Relationships Between Fitness Levels, Physical Activity Participation, Hemoglobin A1c Levels, And Motor Proficiency In Adolescent Patients With Type 1 Diabetes., Caroline E. Frye May 2024

Relationships Between Fitness Levels, Physical Activity Participation, Hemoglobin A1c Levels, And Motor Proficiency In Adolescent Patients With Type 1 Diabetes., Caroline E. Frye

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Physical activity is a critical component of a healthy lifestyle and can lead to improved fitness levels and blood glucose management, as well as decreased HbA1c levels. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine if there are relationships between cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, body composition, physical activity participation, hemoglobin A1C levels, and motor proficiency in adolescent patients with T1D. METHODS: Pediatric patients with a diagnosis of T1D enrolled in a sports medicine program were invited to participate in this study. Retrospective clinical chart reviews were conducted to determine participant’s sociodemographic and anthropometric measures and most …

Evaluating The Effect Of Automated Driving Systems On Drivers' Visual Attention, Reem Jalal Eddine Jan 2024

Evaluating The Effect Of Automated Driving Systems On Drivers' Visual Attention, Reem Jalal Eddine

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the automotive industry's recent shift towards automation, understanding the interaction between humans and automated system vehicles becomes crucial. The current technology in these systems is level 2 vehicles, where the driver still has to take-over the vehicle manually when needed. However, concerns were raised about the safety of these vehicles due to the monotonous monitoring role of the driver which leads to low cognitive workload. Using the inverted U-model, a low cognitive workload leads to boredom which might cause task disengagement and a severe loss of situation awareness. Thus, this study aimed to investigate attentional costs and recall performance …

A Descriptive Analysis Of The Upper Body Kinematics Of Conductors, Jessica Rosemary Flammia Jan 2024

A Descriptive Analysis Of The Upper Body Kinematics Of Conductors, Jessica Rosemary Flammia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A high prevalence of the physical symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders has been identified in conductors (Luger and Trouli, 2023; Geraldo and Fiorini, 2022). Both repetition and non-neutral postures have been identified as risk factors in the development of musculoskeletal disorders (Kumar, 2008; Frievalds, 2018) and are clearly present in a conductor’s job description. The current study aims to examine conductors’ exposures to these factors by answering the guiding research question: what does the upper body movement patterns of a conductor look like? Seven conductors were instrumented with the Xsens MVN AwindaTM motion capture system during one of their ensembles’ regular …

Chronic Training Load And Dorsiflexion Range Of Motion Throughout A Season In Professional American Soccer, Tristan L. Young Jan 2024

Chronic Training Load And Dorsiflexion Range Of Motion Throughout A Season In Professional American Soccer, Tristan L. Young

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Soccer has an incredibly complex movement profile. Players experience various types of strains on their body from the requirement to land in awkward positions while maintaining the ability to quickly accelerate and decelerate. Dorsiflexion range of motion (DFROM) is of concern due to the movement profile and ball control that requires constant eccentric and concentric actions at the talocrural joint. With an American soccer season spanning across nine months these demands can contribute to overuse, which has been linked to restricted range of motion. Restricted DFROM and asymmetries have been identified as injury predictors, but their relationship to performance has …

Nutrient Intake, Performance, And Body Composition In Preseason Wrestlers, Gregory Coapstick Jan 2024

Nutrient Intake, Performance, And Body Composition In Preseason Wrestlers, Gregory Coapstick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

BACKGROUND: College athletes, especially in weight class sports, often experience energy deficits. Weight class sports such as wrestling are at greatest risk for deficiencies, and little is known about the relationships between body composition, nutrient intake, and performance in these athletes.
OBJECTIVES: The purposes of this study were to quantify macronutrient and micronutrient intake of pre-season male collegiate wrestlers and compare to recommendations, and examine relationships among nutritional intakes, body composition, and performance measurements of strength, anaerobic, and aerobic capacity.
METHODS: Male Division I wrestlers (n=11, mean ± SD age: 21.3±1.7 years, wrestling experience: 14.9±2.5 years) were recruited during preseason. …

Effects Of An 8-Week Undulating Training Program On Firefighter Body Composition, Muscular Fitness, And Occupational Performance, Dylan R. Brown Jan 2024

Effects Of An 8-Week Undulating Training Program On Firefighter Body Composition, Muscular Fitness, And Occupational Performance, Dylan R. Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

BACKGROUND: Firefighting is a high-risk occupation that requires a certain level of health and fitness to ensure optimal occupational performance. Improving body composition by reducing fat mass and increasing muscular strength and power are two great methods for improving performance. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine how an 8-week undulating training program affects firefighter body composition, muscular strength/power, and occupational performance. METHODS: A total of 33 active male firefighters were recruited for this study. Prior to the start of the 8-week undulating program, all participants were pre-tested on several fitness variables including body composition, strength, …
