Forest Communities Of The Great Valley Of East Tennessee And Their Relationship To Soil And Topographic Properties, William Haywood Martin
Forest Communities Of The Great Valley Of East Tennessee And Their Relationship To Soil And Topographic Properties, William Haywood Martin
Doctoral Dissertations
The complex physiographic and climatic history of the Great Valley of East Tennessee has resulted in development of diverse alternating ridge and valley land forms and soils which provide equally diverse forest habitats.
The objectives of this study were (1) to quantify certain topographic features, (2) to analyze statistical relationships of vegetation and tree taxa to selected soil properties and topographic features, (3) to assess magnitude and predictability of these relationships, (4) to document taxonomic diversity of tree taxa, (5) to document and delimit contemporary forest communities and describe interactions with soil-site properties, and (6) to consider relationships of these …

Effect Of Fertilization And Management On The Production Of Bromegrass In Northeast Nebraska, G. W. Rehm, W. J. Moline, E. J. Schwartz, R. S. Moomaw
Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station
Several experiments were conducted in northeast Nebraska to determine the effect of fertility and management practices on the production of smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis Leyss). The effectiveness of the various fertilizer treatments was measured in units of dry matter produced per acre as well as beef produced per acre. Results of these studies showed that the production of bromegrass pastures in Nebraska could be markedly improved through proper fertilization.

Penstemon In Your Garden, R. D. Uhlinger, G. Viehmeyer
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
A new race of hardy perennials is beginning to appear in American gardens. These are the penstemons, a genus of plants closely related to the familiar snapdragon, which may become important ornamentals as they be come better known to gardeners. The purpose of this bulletin is to show the possibility of the genus as an ornamental and to suggest species and species hybrids of possible value to Great Plains gardeners; to provide information about propagation and culture; and to encourage gardeners to engage in penstemon breeding as an avocation.

Influence Of Iron Supply On Peroxidase Activity And Peroxidase Isozymes In Corn (Zea Mays), R. L. Ulmer, Francis A. Haskins, W. R. Akeson
Influence Of Iron Supply On Peroxidase Activity And Peroxidase Isozymes In Corn (Zea Mays), R. L. Ulmer, Francis A. Haskins, W. R. Akeson
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Plants of Oh43 X Wf9 corn (Zea mays L.), grown in a sand culture system, were watered daily with nutrient solution containing 0.025, 1.25, or 2.5 ppm Fe. Plants also were grown in a soil-sand mixture. Leaf extracts were assayed quantitatively for peroxidase activity, and samples of the extracts were subjected to gel electrophoresis. A positive relationship was observed between Fe supply and proxidase activity. Numerous peroxidase isozymes were detected by gel electrophoresis. As judged by intensity of the bands, all isozymes appeared to be infIuenced by Fe supply.
