The Natural Provenance: Ecoliteracy In Higher Education In Mississippi, Sarah Elizabeth Wheeless May 2010

The Natural Provenance: Ecoliteracy In Higher Education In Mississippi, Sarah Elizabeth Wheeless

Dissertations

Researchers have suggested that there is an increasing apathy in the study of natural history both in academic settings and in the scientific community (Schmidly, 2005). Natural history is the cornerstone of ecological literacy. However, most studies of environmental knowledge do not directly address knowledge of local natural history. Instead, they concern knowledge of human environmental issues, environmental concepts, or broad ecological knowledge. Ecoliteracy established the study of natural history as fundamental to environmental knowledge and seeks to determine levels of knowledge of local environments and factors associated with that knowledge (Pilgrim et al., 2007).

This study investigated ecoliteracy in …

Biological Sciences Research

A common problem faced by primarily undergraduate institutions is the lack of funding and material support needed to adequately expose students to modern biology, including synthetic biology. To help alleviate this problem, the Genome Consortium for Active Teaching (GCAT) was founded in 2000 by Malcolm Campbell at Davidson College to bring genomics into the undergraduate curriculum. GCAT’s first tangible activity was to serve as a central clearinghouse both for the purchase and reading of DNA microarrays and for information on how to execute genomics experiments at undergraduate institutions. In response to the evolution of molecular biology in the last decade, …

College Of Agricultural Sciences And Natural Resources: 17th Annual Report August 1, 2009-July 31, 2010

College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR): Annual Reports

Introduction excerpt

Seventeenth Annual Report for the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR). Reflects on the accomplishments of our faculty, staff and students, reviews the year, and serves as an archive of accomplishments. Primarily covers the period August 1, 2009 to July 31, 2010.

Seventy-three schools competed for recognition as innovators in undergraduate education. Only 16 were selected. UNL is one of the 16 - the only one in our peer group as well as the only one in the Big 12. In fact, UNL is one of only five major research universities to be named ‘first tier’ …

People And Nature Adapting To A Changing Climate: Charting Maine’S Course Report, University Of Maine Climate Change Institute Jan 2010

People And Nature Adapting To A Changing Climate: Charting Maine’S Course Report, University Of Maine Climate Change Institute

General University of Maine Publications

Building on Maine’s Climate Future, in 2009 the Maine Legislature charged the Maine Department of Environmental Protection to bring together a broad group of stakeholders across business, agriculture, forestry, marine, health, conservation, and transportation interests to initiate a climate change stakeholder adaptation process. More than 70 groups representing government, private industry, non-governmental organizations, municipalities, and the University of Maine participated in the discussions and working committees. In February 2010, Maine DEP presented the Legislature with a report on the initial year of work in this stakeholder adaptation process that included a description of findings and recommendations.

The summary report …
