Management Of Four Alfalfa Varieties To Control Damage From Potato Leafhoppers, W. R. Kehr, R. L. Ogden, J. D. Kindler
Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station
The main purpose of this study was to obtain information on forage yield and quality of four alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) varieties that differed in level of resistance to potato leafhopper (Empoasca fabae Harris) yellowing, when cut at three stages of growth in the second and third cuttings in field plots, with and without insecticide application. The stages of growth were bud, 1/10, and full bloom. Other purposes included study of the same varieties in field cages manually infested at 20, 40, and 60 adult leafhoppers/square yard, and in supplemental cuttings of field plots under high natural infestation …

Contents Of Chlorophylls A And B In Chlorophyll-Deficient Mutants Of Sweetclover, James E. Specht, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Leaf extracts from twelve chlorophyll-deficient mutants of sweetclover (Melilotus alba Desr.) were compared spectrophotometrically and chromatographically with extracts from normal plants to determine contents of chlorophylls a and b Total chlorophyll contents in cotyledons and leaves of all mutants were significantly lower than those in corresponding tissues of normal plants. Chlorophyll contents were generally higher in later emerging leaves of both normal and mutant plants. Chlorophyll alb ratios in first trifoliolate leaves were similar to normal in mutants ch7 and ch8, higher in mutants ch8, ch9, ch10, and ch11 …
Tobacco Farming: The Persistence Of Tradition, Eugene Umberger Jr.
Tobacco Farming: The Persistence Of Tradition, Eugene Umberger Jr.
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The culture of tobacco has been associated with the history of Kentucky almost from the beginning and remains to this day a vital force in the state’s economy. In this age of scientific and technological advances – of increasing automation – we find that in tobacco farming, hand labor still figures prominently in the production of a major staple crop. This has resulted in the retention of traditional method, technology and terminology, long since lost in the culture of other crops which lent themselves more easily to mechanization.
The study is divided into three parts. Chapter I deals briefly with …

Reevaluation Of Common Wheats From The Usda World Wheat Collection For Protein And Lysine Content, K. P. Vogel, V. A. Johnson, P. J. Mattern
Reevaluation Of Common Wheats From The Usda World Wheat Collection For Protein And Lysine Content, K. P. Vogel, V. A. Johnson, P. J. Mattern
Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station
The protein and lysine content of wheat can be altered by breeding only if genetic variability exists for these traits. Lysine is a nutritionally limiting amino acid in wheat protein. Protein and lysine analyses of the common wheats of the USDA World Wheat Collection indicated that variability does exist for these traits. Some of the variability for protein and lysine among wheats of the World Collection may not be genetic in origin, because all the 12,000 wheats analyzed were not grown in the same environment. The purpose of this study was to reevaluate selected lines from the World Wheat Collection …

Systematics Of Neotropical Hirstionyssus Mites With Special Emphasis With Special Emphasis On Venezuela (Acarina: Mesostigmata), C. Selby Herrin, Conrad E. Yunker
Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series
This paper presents the results of a systematic study of mites of the genus Hirstionyssus Fonseca collected from mammals, primarily in Venezuela, but including one collection each from Colombia, Nicaragua, and British Honduras. Previously described species from Panamá and Brazil are reviewed and new distributional records are listed. The known Neotropical fauna of Hirstionyssus mites includes 15 species, 7 of which are described here as new: H. proctolatus n. sp.; H. brachysternum n. sp.; H. dorsolatus n. sp.; H. rhipidomys n. sp.; H, venezuelensis n. sp.; H. brevicalcar n. sp.; and H. parvisoma n. sp. The previously unknown male and …

Spinturnicid Mites Of Venezuela (Acarina: Spinturnicidae), C. Selby Herrin, Vernon J. Tipton
Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series
The results of an extensive survey of spinturnicid mites of bats from Venezuela are presented in this paper. Approximately 30,000 bats were collected from a wide variety of life zones and localities. A representative sample was searched for ectoparasites. There are 3 genera of the family Spinturnicidae in Venezuela: Cameronieta, Periglischrus, and Spinturnix. Three previously described species of Cameronieta were found in the Venezuelan collection. Of the 7 species of Spinturnix previously described from the New World, 4 are reported from Venezuela. The genus Periglischrus constitutes by far the most significant segment of the Venezuelan collection. It is represented by …

Distribution And Abundance Of The Black-Billed Magpie (Pica Pica) In North America, Carl E. Bock, Larry W. Lepthien
Distribution And Abundance Of The Black-Billed Magpie (Pica Pica) In North America, Carl E. Bock, Larry W. Lepthien
Great Basin Naturalist
Analysis of Audubon Society Christmas bird count data and certain environmental variables shows the degree to which the Black-billed Magpie is a bird of cool arid regions in North America. The abundance and distribution of this species appear to be limited by two major climatic barriers: increasing summer temperatures in the Southwest and increasing summer humidity and precipitation on the central plains.
