Accidental Ingestion Of Anticoagulant Resulting In A Severe Hemorrhagic Diathesis, R. W. Monto, E. R. Williams, T. H. Greidanus, E. J. Van Slyck

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

This case history of a 45-year-old woman, who had been issued Dicumarol instead of Dronactin in a pharmacy-filled prescription, describes an emergency therapeutic program to control hemorrhage with vitamin K, adrenal corticosteroids, and the giving of fresh blood. In a patient with a bleeding disorder, unintentional ingestion of oral anticoagulants is to be suspected if the prothrombin time is markedly elevated, if the patient has been previotisly treated with an oral anticoagulant, or is engaged in a medical or paramedical occupation. Diagnosis is confirmed by finding a deficiency of factors II, VII, IV, and X. and by the presence of …

Treatment Of Hyperthyroidism From The Autonomous Multinodular Goiter, J. Martin Miller, Richard E. Weber, Melvin A. Block

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

47 patients with large multinodular goiters and "non-Graves" hyperthyroidism were treated surgically or given radioiodine therapy. The severity of the disease and cardiac complications were comparable in each group. Results favor subtotal thyroidectomy if the disease is other than mild or if atrial fibrillation is present.

A Method Of Hospital Infection Surveillance Incorporating The Use Of The Computer, Bruce W. Steinhauer, Frank Cox, George H. C. Stobie, Edward L. Quinn Jun 1967

A Method Of Hospital Infection Surveillance Incorporating The Use Of The Computer, Bruce W. Steinhauer, Frank Cox, George H. C. Stobie, Edward L. Quinn

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The records of all patients in the hospital on a particular date were studied for hospital-acquired infections. Results were compared with a continuing surveillance based on discharge reporting. Collection of data was programmed for analysis by using the hospital computer. Thirteen per cent of the patients manifested an infection after admission, but before or on the survey day. Results elsewhere are similar. Areas of the hospital with a relatively higher incidence of infection did not have clusters of particular pathogens.

Normal Serum Protein Levels In Syrian (Golden) Hamsters: Compared With The Protein Levels In Sv 40 Tumor Bearing And Sv 40 Immune Hamsters, Hajime Hayashi, Nansie Sharpless, Gerald A. Logrippo

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

A study of 149 hamsters indicates that there are periods in life when the animal is immune to tumor induction by a known virus. By studying normal serum protein levels, standards were established for the adult age and for the tumor forming period. The data emphasize the importance of the immunologic status of the host for virus induction of tumors.

Carbon Dioxide Fixation In Schistosoma Mansoni, Clint Earl Carter Jun 1967

Carbon Dioxide Fixation In Schistosoma Mansoni, Clint Earl Carter

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Adults of the blood fluke Schistosoma mansoni were perfused from the hepatic portal system of CF1 female mice sixty to seventy days post infection. The worms were then incubated in Eagle’s minimal essential medium with glutamate and 0.03 mg/100 ml of nonlabelled aspartic acid. To this medium was added 10 μc of either NaH1403, glucose-UC14 or aspartate-4-C14. The worms were found to fix carbon from the NaH1403 and to incorporate the glucose and aspartate. The amount of activity recovered in five different chemical fractions after two hours incubation was determined …

Mandibular And Alveolar Growth In Dog Following Infusion Of 5-Fluorouricil, Richard D. Pfeiffer Jun 1967

Mandibular And Alveolar Growth In Dog Following Infusion Of 5-Fluorouricil, Richard D. Pfeiffer

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The action of a chemotherapeutic agent as a tool in studying its effect upon a primary growth center, the mandibular condyle, was investigated. So far as can be ascertained, no studies have been reported where these growth sites have been eliminated or modified by the use of chemotherapeutic growth inhibitors.

Observation of mandibular and alveolar growth following the infusion into the left external carotid artery of a cancer chemotherapeutic agent, 5-Fluorouricil (Roach-Hoffman), was noted. Comparisons were made between the infused and the uninfused sides of the mandible observing gross growth changes.

Four dogs, aged 75 days, were infused with varying …

Vegetable Entrees In Nitrogen Balance And Obesity Studies, Gloria Tyndall Jun 1967

Vegetable Entrees In Nitrogen Balance And Obesity Studies, Gloria Tyndall

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The first study was designed to evaluate by the nitrogen balance method the protein quality of a pure-vegetarian diet containing about 6 grams of nitrogen per day. The group as a whole maintained nitrogen equilibrium the average being - 0.11 grams of nitrogen per day. Two subjects were not in nitrogen balance, however, factors other than diet may have contributed to these results and are discussed in the thesis. Hemoglobin, serum cholesterol and total serum proteins did not change significantly during the study. The average true digestibility of 5 of the subjects was 85 percent. It was concluded that this …

The Effect Of Schistosoma Mansoni On Free Amino Acid Levels In Mice, Richard D. Tkachuck Jun 1967

The Effect Of Schistosoma Mansoni On Free Amino Acid Levels In Mice, Richard D. Tkachuck

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Free amino acid levels in the blood plasma of mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni Sambon, 1907, were measured at 3, 6, and 9 weeks post-infection with an automatic amino acid analyzer. Significant differences between experimental and control animals occurred at all three time periods. At 3 weeks, asparagine, alanine, citrulline, proline, methionine, and threonine levels all were lower in the infected animals. At 6 weeks, four differences were noted. Alpha-amino-n-butyric acid, ornithine, lysine, and histidine all had lower values in infected animals. At 9 weeks there were 12 differences. Tyrosine, phenylalanine, threonine, serine, proline, citrulline, glycine, alanine, valine, isoleucine, and …

The Effect Of Glucose On Neutrophilic Phagocytosis, Donald F. Adams Jun 1967

The Effect Of Glucose On Neutrophilic Phagocytosis, Donald F. Adams

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Samples of blood were obtained from thirty healthy young adult males (Loma Linda University School of Dentistry), and contaminated with bacteria. Varying concentrations of pure glucose were added to this mixture to observe the effect of the glucose on in vitro neutrophilic phagocytosis. As the glucose levels increased a statistically significant suppression was noted in the ability of the neutrophilic leukocytes to engulf Staphylococcus epidermidis.

It was not possible, however, to predict the degree of suppression for any particular level of glucose added nor is it possible to state that suppression will occur in any one individual.

Two methods of …

Relationship Of Vertebral Size To Fracture In Osteoporotic Spines, Richmond W. Smith, Peter M. Taft Jun 1967

Relationship Of Vertebral Size To Fracture In Osteoporotic Spines, Richmond W. Smith, Peter M. Taft

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

This study is an extension of early observations that Negro women were free of vertebral fractures and had lower mean values for vertebral dimensions than white women. Skeletal dimensions should be considered in the further study of osteoporosis and its structural consequences, the authors state.
