IV varieties had slightly higher yield averages during those wetter years. In summary, over the last eight years of …
An Evaluation Of Twelve Maturity Group Ii Soybean Varieties At Lexington, Kentucky, Larry J. Grabau, Colleen C. Steele
An Evaluation Of Twelve Maturity Group Ii Soybean Varieties At Lexington, Kentucky, Larry J. Grabau, Colleen C. Steele
Agronomy Notes
In 1993, an on-farm study funded. by the Kentucky Soybean Promotion Board showed that the best Maturity Group (MG) II variety tested was quite competitive with the best available MG IV variety. However, other MG II varieties did not fare as well, indicating that careful variety selection will be essential for on-farm success with this MG II cropping system. MG II varieties used in past University of Kentucky tests have been chosen based on their performance in university variety trials where they are normally grown, for example, in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. Such tests include relatively large numbers of …
Aboveground Biomass And Net Primary Production Along A Virginia Barrier Island Dune Chronosequence, John Joseph Dilustro
Aboveground Biomass And Net Primary Production Along A Virginia Barrier Island Dune Chronosequence, John Joseph Dilustro
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Aboveground biomass was examined along a chronosequence of dune communities on Hog Island, a Virginia Coast Reserve LTER site. The dominant species were Ammophila breviligulata and Spartina patens. Aboveground biomass was harvested monthly from ten quadrats on dunes 6, 24, 36, and 120 years old. Sampling was conducted from April to November 1993. Biomass values were greater for younger dunes. Total aboveground biomass decreased with increasing site age and ranged from 152 g m-2 on the 120 year old dune to 205 g m-2 on the 6 year old dune in October 1993. Spartina patens biomass was …
