Infectivity And Development Of Trichinella Spiralis In Germ-Free, Monocontaminated And Conventional Mice, Daulat Sitanggang Aug 1970

Infectivity And Development Of Trichinella Spiralis In Germ-Free, Monocontaminated And Conventional Mice, Daulat Sitanggang

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of the experiment was to compare the development of Trichinella spiralis in germ-free, Lactobacillus casei monocontaminated, Escherichia coli monocontaminated and conventional mice. The criteria used in the experiments were the recovery of adults and larvae of T. spiralis after 72 hours and one month post-infection, respectively. which gave an indication of the effects of no bacteria or only a certain, single species of bacterium on the development of this nematode in mice.

Germ-free T. spiralis larvae were obtained by washing them several times with sterile normal saline, and treatment with antibiotics. The gavaging procedure was done without anesthetization …

Immune Blocking Of Fluorescent Antibody Staining Of Streptococcus Group A Compared With Anti-Streptolysin O, George K. Peck Jun 1970

Immune Blocking Of Fluorescent Antibody Staining Of Streptococcus Group A Compared With Anti-Streptolysin O, George K. Peck

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The fluorescent antibody blocking antibody (FABA) test has been discribed and compared with the conventional antistreptolysin 0 antibody (ASOA) test in the detection of Streptococcus pyogenes group A antibodies in sera samples.

A slide inhibition test was used to detect the presence of FABA in the following manner; (a) fix group A streptococcal cells to a slide, (b) incubate these cells with the patient's serum for thirty minutes, (c) wash off serum with buffered saline and dry, (d) incubate these same cells with group A streptococcal fluorescent tagged antibody for thirty minutes, (e) wash and dry as before, and (f) …

Taxonomy And Ecology Of Fungi Imperfecti From Four Locations In Utah Lake, Utah Co., Utah, Laird Max Hartman May 1970

Taxonomy And Ecology Of Fungi Imperfecti From Four Locations In Utah Lake, Utah Co., Utah, Laird Max Hartman

Theses and Dissertations

Fungi imperfecti were cultured from water and bottom sediment samples collected at four locations of Utah Lake. These study sites included: (a) The mouth of Provo River, the largest fresh-water tributary entering Utah Lake, (b) Mud Lake, a large shallow area known for its high nitrogen content, (c) the entrance of the Spanish Fork River into the lake, a large fresh-water tributary containing wastes from industry and agricultural enterprises, (d) Jordan River, the only natural outlet of Utah Lake. One hundred and thirty-eight species of fungi imperfecti were identified. A total of 89 species were isolated from the Spanish Fork …

Description And Seasonal Variation In Incidence Of A New Species Of Myxosporidian Parasite (Class Myxosporidea) Of The Bluegill Sunfish, Lepomis Macrochirus Rafineque, In Kentucky, Stephen Bayes Crider May 1970

Description And Seasonal Variation In Incidence Of A New Species Of Myxosporidian Parasite (Class Myxosporidea) Of The Bluegill Sunfish, Lepomis Macrochirus Rafineque, In Kentucky, Stephen Bayes Crider

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A new histozoic myxosporidian parasite (Class Mysoxporidea), Myxobolus meglitschi sp. nov., infecting young-of-the-year and yearling bluegill sunfish, Lepomis macrochirus Raf., from Shanty Hollow Lake, Warren County, Kentucky was described. Phenology was investigated from January 20 to December, 1969.

The magnitude of infection varied seasonally in bluegill. Incidence was highest in July and August (43.92) in host populations, declining, but not disappearing from September to December 20, 1969. The infection exhibited a yearly mean incidence of 22.318.

The pattern of distribution of cysts on hosts varied seasonally. During periods of low incidence cysts were confined primarily to a postanal area below …

Formation Of Centriole And Centriole-Like Structures During Meiosis And Mitosis In Labyrinthula Sp. (Rhizopodea, Labyrinthulida) - An Electron Microscope Study, Frank O. Perkins Jan 1970

Formation Of Centriole And Centriole-Like Structures During Meiosis And Mitosis In Labyrinthula Sp. (Rhizopodea, Labyrinthulida) - An Electron Microscope Study, Frank O. Perkins

VIMS Articles

The fine structure of mitosis in vegetative cells of the marine protist Labyrinthida was found to involve formation of two approximately spherical, electron-dense aggregates (termed protocentrioles) 200-300 nm in diameter. Spindle microtubules were directly attached to the structures. The aggregates contained centrally located cartwheel structures but no microtubular elements in the form of a centriole-like cylinder. In non-sporulating cells the aggregates occurred only during mitosis or possibly in late interphase cells. During meiotic zoosporulation de novo centriole formation was observed. Vegetative spindle cells, which contained no centrioles, procentrioles, or centriolar plaques, aggregated then changed into approximately round or oval presporangia …

The Effectiveness Of Camphorated Paramonochlorophenol, Metacresyl Acetate, And Prednisolone In Combination As An Antimicrobial Agent, Maurice Cutler Jan 1970

The Effectiveness Of Camphorated Paramonochlorophenol, Metacresyl Acetate, And Prednisolone In Combination As An Antimicrobial Agent, Maurice Cutler

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Post-treatment discomfort following endodontic procedures can be caused by inflammation due to injudicious use of intracanal medicaments. Camphorated paramonochlorophenol, metacresyl acetate, and prednisolone in combination is advocated to reduce the inflammatory potential of the germicide and thus reduce the occurrence of post-operative pain. It is imperative that a medicament retain antimicrobial activity while reducing inflammatory potential.

This investigation was undertaken toward determining on an in vitro quantitative bactericidal versus bacteriostatic basis by use of the broth dilution test tube method whether camphorated paramonochlorophenol, metacresyl acetate, and prednisolone in combination retains antimicrobial activity comparable to selected other commonly used nonspecific germicides. …

Emergency Chlorination Of Farm Water Supplies, H C. Hughes Jan 1970

Emergency Chlorination Of Farm Water Supplies, H C. Hughes

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

TOWARDS the end of summer (and especially in a drought) the risk of water in dams, soaks, wells or tanks becoming polluted is increased.

Bore water is much less likely to be affected unless the bore is poorly sited near a farm building, such as a shearing or milking shed, a pig pen, or a septic tank system.

The Effect Of Gamma Irradiation On Growth Of Seven Strains Of Trypanosoma Avium, Roy Wesley Leid Jr. Jan 1970

The Effect Of Gamma Irradiation On Growth Of Seven Strains Of Trypanosoma Avium, Roy Wesley Leid Jr.

All Master's Theses

The prime motivating factor in the present study was the desire to show significant differences in radio-sensitivities within six strains of Trypanosoma avium. A seventh strain was later added for the last two irradiation treatments. Gross morphology and differences in growth curves associated with varying temperatures suggested that the strains being cultured were not the same. With these differences in mind, the strains were subjected to different dosage levels of gamma irradiation.
