P-Protein Structure In Functional And Non-Functional Secondary Phloem In Armeniaca Vulgaris Lam. (Rosaceae), Gönül Algan, H. Nurhan Bakar Büyükkartal

Turkish Journal of Botany

P-proteins (phloem proteins) and their conformational changes in the functional and non-functional sieve elements in secondary phloem of Armeniaca vulgaris Lam. (Rosaceae) were examined with an electron microscope. Scattered throughout the cell, the fibrillar components of p-protein in active sieve elements were much denser sieve plate surfaces. P-proteins in inactive sieve elements, different from those of active ones, were observed to appear as disordered, short, thread-like fibrils with fern-like crystalline structure.

Changes In Abscisic Acid And Indole-3-Acetic Acid Concentrations In Funalia Trogii (Berk.) Bondartsev & Singer And Phanerochaete Chrysosporium Burds. Me446 Subjected To Salt Stress, Serpi̇l Ünyayar

Turkish Journal of Botany

Variations in abscisic acid (ABA) and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) concentrations were studied in Funalia trogii (Berk.) Bondartsev & Singer and Phanerochaete chrysosporium Burds. ME446 subjected to salt stress. The levels of ABA and IAA were determined by gas chromatography (GC) and UV-VIS spectrophotometry. The levels of hormones vary in the regulation of growth and in response to stress. It was found that ABA concentrations were higher in the salt stressed groups than in the control groups, whereas IAA concentrations were lower. These results show that, in fungi, ABA concentrations are positively and IAA concentrations negatively correlated with salt stress.

In this study, the levels of endogenous free, bound and total auxin (Indole-3-acetic acid, IAA), gibberellic acid (GA_3), abscisic acid (ABA) and cytokinin (zeatin) were examined in some species of mosses and lichens. For determination of the levels of these plant growth regulators, spectrophotometry was used. Our findings show that the mosses and lichens used in this study produce the plant growth regulators IAA, GA_3, ABA and zeatin.

In order to test how both water depth and Lemna minor L. affect the growth rate of algae, two different experiments were designed. In the first experiment, Scenedesmus quadricauda (Turp.) Breb. was cultured in sterilized Steinberg solution with reduced N and P levels in plastic containers at depths of 5, 10, 15 and 20cm. In this study, the seasonal variations in the macro-algal biomass in the Gulf of Antalya (north-eastern Mediterranean) were investigated. The seasonal variations of the macro-algal biomass were found to be related to the biology of the abundant species during less favourable seasons. These variations occurred usually as a result of a significant reduction in algal density [Padina pavonica (L.) A Contribution To The Bryophyte Flora Of Western Turkey: The Bryophyte Flora Of Madran Mountain And The Çine Valley (Aydın, Turkey), Adnan Erdağ

This study presents a survey on the bryophyte flora of Madran mountain and Çine valley (Aydın, Turkey). One hundred and thirty-three bryophyte species belonging to 35 families and 69 genera were recorded from the area. Phaeoceros laevis (L.) Prosk. is the only member of the hornworts while liverworts are represented by 15 species. The remaining 117 taxa belong to the Bryopsida. Thirty-five species are new records for square C11 according to Henderson's (1961) grid system.

\Alpha -Difluoromethylornithine Inhibits The Growth Of Fungus Macrophomina Phaseoli, Narçin Palavan Ünsal, Ayşin Çotuk, Yeşi̇m Kalaç Martini

Turkish Journal of Botany

\alpha -Difluoromethylornithine (DFMO), a specific enzyme activated inhibitor of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), significantly inhibited the mycelial growth of the fungus Macrophomina phaseoli (Tassi) Goidanich. Putrescine (Put), when added to the nutrient medium at a concentration of 0.25 mM, decreased the inhibitory effect of DFMO. These results suggest that polyamines (PAs) are essential for the growth of fungi and that DFMO is applicable to the alleviation or prevention of crop losses due to phytopathogenic fungi.

The Planktonic Diatoms Of Lake Çıldır (Ardahan-Turkey), Aydin Akbulut, Kazim Yildiz

This paper describes the planktonic diatom flora of Lake Çıldır. Samples were collected monthly between May 1991 and September 1993 at three different stations. A total of 94 diatom taxa were identified. In the study period, the most dominant and abundant taxa were Cyclotella meneghiniana Kütz., Aulacoseria granulata (Ehrenb.) Simonsen, Melosira varians C.Agardh and Navicula Bory spp. The diatom flora of the lake is rich in species and varieties and is similar to that in other parts of Turkey.

Seasonal changes in selected chemical, ecological and morphological characteristics of Flabellia petiolata (Turra) Nizam. and Halimeda tuna (Ellis & Sol.) J.V.Lamour., which are commonly found in the Gulf of Antalya, were studied. Crude protein content of F. petiolata was found to be higher than that of H. tuna, whereas the crude fat contents of the two species were similar. On the other hand, compared to F. petiolata, H. tuna was rich in inorganic material. Both species were observed to be dense on a seasonal basis in the sampling area and they reached their maximum length during summer.

