The major purpose of this study was to make an analysis of marketing fluid milk in sparsely populated areas of the West. Costs of processing and delivering milk in small and medium sized processing plants were ascertained. In addition prices and quality of milk available to consumers in sparsely populated and urban areas were compared.

Halogeton (Halogeton glomeratus) although introduced into Utah only 20 years ago, has spread widely on the west desert and into extensive areas on the east desert. This plant has become the most feared poisonous plant in the state because people have been lead to believe that it would limit livestock production to areas kept free of the weed.

The most important prerequisite of linings for controlling seepage losses from irrigation canals is their watertightness. In addition to being watertight, a lining must be relatively durable if it is to be economical. Rigid materials provide satisfactory linings for canals with well-drained and stable subgrades. Under other conditions, where expansive soils are encountered and ground water is a problem, a rigid lining such as concrete is not durable. Considering the many factors that govern the utility and durability of linings, the ideal lining would consist of a material with some flexibility, a material resistant to erosion and mechanical damage, and …

In 1605 Oliver de Serres, French agronomist, observed that beets contained sugar-and in 1750 Andrew Marggraf, a German physicist, obtained sugar crystals from beets. It was more than 100 years from Marggraf's discovery until the first successful beet sugar factory was developed in the United States at Alvarado, California, in 1870. Since that time beet sugar has become increasingly more important in our national economy. At present continental United States produces a third of her sugar requirements, 70 to 80 percent of which is from sugar beets. The vegetation of great areas of Mixed Prairie has been destroyed by plowing. But even larger ones, still intact, have degenerated far from a climax condition. The almost universal cause for such deterioration, aside from drought, is grazing. The objective of this study has been to ascertain the changes in vegetation that have resulted from 60-70 years of different intensities of grazing by cattle and to express them quantitatively. Rehabilitation of deteriorated and abused range lands is being accomplished with greater success each year by the aid of better methods of seeding which include seedbed preparation, intensities of seeding, implements for planting and improved methods of eliminating competition. Much more information is needed, however, in order to recommend suitable methods and species for seeding various vegetation types and sones with reasonable reliability. The isothermal movement of liquid water in saturated soil has been intensively studied, and a sound theoretical basis has been developed. Considerably less is known about the flow of water in unsaturated soils, but a general theory based on Darcy's law of flow is beginning to develop. A good theoretical basis exists for the vapor diffusion under isothermal conditions. Inconsistent data and theories are found in the literature concerning the movement of water in both the vapor and liquid phases, under the influence of thermal fields.

During recent years high energy turkey diets containing com as the sole source of ground grain have been fed extensively. Corn has been used as the grain part of the mash because of its high energy, low fiber qualities, and because its deficiencies in amino acids, vitamins, and minerals have been determined by research. Supplements to overcome these deficiencies have been added to high energy corn diets. Excellent results have been obtained when adequate supplementation of vitamins, amino acids, and minerals were made.

The importance of the magnitude of the surface areas to such properties as base exchange, water-holding capacity, absorption of gases, and the plasticity of soils has been demonstrated. Inheritance of many characters in barley has been studied, and two or more genes have been located in each of the seven pairs of chromosomes. Studies of the mode of inheritance of these characters will aid plant breeders materially in working with plants of diverse genetic make-up.
