Contents Of Chlorophylls A And B In Chlorophyll-Deficient Mutants Of Sweetclover, James E. Specht, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Leaf extracts from twelve chlorophyll-deficient mutants of sweetclover (Melilotus alba Desr.) were compared spectrophotometrically and chromatographically with extracts from normal plants to determine contents of chlorophylls a and b Total chlorophyll contents in cotyledons and leaves of all mutants were significantly lower than those in corresponding tissues of normal plants. Chlorophyll contents were generally higher in later emerging leaves of both normal and mutant plants. Chlorophyll alb ratios in first trifoliolate leaves were similar to normal in mutants ch7 and ch8, higher in mutants ch8, ch9, ch10, and ch11 …

Tobacco Farming: The Persistence Of Tradition, Eugene Umberger Jr. Dec 1975

Tobacco Farming: The Persistence Of Tradition, Eugene Umberger Jr.

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The culture of tobacco has been associated with the history of Kentucky almost from the beginning and remains to this day a vital force in the state’s economy. In this age of scientific and technological advances – of increasing automation – we find that in tobacco farming, hand labor still figures prominently in the production of a major staple crop. This has resulted in the retention of traditional method, technology and terminology, long since lost in the culture of other crops which lent themselves more easily to mechanization.

The study is divided into three parts. Chapter I deals briefly with …

Reevaluation Of Common Wheats From The Usda World Wheat Collection For Protein And Lysine Content, K. P. Vogel, V. A. Johnson, P. J. Mattern Nov 1975

Reevaluation Of Common Wheats From The Usda World Wheat Collection For Protein And Lysine Content, K. P. Vogel, V. A. Johnson, P. J. Mattern

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

The protein and lysine content of wheat can be altered by breeding only if genetic variability exists for these traits. Lysine is a nutritionally limiting amino acid in wheat protein. Protein and lysine analyses of the common wheats of the USDA World Wheat Collection indicated that variability does exist for these traits. Some of the variability for protein and lysine among wheats of the World Collection may not be genetic in origin, because all the 12,000 wheats analyzed were not grown in the same environment. The purpose of this study was to reevaluate selected lines from the World Wheat Collection …

Seedling Growth Of Three Switchgrass Strains, L. J. Perry Jr., Lowell E. Moser Sep 1975

Seedling Growth Of Three Switchgrass Strains, L. J. Perry Jr., Lowell E. Moser

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Seedlings of Pathfinder, Nebr. 28, and experimental ey switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) strains were grown in a growth chamber and harvested 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, and 10 weeks following emergence for detection of seedling growth differences among strains. Leaf areas and dry weights of leaf blade and stem axis (stem and leaf sheath) generally increased significantly with each harvest from 4 to 10 weeks. Stem axis and leaf blade dry weights were significantly greater with Pathfinder and ey, respectively, than with Nebr. 28. Final leaf area was significantly greater with ey than with the other strains. Thus, …

Pollution Of Surface Irrigation Waters By Plant Pathogenic Organisms, James R. Steadman, C. R. Maier, H. F. Schwartz, E. D. Kerr Aug 1975

Pollution Of Surface Irrigation Waters By Plant Pathogenic Organisms, James R. Steadman, C. R. Maier, H. F. Schwartz, E. D. Kerr

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Systematic sampling of waterways and irrigation runoff from agricultural lands in the North Platte Project of Nebraska in July and August of 1972–1974 demonstrated that phytopathogenic organisms were disseminated. The organisms monitored included the bean common blight bacterium Xanthomonas phaseoli, the bean white mold fungus Whetzelinia sclerotiorum and various nematodes. Although many types of nematodes often were recovered from irrigation water, Heterodera sp. cysts which cause significant disease problems in the valley were found infrequently. Patterns of movement of the bacterial and fungal organisms were correlated with previous or current season infection of bean plants. The short-term survival of X. …

Leaf Freckles And Wilt Of Corn Incited By Corynebacterium Nebraskense Schuster, Hoff, Mandel, Lazar, 1972, M. L. Schuster

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

The new bacterial disease Leaf Freckles and Wilt (LFW) of corn (Zea mays L.) was first observed in 1969 on two farms in southcentral Nebraska. Since then it has spread to other areas in the state. LFW is a serious disease on farms in six Nebraska counties (Clay, Custer, Dawson, Furnas, Hall and Phelps) and has been found in isolated cases in at least 28 other counties. In 1971 LFW was found in a seedcorn field in western Iowa, in 1973 in two Kansas counties, and in 1974 in South Dakota and Colorado. Because of its explosive nature, several …

Structure & Composition Of A Climax Forest System In Boone County, Kentucky, Michael Held May 1975

Structure & Composition Of A Climax Forest System In Boone County, Kentucky, Michael Held

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The structure and composition of a 52 hectare mature mesic hardwood forest in Boone County, Kentucky was studied during 1973-74. Acer saccharum was the dominant tree species of the entire forest, with Fraxinus americana as the subdominant. In the understory vegetation, Acer and Fraxinus were among the dominant genera, thus this forest system can be described as being at the climax stage of development. A previously cleared area in the forest was also analyzed. It was found that the dominant tree species of the canopy were also dominant in the genera of the understory in the disturbed area, indicating a …

Resistance Of Red Clover To The Clover Leaf Weevil, H. J. Gorz, G. R. Manglitz, Francis A. Haskins Apr 1975

Resistance Of Red Clover To The Clover Leaf Weevil, H. J. Gorz, G. R. Manglitz, Francis A. Haskins

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Red clover (Trifolium pretense L.) varieties in the third season of growth, that had been exposed to a heavy infestation of larvae of the clover leaf weevil [Hypera punctata (Fabricius)], differed significantly in percentage defoliation, feeding injury score, plant height, and forage production. Based on these four characters, 'Mammoth,' 'Lakeland,' 'Dollard,' and 'LaSalle' were highly resistant to larval feeding; 'Kenland,' 'Common,' and 'Pennscott' were highly susceptible. Long term second-season yield tests including six of these varieties indicated no con• sistent superiority of any of the varieties in the absence of weevil feeding.

