The purpose of this handout is to use evidence-based research to educate the adolescents population about the growing problem of overweight and obesity among youth in this age group. This handout describes the criteria for being considered overweight or obese during adolescence. Possible risk factors for adolescent overweight and obesity are identified. The handout discusses the burden of disease and the potential consequences associated with being overweight or obese as an adolescent. Informs audience about healthy food choices including fruits, vegetables, lean protein meats and fish. Making default choices based on good feelings, can have favorite foods but in moderation and portions. Parents help children plan and prepare meals. Keep the kitchen stocked with healthy foods and keep processed foods out.

This submission is an IRB Protocol design to assess the effect of the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program in accordance with the Nation School Lunch Program on 3rd-5th grade children from two separate schools. The study will measure fruit and vegetable intake as well as the correlation with BMI z-score over the course of the SY 18-19.
