Controlled Radiation Capsule For Precision And Rapid Cancer Treatment, Hoseon Lee, Zsolt Kollar, Bailey R. White, Junia Nguyen, David Roque, Sowjanya Palagani
Symposium of Student Scholars
This research aims to transform cancer treatment through the optimization of brachytherapy, with a focus on reducing treatment duration, setup complexities, and financial burdens, all while emphasizing patient safety. Patients living at a distance from radiation clinics, particularly those undergoing extended Low Dose Radiation brachytherapy, often struggle with the formidable financial challenges associated with securing nearby accommodations. In response to these issues, the research introduces a radiation capsule designed to condense the conventional six-month treatment period to approximately just one week, thereby significantly reducing the duration of required accommodations. This capsule is especially relevant considering the construction cost of $40 …
Validation Of Machine Vision And Action Sport Cameras For 3d Motion Analysis Model Reconstruction, John David Johnson, Michael Hales, Randy Emert
Validation Of Machine Vision And Action Sport Cameras For 3d Motion Analysis Model Reconstruction, John David Johnson, Michael Hales, Randy Emert
Faculty and Research Publications
The study investigated the feasibility of using action sport cameras for motion analysis research. Data acquired from two different marker-based motion capture systems and six different camera combinations were analyzed for motion reconstruction accuracy. Two different calibration procedures were used to determine the influence on marker position reconstruction. Static and dynamic calibration mean merit score differences between the reference and experimental camera systems were 0.4 mm and 1.3 mm, respectively. Angular displacement difference between the reference and experimental camera systems range between 0.1 and 2.0 degrees. A systematic bias (− 0.54 to 0.19 degrees) was determined between the reference and …

Analyzing The Past Five Years Of Equinox Week* Programs Focused On Sustainable Development Goals Within A Collection Of Local And Global Initiatives To Support A Proposal For The Publication Of A Comprehensive Book, Abdoulaye Idrissa
Symposium of Student Scholars
Many undergraduate students are not familiar with the research process involved in a book publication proposal. Through this multidisciplinary collaborative research, the faculty intends to minimize this gap by engaging the students in such a process from the early phase of proposal preparation. The student will research and review the past five years of EQUINOX Week* programs focused on Sustainable Development Goals within a collection of local and global initiatives to support a proposal for the EQUINOX proceeding publication.
With an extensive set of qualitative and quantitative data gathered over a span of 5 years. The student will be …
The Migrant Crisis At The U.S. Southern Border, Matthew Ingber, Conner Muth, Nathanael Hall
The Migrant Crisis At The U.S. Southern Border, Matthew Ingber, Conner Muth, Nathanael Hall
Immigration Scholarship: History, Trends and Development in Global Immigration
The immigration policy of The United States of America is a divisive topic within American society. There is no doubt that this policy needs reform. This paper will investigate the ways in which The U.S. immigration policy at the Southern border negatively impacts those seeking asylum and will conclude with suggested policy changes that would potentially have the greatest positive impact on these individuals. Ever since 2016 media outlets have declared war on people crossing the southern border illegally. Media giants such as Fox News have repeatedly grouped those individuals within the same constructs as rapists, gang members, drug smugglers, …

The Investigator Research Magazine
Dear readers,
We are proud to present the spring issue of The Investigator and share with you the expansion of diverse research and scholarly activities occurring at Kennesaw State. Although this year was met with challenges, KSU’s research enterprise has thrived and grown.
In this issue, Pamela Whitten discussed the establishment of the Interdisciplinary Innovation Initiative, an internal funding program to spur new collaborations focused on KSU’s research themes. And alumni Carl Saint-Louis and Karen Armstrong, featured in our cover story, have returned as faculty to mentor the next generation.
This publication would not have been possible without the visual …

The Investigator Research Magazine
Dear readers,
We are proud to present the spring issue of The Investigator, giving you an inside look into the varied research and scholarly activities taking place at Kennesaw State.
In a new interview, President Pamela Whitten discusses KSU's growing research reputation and lessons learned from her own experiences as a researcher and mentor. Similarly, our cover story follows three First-Year Scholars as they explore the possibilities of research in Martin Hudson's lab through a new Office of Undergraduate Research initiative.
This publication would not have been possible without the contributions of the editorial team, including undergraduates Kaelyn Ireland, Geena …

The Investigator Research Magazine
We are excited to launch The Investigator, a new magazine which will be produced annually by the Office of Research at Kennesaw State University. You will find stories that span the spectrum and which impact the community through the research, service and creative activities conducted by KSU faculty, staff and students.
One feature describes how Jonathan McMurry and John Salerno partnered to create KSU’s first incubator company, New Echota Biotechnology. Another feature details the first year success of KSU Upward Bound programs, implemented in Polk and Paulding county high schools which help prepare students for college.
You will read how …

Automatic Identification Of Animals In The Wild: A Comparative Study Between C-Capsule Networks And Deep Convolutional Neural Networks., Joel Kamdem Teto, Ying Xie
Master of Science in Computer Science Theses
The evolution of machine learning and computer vision in technology has driven a lot of
improvements and innovation into several domains. We see it being applied for credit decisions, insurance quotes, malware detection, fraud detection, email composition, and any other area having enough information to allow the machine to learn patterns. Over the years the number of sensors, cameras, and cognitive pieces of equipment placed in the wilderness has been growing exponentially. However, the resources (human) to leverage these data into something meaningful are not improving at the same rate. For instance, a team of scientist volunteers took 8.4 years, …

Accidental Poison: Analysis Of 1,4-Butanediol In A Popular Children's Arts And Crafts Toy, Christopher R. Dockery, John H. Shugart, Jonathan D. Parker, William J. Lawson
Accidental Poison: Analysis Of 1,4-Butanediol In A Popular Children's Arts And Crafts Toy, Christopher R. Dockery, John H. Shugart, Jonathan D. Parker, William J. Lawson
Faculty and Research Publications
A popular children's arts and crafts toy made international headlines when it was discovered that 1,4-butanediol had been substituted into some of its formulations. The chemical 1,4-butanediol rapidly converts to the date-rape drug g-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) upon ingestion and resulted in the accidental poisoning of some children. In this experiment, students extract 1,4-butanediol from commercially available toy beads (or prepared simulations) using their knowledge of pharmaceutical chemistry, solubility, etc. Using case studies available in the literature, students develop a quantitative analysis experiment for 1,4-butanediol extracted from the toy beads and, through approximation, relate the extractable amount of 1,4-butanediol to dose-response …

The Occurrence Of False Positive Tests For Gunshot Residue Based On Simulations Of The Suspect's Occupation, Christopher R. Dockery, Matthew B. Rosenberg, Kimberly Kammerdiener, Lauren E. Mcadams
Faculty and Research Publications
Samples collected from high-risk occupations, or simulations thereof, are analyzed for elemental composition using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LlBS) to determine the occurrence of false positive gunshot residue results generated in the work environment. Previous work involving the study of lifetime of detectable amounts of gunshot residue on the hands of a suspect shooter found that gunshot residue exists up to 5.27 days after a firearm discharge. However, certain environmental and/or occupational false positive tests for gunshot residue could result when sampling non-shooters. Samples collected from occupations or simulations thereof include welding, pyrotechnics, key cutting, mechanics, and paper products all of …
