Risks and uncertainties are prevalent in timber production due to the nature and length of the production process. This paper examines the volatility of timber prices and the effects of some economic uncertainties and risks such as fluctuations in timber prices and the interest rate on the economic returns of black walnut and red oak plantations. Historical patterns of timber prices for black walnut and oaks are investigated and compared with those of other timber species and stock price. To advance techniques for screening large data sets of diverse structures for toxicologically active compounds, an algorithm was developed that is not dependent upon a predetermined and specified toxicophore or an alignment of conformers to a lead compound. Instead, the approach provides the means to identify and quantify specific global and local stereoelectronic characteristics associated with active compounds through a comparison of energeticallyreasonable conformer distributions for specific descriptors. To illustrate the algorithm, the stereoelectronic requirements associated with the binding affinity of 28 steroidal and non-steroidal ligands to the androgen receptor were defined. Walnut veneer frorn sites in Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana was analyzed for color attributes and chemical properties. Veneer color also was compared to an industry color standard. Soil chemical and physical properties were measured on selected sites in each state. In general, walnut trees grown on soils with equal proportions of sand, silt, and clay have better veneer color attributes than trees grown on soils with high clay I sand or clay I silt ratios.

Concentrations of indicator bacteria such as fecal coliform (FC) and fecal streptococcus (FS) are often used to assess the suitability of waters for their intended use(s) and to allocate resources for water quality improvement measures. There is evidence, however, that concentrations of FC and FS can be influenced by variables such as season and flow rate during sampling, which could lead to biased results. The objective of this study was to assess the impacts of season and flow rate on concentrations of FC and FS. Autotrophic picoplankton had average monthly concentrations of 73.5 X 10⁶ cells/L in the Pagan River, with summer-early fall maxima of 10⁸ cells/L. The abundance peaks increased with rising water temperatures, declining to their least abundance in mid-winter (10⁵ cells/L).

The study area covers the Tambellup Town and the Jam Creek Catchment (top photograph on cover). The Tambellup Town is located 115 km north of Albany. The town has a population of 360 people (800 in the whole Shire). Tambellup is experiencing increasing salinity problems. Saline groundwater levels are close to the soil surface and cause deterioration of buildings, roads, infrastructure, death of trees and scalding of land including the sporting grounds. "Phytoplankton production in lake ecosystems is frequently controlled by amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus (Smith 1982, Elser et al. 1990), as well as minor- and micro-nutrients (Wurtsbaugh & Horne 1983, Wurtsbaugh 1988, Lovstad & Bjorndalen 1990). Nutrient limitation is often studied to determine which nutrient(s) should be reduced to control lake eutrophication (Schindler 1974(. We investigated how epilimnetic fertilization would affect chlorophyll levels and light penetration of oligotrophic sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) lakes and how the resulting self-shading would affect primary production of the prominent deep chlorophyll maxima (DCM) of the lakes. Epilimnetic nutrient additions to large mesocosms (330 m3) in Redfish Lake, Idaho, increased levels of primary productivity and chlorophyll a but decreased Secchi depths and light available in the metalimnion and hypolimnion. Redfish Lake and other Sawtooth Valley (Idaho) lakes had DCM in which the mean chlorophyll a peaks were 240-1000% of mean epilimnetic chlorophyll a concentrations. The DCM existed at low …

We used dual-beam hydroacoustics and echo integration techniques, combined with midwater trawling and gillnetting, to assess the abundance and distribution of the endangered Snake River juvenile sockeye salmon and resident kokanee (both Oncorhynchus nerka) in Sawtooth Valley lakes of Idaho during September 1991 and 1992. Abundance of O. nerka varied among the four lakes containing this species (12,500–257,000) and varied between years in Redfish Lake (86,400 in 1994 and 241,000 in 1992) and Alturas Lake (230,000 in 1991 and 257,000 in 1992). In an effort to gain a more complete understanding of existing vegetative communities of the Northern Great Plains Steppe Ecoregion, rapid ecological assessment was undertaken throughout the ecoregion during the field season of 1997. Field office personnel of The Nature Conservancy and private contractors evaluated previously delineated regions in accordance with methodology determined in May of 1997. A simple field method for the determination of ammonium picrate and picric acid in soil was developed. Picric acid is a strong acid with a pKa 5 0.80, and is colorless when dissolved in an organic solvent, whereas its anion ( picrate) is bright yellow. Picric acid and picrate ions were extracted from undried soil by shaking with acetone; any picric acid extracted was rapidly converted to picrate in the wet acetone. Picrate was extracted from the acetone soil extracts by passing the solutions through a solid-phase anion exchanger to remove interferences. Acidified acetone was used to convert the picrate …

The Virginia Game Fish Tagging Program (VGFfP), a cooperative project of the Virginia Marine Resources Commission and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), enjoyed its second full year of operation in 1996. Participation in the project, which is funded with revenues generated by Virginia's saltwater recreational fishing license, nearly doubled with 127 anglers volunteering as taggers compared to 64 in 1995.

Land resources series

Soils of approximately 80,000 hectares in the West Gingin area, 100 km north of Perth, were surveyed from 1987 to 1989. The area lies on the Swan Coastal Plain within the Gingin Shire. The soils were mapped by the free survey method at a scale of 1:50,000. Thirty-five major soil associations and complexes were identified. These soils have been formed from various parent materials in a a range of depositional environments. Siliceous sand and sodic soils formed in alluvial-lacustrine sediments predominate. The main soils were sampled for chemical and physical analysis and their morphological, chemical and physical properties are discussed …
