Feeding Behavior Of Sweet Potato Weevil, Cylas Formicarius (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Brentidae) On Three Sweet Potato, Ipomoea Batatas L. Cultivars Grown In Tarlac, Philippines, Jerah Mystica Novenario, Flor Ceballo-Alcantara

The Philippine Agricultural Scientist

Sweet potato is grown in tropical countries for its edible tubers, which have become an essential food source. It is usually propagated through vine-cutting, which can be obtained from harvested plants or nurseries intended for cutting production only. The recurrent use of vines may cause increased weevil infestation. The crop is known to be infested with insect pests. More importantly, the sweet potato weevil, Cylas formicarius, targets the tubers, thus, causing the economic losses. Sweet potato farmers in Tarlac claim that only one sweet potato cultivar is being attacked by C. formicarius, however, it was found in this experiment that …

Samples of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) plants infected with witches’ broom disease were gathered from 13 provinces in the Philippines. Mealybugs were observed to occur in nine out of the 13 cumulative samples. The most predominant among several mealybug species observed was identified as Pseudococcus jackbeardsleyi Gimpel and Miller. P. jackbeardsleyi is not yet known to transmit phytoplasma, especially the one causing cassava witches’ broom (CWB). However, its occurrence in almost 70% of the CWB-infected samples provides circumstantial evidence that it may be related to the spread of the pathogen. This formal report of identification is in support of the …

Susceptibility Of Pre-Adult Biological Stages Of Mythimna Separata (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) To Three Entomopathogenic Fungi (Hypocreales), Melissa P. Montecalvo, Marcela M. Navasero

The Philippine Agricultural Scientist

Armyworms are polyphagous insect pests of agricultural crops. Their population is usually managed below threshold level using insecticides. However, a single control measure is insufficient to attain a sustainable pest management. Hence, this research was conducted to assess the three species of entomopathogenic fungi as potential biological control agents against Mythimna separata (Walker) or paddy armyworm. Dose mortality assays were conducted to determine the pathogenicity of Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill., Metarhizium anisopliae (Metschn.) Sorokin, and Metarhizium rileyi (Farlow) Kepler, S.A. Rehner and Humber against various biological stages of M. separata including egg, 1st to 6th larval instars, prepupa, …

'Superex') Subjected To Different Preharvest Treatments To Control Armyworm [Spodoptera Exigua (Hubner Lepidoptera: Noctuidae], Daphne Cassandra Gonzales, Ryan Anthony Lualhati, Kim John Nate, Cielo Azul Dumlao, Emmanuel Amatorio, Elda Esguerra, Bonifacio Cayabyab

The Philippine Agricultural Scientist

Heavy reliance on synthetic pesticides has led to insecticide resistance of pests such as the onion armyworm, leading to the use of alternative strategies such as biopesticides. While studies on the efficacy of these biopesticides on pest control and yield exist, their subsequent effects on the quality and postharvest behavior of bulb onions during cold storage need to be determined. Allium cepa L. ‘Superex’ yellow type onion plants were subjected to preharvest treatments of microbial (NPV crude), botanical (neem oil), synthetic insecticide (chlorfenapyr), and Farmer’s Practice (control) for the control of onion armyworm (Spodoptera exigua (Hubner)). Bulbs were then …
