The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of Leishmania infantum and Dirofilaria immitis infection in dogs housed outdoors in Aydın province and Selçuk in western Turkey. Anti-Leishmania antibodies were evaluated in sera samples by IFA and ELISA techniques. The presence of D. immitis microfilariae was determined in blood samples by use of the modified Knott’s test. Using the IFA and ELISA on 158 dogs surveyed, 5 (3.2%) were positive for anti-Leishmania antibodies while 22 (13.9%) were found infected with D. immitis. Only 2 out of 5 seropositive dogs exhibited major signs of canine visceral leishmaniosis, and amastigotes …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In a 9-month-old male German Shepherd, degenerative arthritis and incongruity of the elbow joint were observed due to premature closure of the distal radial growth plate. An obvious shortening was present in the radius and ulna, when compared to the contralateral leg. Corticotomy was carried out on the radius and an Ilizarov apparatus was applied to the leg by passing Kirschner wires through the proximal and distal fragments of the radius. The radius was lengthened 1 mm daily starting from postoperative day 4. Consequently, the incongruity of the elbow joint was corrected and functional recovery was observed to a great …

The tumor masses were encapsulated within a thin capsule and lobulated with yellowish-brown areas and were elastic in structure. Yellowish-white and red-brown focal areas were seen on the cut surface. In addition, a yellowish-white tumor mass measuring 2 x …

Biochemical analyses of blood serums showed that potassium levels were increased, and sodium and total protein levels were decreased. A contrast radiographic examination showed that colon walls were thickened; stenosis, dilatation and shortening of the colons had occurred; and the …

Color-Coded Duplex Sonography Of Abdominal Blood Vessels In Dogs, Hali̇l Selçuk Bi̇ri̇ci̇k, Adi̇l Öztürk, Ni̇hat Şindak

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to demonstrate normal duplex patterns of extra (aorta abdominalis, vena cava caudalis) and intraparenchymatous (vena porta, vena hepatica, renal interlober and splenic artery) vessels with color-coded duplex ultrasonography in healthy dogs. While the wave form of the intraparenchymatous vessels like the vena cava caudalis and hepatic vein were mainly affected by the pressure conditions of the intrathoracic and intraabdominal pressure changes due to respiration and cardiac pulsations, portal blood flow was not affected. The wave form of the aorta abdominalis was triphasic due to tissue resistance. It was biphasic in the renal interlober and …

A total of 12 dogs (two groups 6 dogs each) were premedicated with either xylazine (group I) or butorphanol (group II) and anaesthetized with ketamine HCl and monitored at 0, 5, 15, 30 and 60 min after induction. Sedative effects in both groups started within 15 min. Respiratory rate was significantly decreased in group I (P < 0.05). Body temperature was significantly altered after 15 min in group I (P < 0.05 and P < 0.001). Haematological analyses indicated that there were no differences in pH values between the groups. It was concluded that butorphanol followed by ketamine was comparable with xylazine plus ketamine for the induction of anaesthesia in healthy dogs.
