The alfalfa leaf-weevil (Phytonomus murinus Fab.) which has during the last three years been doing considerable damage in the central part of this State, is a European insect which by some means unknown has been introduced in to Utah. The species appears to be not uncommon throughout Europe and parts of Asia and Africa. It belongs to the large order of hard-shelled insects called beetles (Coleoptera) and in a group generally called snout-beetles (Family Curculionidae). To this same group belong many of our most serious pests, such as the plum curculio, cotton boll-weevil and strawberry weevil.

The species described in this paper were for the most part collected by the Rev. Robert E. Brown, S. J., although a few are from the material gathered by the Rev. William A. Stanton, S. J. Under each species credit has been given to the collector. In the Philippine Journal of Science a Father Brown has given a list of the species of Hymenoptera found in the islands and has cited several names sent him by the late Dr. W. H. The following observations were made on tours in the Central Provinces and Berar, in 1908 and 1909. The first of the tours comprised a visit to the hill of Asirgarb in Nimar (26-28. ix. 08) and a journey by road from Ellichpur over the Satpuras through the forests of the Melghat to Lewada where the Sipna valley opens towards the river Tapti, (3-19. x. 09): the second comprised a visit to Nagpur (14-22. ii. 09) and the third an excursion into the Melghat from Akot, along the Ban valley and to Jalgaon in the Buldana district (16-'-26. ix. 09).
