Zebrafish Feeding And Breeding: Adapting Best Practices For Zebrafish Husbandry, Abbigale Sullins Apr 2023

Zebrafish Feeding And Breeding: Adapting Best Practices For Zebrafish Husbandry, Abbigale Sullins

Scholars Day Conference

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) are a tropical, freshwater fish that serve as a key research model for human health and disease. The anatomical and genetic similarities shared by humans and zebrafish make establishing a zebrafish laboratory advantageous for undergraduate research and coursework. Zebrafish feeding protocols utilize two primary food types: dry (flake or pelleted) food and live prey such as artemia (brine shrimp) or rotifers. Adopting a feeding protocol that incorporates both dry and live feed optimizes considerations of nutrition and cost for maintaining healthy fish. Best practices for feeding were adapted from authoritative sources in the current literature and published …

Characterization Of Stream Quality Of Five Ouachita River Tributaries Utilizing Macrobenthic Species And Fish Populations, Hunter Jones, Brockton Brown May 2020

Characterization Of Stream Quality Of Five Ouachita River Tributaries Utilizing Macrobenthic Species And Fish Populations, Hunter Jones, Brockton Brown

Scholars Day Conference

The Ouachita River originates in west-central Arkansas and exits the state in south-central Arkansas near El Dorado. There are many tributaries that make up the Ouachita River through its Arkansas journey. Five of these tributaries are located in Clark County and were selected for this research. Basic in situ water quality parameters were measured and the riparian zone was characterized at each sample site. The five streams selected were Decieper/Little Deceiper Creek, Mill Creek, DeRoche Creek, Saline Bayou, and Tupelo Creek. Macrobenthic and fish surveys were conducted at two sites (upper and lower) on each creek except Saline Bayou and …

Studying The Effects Of Theraflu On The Growth Of Selenastrum Capricornutum, Hannah Gray Boren Jan 2015

Studying The Effects Of Theraflu On The Growth Of Selenastrum Capricornutum, Hannah Gray Boren

Honors Theses

Algae contribute to self-purification of streams and rivers and are necessary as food for fish and as components of aquatic food webs (1). However, too much or too little algae may create or be indicative of a problem. If nutrients are present in large amounts, algae growth may become excessive, resulting in algal “blooms.” These algal blooms can change the chemistry of the water, making it toxic to other aquatic occupants, including fish, birds, animals, and other plants (1). On the other hand, if nutrients in the water are limiting or are exhausted, algae growth is inhibited, which results in …

Dissolving The Conflict: Why The Church Should Be More Open To Evolution, Kyle Hargis Jan 2015

Dissolving The Conflict: Why The Church Should Be More Open To Evolution, Kyle Hargis

Honors Theses

Evolution can be very controversial, but I don't think that this needs to be the case. Having grown up in the south, in a Southern Baptist Church, I saw that evolution was always viewed as anti-theistic and treated like a trick from the devil. Many of the people that I went to church with believed that the world was only six thousand years old and would defend that opinion wholeheartedly, but my parents taught us that the world was very old. They were not strictly evolutionists but they believed that it very well could have happened if God chose to …

Extinct And Extirpated Birds And Mammals Of Arkansas, Nora Smith Jan 2008

Extinct And Extirpated Birds And Mammals Of Arkansas, Nora Smith

Honors Theses

Arkansas was purchased from France as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Parts of it were explored by the Dunbar and Hunter expedition in 1804-05. ln 1819, it was detached from the Missouri Territory and made a separate territory. By 1821, the capital moved to Little Rock, and on June 15, 1836, Arkansas became the 25th state of the United States of America. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission was established on March 11, 1915, and the first "real" law pertaining to game hunting was passed. The commission started to establish game refuges in 1929, and by 1960, it …

Adaptive Mechanisms For Aquatic Existence In Freshwater Turtles, Oscar Gloor Jan 1977

Adaptive Mechanisms For Aquatic Existence In Freshwater Turtles, Oscar Gloor

Honors Theses

Naturalists have often marveled at the ability of some air-breathing vertebrates to remain underwater for long periods of time (that is, "long" from man's reckoning). Seals, penguins, porpoises, and whales are all noted fro their ability to use oxygen stored in various ways to permit them to "stay under" for many minutes.

The return of vertebrates, which evolved on land, to an aquatic existence has been a much discussed subject from an evolutionary standpoint. That there are many advantages to life underwater is easily seen simply by the fact that, according to fossil records, terrestrial life arose from the sea. …
