Determining Sex Of Plains Pocket Gophers By Incisor Width, Ronald M. Case, Alan B. Sargeant Dec 1982

Determining Sex Of Plains Pocket Gophers By Incisor Width, Ronald M. Case, Alan B. Sargeant

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Biologists studying food habits of predators can often determine the prey species but not the sex of the prey from remains found at dens, in stomachs, scats, or pellets of predators. Knowledge of the sex of prey is useful in evaluating predator food habits as well as indicating sex specific differences in prey behavior.

Plains pocket gophers, Geomys bursarius, can be easily identified by the presence of two prominent grooves on the face of each upper incisor. This makes them ideal specimens for studying prey remains. In this paper, we present data that can be used to identify the …

Aspects Of Anuran Metabolism: Effects Of Chronic Hypoxia On Maximal Oxygen Uptake Rates And The Fate Of Lactic Acid, Thomas Charles Solberg Aug 1982

Aspects Of Anuran Metabolism: Effects Of Chronic Hypoxia On Maximal Oxygen Uptake Rates And The Fate Of Lactic Acid, Thomas Charles Solberg

Dissertations and Theses

Some aspects of anuran metabolism are examined, with special emphasis on possible limitations to aerobic metabolism and the effect of chronic hypoxia acclimation on maximal rates of aerobic metabolism and the metabolic fate of lactic acid accumulated after anaerobic metabolism.

Anuran Activity Energetics, Scott R. Landrey Jul 1982

Anuran Activity Energetics, Scott R. Landrey

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis presents two separate experiments concerning aerobic and anaerobic amphibian energetics. The first study (Part I) investigates differential alterations in the kinetics of the anaerobic enzyme lactate dehydrogenase, in nine species of anurans with varying natural histories. The second study (Part II) studies changes in different anaerobic and aerobic physiological parameters in a single species (Rana catesbeiana) after six weeks of chronic exercised, unexercised-captive and for field frogs. The common theme of these two experiments involves the potential for physiological changes due to environmental stress. Part I examines different species to infer a possible evolutionary relationship to …

Factors Affecting Thyrotropin Secretion In Superfused Rat Anterior Pituitary Cells, Frederick Scott Bartlow Jul 1982

Factors Affecting Thyrotropin Secretion In Superfused Rat Anterior Pituitary Cells, Frederick Scott Bartlow

Dissertations and Theses

The use of static in vitro pituitary cultures has been indispensible for examining the regulation of anterior pituitary hormone secretion. While the static cultures have shown the effects of various chemical stimulators of hormone secretion, the dynamics of such secretion has not been assessed before in vitro. The in vitro superfusion method, which partially stimulates in vivo physiologic conditions, allows for the observation of the dynamics of pituitary hormone secretion.

Mast Cell Histamine Release Induced By Portuguese Man-Of-War (Physalia) Venom, A. Lester Flowers Jun 1982

Mast Cell Histamine Release Induced By Portuguese Man-Of-War (Physalia) Venom, A. Lester Flowers

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Richet and Portier studied the immunization of dogs against attenuated toxic extracts of the sea anemone and showed that, when given secondary injections of sublethal amounts of native toxic extracts, the dogs experienced severe pruritus and insensitivity followed by death. They called this increased sensitivity to the toxins, anaphylaxis. Richet and Portier, and later Jacques and Schachter, and Uvnäs also studied the direct pruritic and histamine releasing effects of cnidarian (e.g. Physalia, Actinia, Cyanea), toxic extracts. While the anaphylactic effect, discovered by Richet and Portier, has been extended by numerous studies to provide the foundation of our current knowledge of …

Transport Of Dissolved Amino Acids By The Mussel, Mytilus Edulis: Demonstration Of Net Uptake From Natural Seawater, Donal T. Manahan, Stephen H. Wright, Grover C. Stephens, Michael A. Rice Mar 1982

Transport Of Dissolved Amino Acids By The Mussel, Mytilus Edulis: Demonstration Of Net Uptake From Natural Seawater, Donal T. Manahan, Stephen H. Wright, Grover C. Stephens, Michael A. Rice

Michael A Rice

High-performance liquid chromatography provides direct evidence for substantial removal of naturally occurring specific free amino acids during a single passage of water through the mantle cavity of mussels. This occurs during the few seconds required for passage of the water across the gill, and removal proceeds unabated at ambient concentrations as low as 38 nanomoles per liter.

Physiological Studies Of Heat Stress Acclimation During A Specific Exercise Regimen, Leland F. Morgans, Alan M. Johnson Jan 1982

Physiological Studies Of Heat Stress Acclimation During A Specific Exercise Regimen, Leland F. Morgans, Alan M. Johnson

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Eleven subjects were used to determine if the exercise regimen of racquetball could be used as a heat stress acclimator. Core temperature, skin temperature, sweat production, and weight loss were recorded during a racquetball match. Skin and core temperatures were determined by using thermistors. Sweat was collected with modified stress electrodes. Weight loss was recorded by comparing nude weights at the beginning and end of a match. The results indicated that an hour of strenuous racquetball play caused a significant increase in core temperature with subsequent sweating which resulted in a significant decrease in skin temperature and weight loss. The …

Menstrual Cycle Effects On Blood Pressure, Body Weight And Heart Rates During Rest, Exercise And Recovery On College Athletes, Dawn J. Shutter Jan 1982

Menstrual Cycle Effects On Blood Pressure, Body Weight And Heart Rates During Rest, Exercise And Recovery On College Athletes, Dawn J. Shutter

Masters Theses

Ten members of the Eastern Illinois University women's track team were used as subjects to determine the relationship of body weight, blood pressure and heart rate during rest, exercise and recovery to menstruation.

The subjects were tested on two different occasions. The first test was administered within twenty-four hours of the onset of menstruation. The second test was conducted seven days later. During both testing periods blood pressure, body weight and resting heart rate measurements were taken before beginning the treadmill protocol (progressive grade and speed increases up to 4% and 8 mph, respectively). The subjects ran on a motor …