The seven species of Salvia L. growing naturally in West Anatolia (Salvia tomentosa Mill., Salvia fruticosa Mill., Salvia smyrnaea Boiss., Salvia argentea L., Salvia horminum L., Salvia verbenaca L., and Salvia virgata Jacq.) and a cultivated form (Salvia officinalis L.) were selected as the study materials. The phenolic compounds extracted from the leaves of the species were separated by two- dimensional thin-layer chromatography. The effects of cold-shock treatment of Capsicum annuum L. buds at 4°C for 48 or 96 h, and the addition of 0.25% activated charcoal on embryo formation were examined. Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal nutrient medium was supplemented with combinations of 4 mg l^{-1} naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) and 1 mg l^{-1} benzyladenine (BA) or 1 mg l^{-1} NAA and 4 mg l^{-1} BA, together with 0.8% (w/v) agar and 3% (w/v) sucrose. Pollen Studies On Some Species Of The Genus Convolvulus L. (Convolvulaceae) From Morocco, Yusuf Menemen, Stephen L. Jury

The pollen grains of nine species of Convolvulus L. from Morocco were studied using scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. The species belong to three sections and four subsections: sections Convolvulus, Acanthocladi Boiss. and Inermes Boiss. and subsections Convolvulus, Spinescentes Boiss., Oleifolii Peter, and Diffusi Boiss. The pollen grains in the genus examined are all 3-zonocolpate. The pollen is suboblate, oblate-spheroidal, prolate-spheroidal and prolate. The nexine is thinner than the sexine and the tectum is distinctly perforated in all species. The pollen grains show variation within the genus in polar and equatorial axes, colpus length and shape. This study was undertaken with the aim of examining the soil-plant interactions of Cistus creticus L. and Cistus salviifolius L. in West Anatolia. The soil analysis data showed that these plants grow in different kinds of soils with sandy-clayey-loam, clayey-loam and loamy texture. The soils in general are not saline but are moderately and slightly alkaline, being rich in nitrogen and having a low level of phosphorus and potassium. They are unaffected by the calcium carbonate content in soils. The macrofungi collected during field trips from the Değirmenboğazı picnic area between 1998 and 2001 were investigated taxonomically. As a result of these field and laboratory studies, 54 taxa belonging to 19 families were identified. These species are presented as a list. Eleven of these taxa are new records to the Turkish Macromycota.

A New Record For The Algal Flora Of Turkey: Chaetomorpha Crassa (C.Ag.) Kütz. (Cladophoraceae, Chlorophyceae), Meral Apaydin Yağci, İsmai̇l İbrahi̇m Turna

Chaetomorpha crassa (C.Ag.) Kütz. was sampled from the brackish water of Beymelek Lagoon (Antalya). During the seasons in which the water temperature is between 18.9°C (autumn) and 23.4°C (summer), the development density of this species in this area is considerably higher than at other times.

Age Mediated Effects On The Alternative Respiratory Pathway In Leaves Of Rhodiola Rosea And Ajuga Reptans, Natalia V. Pystina, Roman A. Danilov

The influence of aging processes on respiration and the ratio of respiratory pathways in the leaves of Rhodiola rosea L. and Ajuga reptans L. under natural conditions was investigated. Young leaves had a higher respiration rate and higher activity of the alternative respiratory pathway than did mature leaves. The capacity of the alternative respiratory pathway did not show significant differences between the young and mature leaves of R. rosea and increased in the mature leaves of A. reptans (from 60% up to 88%). Phytoplankton Species' Succession And Nutrients In The Southern Black Sea (Bay Of Sinop), Muhammet Türkoğlu, Tufan Koray

The succession, annual cycle and diversity of phytoplankton species and seasonal changes in nutrients in the southern Black Sea (around Sinop peninsula) were investigated between August 1995 and July 1996. One species of Cyanophyceae, 83 taxa of Dinophyceae, 1 species of Prymnesiophyceae, 5 taxa of Dictyochophyceae, 88 taxa of Bacillariophyceae and 1 species of Euglenophyceae were identified. A list of phytoplankton species together with annual variations was prepared. Changes in community structure, density and diversity are discussed in relation to the physico-chemical features of the water column.

This investigation was carried out between 1994 and 1995 in order to determine the flora of Upper Ceyhan Valley. The research area is situated in the province of Kahramanmaraş and within C6 of the grid system. In the area, 412 taxa belonging to 68 families and 262 genera were determined. Twenty-eight (6.7%) taxa are endemics for Turkey. In the distribution of the taxa according to the floristic regions, Mediterranean elements with a rate of 23.5% are the most common. Irano-Turanian elements with a rate of 17.2% and Euro-Siberian elements with a rate of 3.4% were found. The families which have …

Salinity depresses ion activities, decreases the ratios of plant nutrients to Na and Cl ions, and consecutively suppresses plant growth. The objective of the present study was to distinguish the effects of NaCl and Na_2SO_4 salinity on the growth, ionic relations and proline accumulation of tomato plants. Tomato plants were grown for two months. Plant growth was reduced, but proline accumulation was enhanced by salinity. Total N and NO_3-N content of plants were decreased by both NaCl and Na_2SO_4 salinity. Sulphur content was not affected by the salt treatments. Salinity caused nutrient imbalances.
