A Morphological Investigation Of Colchicum L. (Liliaceae) Species In The Mediterranean Region In Turkey, Olcay Di̇nç Düşen, Hüseyi̇n Sümbül

Turkish Journal of Botany

The morphological features of Colchicum L. species were studied based on samples collected from the Mediterranean region in Turkey between 2000 and 2004. Typifications, synonym lists, descriptions, ecology, and phytogeography are provided for all Colchicum species and relationships to similar species are discussed. New features were determined that were not previously given in descriptions of Colchicum species in the Flora of Turkey, and useful identification keys (for both flowering material and leafing-fruiting material) were prepared for all Colchicum species in the Mediterranean region of Turkey.

Ferula Parva Freyn & Bornm. (Apiaceae): A Contribution To An Enigmatic Species From Turkey, Mehmet Sağiroğlu, Hayri̇ Duman

Turkish Journal of Botany

Ferula parva Freyn & Bornm. was first collected from Central Anatolia (Turkey B5 Kayseri-Yozgat in declivibus apricis inter Kayseri et Yozgat, 1890) by Bornmüller. No specimens belonging to this species have been collected since the type and Andrasovszky specimens. When the Flora of Turkey was being prepared, Dr. H. Peşmen considered this species imperfectly known; therefore, it was not included in the keys. In the present paper, diagnostic morphological characters are discussed. In addition, its ecology, conservation status, SEM photographs of the surface of mericarps, and chromosome numbers are presented.

On The Taxonomy Of Plantaginaceae Juss. Sensu Lato: Evidence From Sem Of The Seed Coat, Azza Ahmed Shehata, Mohamed Hesham A. Loutfy

Turkish Journal of Botany

SEM of the seed coat was studied in 41 taxa of the Plantaginaceae sensu lato. The study included 31 taxa of Plantago L. and 10 taxa that were formerly assigned to the Scrophulariaceae, representing the genera Antirrhinum L., Digitalis L., Linaria Mill. and Veronica L. The obtained data were analysed by the NT sys-PC program package using the UPGMA clustering method. The study showed that Veronica possessed certain affinities to Plantago species, thus giving extra support to earlier views that Plantaginaceae sensu stricto and Scrophulariaceae sensu lato are allied through Veronica. The study also favoured the paraphyly of Plantago subgenus …

Recent Developments In International Biological Nomenclature, Werner Greuter Jan 2004

Recent Developments In International Biological Nomenclature, Werner Greuter

Turkish Journal of Botany

After a period of several decades of general neglect, biological systematics and taxonomy are again surfacing to the awareness of the scientific community and of policy makers. This we owe to the fact that they are the core disciplines of biodiversity research, now perceived to be a priority task in view of the impending threat of loss through extinction of a great number of species, and the wholesale destruction of ecosystems. Yet the renaissance of systematics and taxonomy is hampered by the inadequacy of the traditional rules governing the formation and use of scientific names of organisms. Names are a …

The Genus Crataegus L. (Rosaceae) With Special Reference To Hybridisation And Biodiversity In Turkey, Ali̇ Arslan Dönmez

Turkish Journal of Botany

The genus Crataegus L. has approximately 200 species worldwide. However, the number of the species is increased to 1200 species by some taxonomists. Traditionally, the genus is placed in the subfamily Maloideae and it is closely related to the genera Pyracantha M.Roem., Mespilus L. and Hesperomeles Lindl. The latest phylogenetic analysis of the genus shows that it is closest to the genus Osteomeles Lind. Crataegus is divided into 40 sections by various taxonomists. The genetic diversity centre of the section Crataegus ranges from Turkey to Iran. According to field observations in Turkey, new diversity centres are proposed. The latest studies …