Inheritance Of Seed And Seedling Color In Sweetclover, H. J. Gorz, James E. Specht, Francis A. Haskins Apr 1975

Inheritance Of Seed And Seedling Color In Sweetclover, H. J. Gorz, James E. Specht, Francis A. Haskins

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Eight seed colors, conditioned by two independent pairs of genes, were identified in sweetclover (Melilotus alba Desr.). The seed colors resulted from all combinations of two embryo and four seed coat phenotypes. Only four of the seed colors were recoverable in true-breeding form. Conventional genetic tests revealed that Y /y alleles determined the absence or presence, respectively, of green pigmentation in both the embryo and seed coat of fully mature seeds. Absence of green was dominant in both seed parts. The C/c alleles conditioned the presence or absence, respectively, of brownish pigmentation in the seed coat and red pigmentation …

Intermediates In The Biosynthesis Of Double-Stranded Ribonucleic Acids Of Bacteriophage Φ6, D. L. Coplin, James L. Van Etten, James A. Koski, A. K. Vidaver Mar 1975

Intermediates In The Biosynthesis Of Double-Stranded Ribonucleic Acids Of Bacteriophage Φ6, D. L. Coplin, James L. Van Etten, James A. Koski, A. K. Vidaver

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Pseudomonas phaseolicola infected with bacteriophage φ6 synthesized all three viral double-stranded RNA segments, three single-stranded RNAs, and three replicative intermediate-like RNAs in the presence of rifampin. The single-stranded RNA intermediates sedimented and electrophoresed along with melted viral double-stranded RNA, annealed with melted viral double-stranded RNA, and were transient in nature. The relative amounts of the single-stranded RNA intermediates varied during the infection cycle and were altered in the presence of chloramphenicol. The replicative intermediate-like RNAs sedimented faster than double-stranded RNA, failed to enter 2.5% polyacrylamide gels, eluted with double-stranded RNA from a CF-11 cellulose column, were precipitated with single-stranded RNA …

Influence Of Time Of Application Of Nitrogen Fertilizer On Corn Yields, Harold F. Miller, Kenneth Wells, Morris J. Bitzer, G. W. Thomas, R. E. Phillips Mar 1975

Influence Of Time Of Application Of Nitrogen Fertilizer On Corn Yields, Harold F. Miller, Kenneth Wells, Morris J. Bitzer, G. W. Thomas, R. E. Phillips

Agronomy Notes

Soil moisture conditions can have a large effect on crop responses to nitrogen fertilization. Kentucky's usual climatic pattern of periods of heavy rainfall and relatively warm temperatures during the winter and spring seasons influences expected yield responses of corn to applied nitrogen. If nitrogen fertilizer is applied in late winter or early spring, some of it may be lost before the plants have made sufficient growth to take up appreciable quantities. The amount of loss that might be expected will be influenced by the amount of rainfall, temperature, amount of organic matter and drainage of the soil.

1974 Seed Yield Of Early Maturing Crossbreds Under Wheatbelt Conditions, C. M. Francis Feb 1975

1974 Seed Yield Of Early Maturing Crossbreds Under Wheatbelt Conditions, C. M. Francis

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Small plot trials sited at Merredin, Bencubbin and Bungil again demonstrated the 'bred' varieties to be at least the equal of Geraldton or Northam A under wheatbelt conditions. Growing season conditions at Bencubbin were the best for pasture in recent years. Merredin and Bungil also received above average rainfall but encountered dry conditions in September. Predictably the coarse siliceous nature of the Wodgil soil at Bungil in conjunction with the dry period produced very low seed yields. Crossbred 175.1.3 the leading crossbred at Merredin in 1973, was again significantly better than Geraldton or Northam A at Merredin and Bungil (Table …

Summary Of Trial Results - 1974, N R. Mckeown

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Observations and measurements were made on 10 grazing trials and 11 small-plot legume species trials in 1974. Three of the grazing trials were under crop, two of them concluding low oestrogen species trials which had been grazed since 1969, and one of them, 68M023, West Moora, as an interval between pasture phases. The small-plot trials dated from 1970 or later and on most of them half of each plot could be grazed by sheep and half was protected. These trials have continued to supply useful information on the suitabiliy of cultivars to soil and climate and will be the subject …

Ipomoea Carnea Jacq. (Convolvulaceae) In Costa Rica, Kathleen H. Keeler Jan 1975

Ipomoea Carnea Jacq. (Convolvulaceae) In Costa Rica, Kathleen H. Keeler

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

This is the first report of Ipomoea carnea (Convolvulaceae) from lowland Costa Rica. These populations are unusual for the species in flower color, flowering season and pollinator. Other aspects of the biology of the species in Guanacaste, especially pollination, flower robbing and extrafloral nectary visitors, are discussed.
