Morphological And Ecological Remarks On Phrynopus Kauneorum (Amphibia, Anura, Leptodactylidae), Edgar Lehr, Cesar Aguilar, Jesus Cordova

Edgar Lehr

Phrynopus kauneorum was described as a medium-sized species with snout-vent length up to 32.3mm in females. Further adult female specimens of P. kauneorum, collected near the type locality (palma Pampa, Provincia Pachitea, Departamento Huanuco, Peru) show that it is a large species with a snout-vent length up to 56.4mm and the largest known species of the genus. P. kauneorum has an altitudinal distribution of 2 735-3 380m and is known from two localities in the yungas ecoregion of the eastern Andes of Peru. One adult female contained 56 eggs with an average diameter of 3.31±0.35mm (n=10). Osteological data of the …

On The Status Of The Serranid Fish Genus Epinephelus: Evidence For Paraphyly Based Upon 16s Rdna Sequence, Matthew T. Craig, Daniel Pondella Ii, Jens P.C Franckb, John C. Hafner

Daniel Pondella

Historically, attempts to elucidate evolutionary relationships among members of the genus Epinephelus (Teleostei: Serranidae), commonly known as groupers, have been hindered by the overwhelming number of species (98, sensu stricto), a pan global distribution, and the lack of morphological specializations traditionally used in ichthyological classification. To date, no comprehensive phylogenetic study, morphological or molecular, to evaluate the monophyly of this genus has been presented. In this study, previous hypotheses regarding the relationships among the American grouper species and the allied genera were evaluated by examination of mitochondrial DNA sequences of the 16S ribosomal DNA region. A 590-bp region of the …

Zur Kenntnis Von Psomophis Genimaculatus (Boettger, 1885) In Paraguay Under Besonderer Berücksichtigung Des Defensiv-Verhaltens, Edgar Lehr, Thomas Ziegler, Jakob Unger

Edgar Lehr

Little is known about the terrestrial colubrid Psomophis Genimaculatus (BOETTGER, 1885), which inhabits the plains of East Bolivia, Southwest Brasil, West Paraguay and North Argentina; so, for this small snake, treated long time as synonym of the species joberti, only few records exist for the Paraguayan Gran Chaco. In this short note we provide additional data on its morphology, habitat and ecology in the Chaco of Paraguay. Further, we focus on an interesting defensive behaviour of that species, namely to sting with its tail tip, which is also discussed in the background of traditional records.

A new species of hylid frog, genus Osteocephalus is described from the eastern Andean slopes of central Peru (Pozuzo, Departamento Pasco) between 780 and 1000 m above sea level. It differs from all other species in the genus by the following combination of characters: small size, smooth dorsum in males, bicoloured iris lacking radiating dark lines, but finely reticulate ventrally, light, pale nuptial pads not keratinized, and subgular vocal sac. Females of the new species are unknown.

Forest Dynamics In Flood Plain Forests In The Peruvian Amazon: Effects Of Disturbance And Implications For Management, Gustav Nebel, Lars Peter Kvist, Jerome K. Vanclay, Hector Vidaurre Dec 2000

Forest Dynamics In Flood Plain Forests In The Peruvian Amazon: Effects Of Disturbance And Implications For Management, Gustav Nebel, Lars Peter Kvist, Jerome K. Vanclay, Hector Vidaurre

Professor Jerome K Vanclay

Forest dynamics were studied from 1993 to 1997 for individuals > 10 cm DBH in nine 1 ha permanent sample plots. They were established in natural flood plain forests located on the lower Ucayali river in the Peruvian Amazon. After inventories of three plots in each of three forest types, a light and a heavy felling treatment were applied to each of the two plots, while a third plot was kept untreated. Average annual stem mortality and recruitment rates in the untreated plots were among the highest observed in neotropical rain forests: mortality 2.2-3.2% per year, recruitment 3.0-4.6% per year. Dead …

Keeping And First Breeding Record Of Bourret’S Box Turtle Cuora Galbinifrons Bourreti, Obst And Reimann, 1994, With Comments On Its Conservation Status, Edgar Lehr, Joachim Fiebig

Edgar Lehr

A group of Bourret's box turtles were obtained from the animal trade in central Vietnam in 1993. Although eggs were recorded in captivity since 1994, successful breeding was first achieved in 1998. Three clutches each containing one egg were laid between March and June 1998 and one clutch of two eggs was laid in 1999. The eggs had an average length of 55.4 mm and an average width of 30.0 mm. At a temperature of 24-30 °C the eggs hatched after an incubation period of 85-117 days. One hatchling incubated constantly under 27.5 °C left the egg after 97 days …

Use Of Thermal Water By The Andean Toad Bufo Spinulosus, Edgar Lehr, Emilio Fuentes, Gunther Kohler

Edgar Lehr

Tadpoles of the Andean toad Bufo spinulosus were found in warm water of a thermal spring in central Peru (Banos, 3460 m elev., Departamento Hmlnuco, Provincia Dos de Mayo). Adjacent water bodies of similar size but without connections to the thermal spring did not contain tadpoles. Water temperatures of the thermal and non-thermal water were measured and compared. 33,4 °C was the highest water temperature where a tadpole of Bufo spinulosus was observed.

Revision Of The Southeast Asian Leaf Turtle Genus Cyclemys Bell, 1834, With Description Of A New Species, Edgar Lehr, Uwe Fritz, Maren Gaulke

Edgar Lehr

Within the genus Cyclemys, four species are recognised and diagnosed, based upon more than 200 specimens. One is described as a new species. For the other three species, the nomenclatural history is discussed and several lecto- or neotypes are designated. In addition, a key for all species is presented. Cyclemys dentata (GRAY, 1831) sensu stricto is characterised by a reddish, intensely striped head and neck pattern and a predominant or entirely yellow plastron with a short interfemora1 and a long interanal seam. It is distributed from Thailand over the Malay peninsula to Sumatra and Java. Its range includes Borneo and …
