New Block Badgingarra Rs Late Time Of Seeding., J. W. Bowden, R. J. Lunt

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Trial 89BA33,

Location: Badgingarra

Based on a 1.5 t/ha potential yield, the strategic treatment was planned to be 120 kg urea/ha 4WAS. However, the crop was poorly established and so NH4NO3 was used in the hope of getting better tillering than would be possible with the slower release urea source. Gambling on equal dollars to urea for 2/3 N, but believe that twice as effective.

DAP was used to place nitrogen with the seed in case there was no rain of significance after seeding. This nitrogen (only 5 kg/ha) was probably lost with the rains of 20-28/7/89 (50 mm). Urea …

Rhizoctonia Control In Potatoes And Potato Resistance To Powdery Scab., R M. Floyd

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Trials : 88BY26, 88PE34, 88MD35

Control of Rhizoctonia solani infection of potato stems and daughter tubers was demonstrated by preplanting applications of tolclofos-methyl (RIZOLEX TM) to either cut or round seed tubers. Yield of tubers from cut seed treated with Rizolex was increased over that of cut seed cured before planting bu not when seed was cut and planted the same day. Crops grown from round seed treated with Rizolex yielded higher than from untreated round seed.

Surface sterilization of seed tubers with Sodium hypochlorite was effective in reducing stem damage but not in reducing daughter tuber sclerotes. This indicates …

Increased Returns From Agronomic Inputs In Early Sown Cereal Crops, W K. Anderson Jan 1989

Increased Returns From Agronomic Inputs In Early Sown Cereal Crops, W K. Anderson

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

When crop variety and soeing dae are matched so that flowering occurs in the 'window' for a particular site, grain yields are increased and yield response to inputs such as nitrogen fertilizer and seeding rate is magnified.

This response occurs because the srop's potential for setting and filling grains is much improved by sowing at the optimum time. However varieties differ in their yield potential because they have different lenghts of growing season, which probably affects grain numbers, and because they have different inherent grain sizes. These differences affect the way varieties react to sowing date. Figure 1 shows how …

Early Sowing : One Key To Improved Yields Of Cereal Crops, M W. Perry, Wal Anderson, Rob Delane Jan 1989

Early Sowing : One Key To Improved Yields Of Cereal Crops, M W. Perry, Wal Anderson, Rob Delane

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Early sowing of cereal crops is one of the most important management practices through which Western Australian cereal growers can increase yields.

Researchers have long known that in theory early sowing should mean improved growth and water use efficiency - which both contribuite to increased yields. Application of this knowledge has had to await new tillage and herbicide technology, but recent research in the northan and central wheatbelt has now demonstrated the advantages of early sowing in practice. And more exciting yet, there is evidence that yield responses to weed control and applied fertilizers may also be greater in early …

Trees In The Peel-Harvey Catchment, C S. Peek, Richard Silberstein Jan 1989

Trees In The Peel-Harvey Catchment, C S. Peek, Richard Silberstein

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The peel-Harvey catchment has been the focus for an intensive research and extension programme to reduce phosphorous run-off flowing into the Peel Inlet and Harvey Estuary, while maintaining agricultural productivity.

One of the proposed management strategies is to plant large areas of trees on the catchment's leaching sands. Farmers would be encouraged to take this option if growing trees was at least equal, in financial return, to the present agricultural land uses.

Preliminary data indicate that growing Eucalyptus globulas (Tasmanian bluegum) for woodchipping may be at least as profitable as agriculture. Tree plantations also have the added potential to reduce …

Pasture Species Evaluation On Acid Wodjil Soil - Machine Sown Plots., Bradley Nutt Jan 1989

Pasture Species Evaluation On Acid Wodjil Soil - Machine Sown Plots., Bradley Nutt

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Trial 89TS38

Location: East Latham

The very low seed yields are a reflection of the dry winter conditions experienced in 1989. The Rose (T. hirtum) and Cupped (T. cherli) clovers appear to be a more promising option for this difficult soil type compared to other species. Paros yellow serradella performed well considering the trial site is located in a very dry area. The burr medics would not be an option on these acidic soil types because of nodulation failure; which should become evident in the regenerating swards.

Trial 86KA64 - ironstone hardsetting clay pH 8.0

Current recommendations for pasture species in the medium rainfall zone has not included species mixtures for paddocks with varying soil types. These trials (three in total) are designed to test the hypothesis that legume species mixtures are more productive and persistent in the long term than monocultures, across three soil types and three different cropping/pasture rotations (continuous pasture, 1 year pasture : 1 year crop rotation, 2 years pasture : 1 year crop rotation).

Preliminary Evaluation Of A Dodder Anthracnose Fungus From China As A Mycoherbicide For Dodder Control In The Us, D. K. Cartwright, George E. Templeton

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Dodder (Cuscuta spp.) is a noxious, parasitic, annual weed throughout most of the United States. A fungus used to control it in China was imported under permit for studies with U.S. dodder species in containment. The fungus, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, sporulated on liquid and solid media at room temperature. Conidia from 7-12 day old cultures were diluted to 3.5 to 7 X 16⁶ spores ml^-1 for host range inoculations. Germination on water agar at 24 hrs was higher at 28 than 30 or 24 C. Inoculated plants were exposed to dew periods of 12-1 4 hrs at 24 or 28 C, …

Prospects For Leucaena On The Ord, D Pratchett, Tim Triglone Jan 1989

Prospects For Leucaena On The Ord, D Pratchett, Tim Triglone

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

For the past few years, the Department of Agriculture has been fattening cattle on the forage shrub leucaena which is grown under irrigation with pangola grass. About 400ha of leucaena is under commercial production in the Kimberley.

Cattle grazing leucaena show promising growth rates but other problems need to be overcome before its use is more widely adopted. Leucaena establishes slowly. It is also costly to transport fattened cattle to southern abbatoirs.

Breeding Field Peas In Western Australia, T N. Khan Jan 1989

Breeding Field Peas In Western Australia, T N. Khan

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Field peas have grown dramatically in popularity in western Australia in the past five years, with the planted area increasing from a mere few hundred hectares to about 70,000 ha in 1988. This growth may continue, as more than 700,000 ha of agricultural land is potentially suitable for growing field peas.

However, any such growth of the pea industry will require new cultivars with improved yield, adaptation and quality characteristics to meet local and export demands. The Department of agriculture therefore decided to start a selection and breeding programme to support the pea industry.
