A Study On The Epipelic And Epilithic Algaeof Sana River (Trabzon/Turkey), Saadet Kolayli, Arif Baysal, Bülent Şahi̇n

The epipelic and epilithic algae of the Sana river, were investigated during the period January 1995 to December 1995. Sity taxa belonging to the Bacillariphyta, Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta and Euglenopnyta divisions were identified. Melosira varians Ag. (Coscinodiscaceae), Cocconeis placentula var. euglypta (Ehr.) Cleve (Achnanthaceae), Cymbella minuta Hilse ex Rabh. (Cymbellaceae), Navicula cryptocephala Kütz. and N. cryptocephala var. veneta Kütz. Grun. (Naviculaceae), were abundant among epipelic algae. Of the epilithic algae, it was observed that Concconeis placentula var. euglypta, Cymbella mi-nuta and Didymosphenia geminata (Lyng.) M. S. (Naviculaceae) were abundant.

The composition of the benthic algal communities and seasonal changes in the densities of the epipelic algae of Uzungöl Lake from April, 1991, to March, 1993, were studied. While the maximum density of the epipelic community was found to be 131111 cells/cm 2 at station I in April, 1991 the maximum density at station II in November, 1991, was 64581 cells/cm 2 . Bacillariophyta was dominant in the benthic algal population. The main epipelic diatoms were Amphora ovalis Kütz. (Cym-bellaceae), Ceratoneis arcus Kütz. Phenotypic plasticity was investigated in Commelina communis L. ( Commelinaceae), which is a perennial herb native to temperate Asia (China) and widely naturalised in the central and eastern Black Sea regions were investiguted C. communis has a relatively high ecological tolerance with respect to climatic and soil factors. It was found that the shoot length, leaf width, number of branches, dead leaves and flowers, root:shoot ratio, total -flower- and root biomasses, flower and root ni-trogen and RE 1 and RE 2 varied significantly in among the three populations. Sporobolus fertilis (Steud.) W.D. Clayton (Gramineae) , Physalis pubescens L. (Solanaceae) and Ambrosia elatior L. (Compositae ) are added to the flora of Turkey following the collection in August 1995 of three specimens from Northeast Anatolia where well-established populations now exist. They are housed at the Herbarium of the Faculty of Pharmacy of İstanbul University (nos. 69298, 69309, 69357). Observations on the alien plants of the cited area are appended.

The effects of Polystimuline K (PS-K), as a cytokinin analogue, on delayed light component state (DF), intermittent fluorescence (IF) and chlorophyll (Chl) a/b ratio was investigated in the leaves of different genotypes of cotton ( Gossypium hirsutum L.) under salt stress (155 mM Na Cl) for different periods of time. It was shown that in the early perioid of salt stress, DF and IF amplitudes are decreased, which is indicative of a Photosystem II (PS II) activity decrease. The relationship between loss of seed viability and the accumulation of chromosomal aberrations was investigated in both landraces and cultivars of the pea ( Pisum sativum L.). It was shown here, for the first time with pea landraces, that loss of seed viability is associated with an increase in the frequency of chromosomal abberrations, and that even small losses of viability result in some chromosomal damage in the seeds of pea landraces as well as in the seeds of pea cultivars. A. method is described for plant regeneration from unfertilized ovaries isolated from a diploid male sterile sugar beet ( Beta vulgaris L.) breeding line that was developed at the Sugar Institute, Ankara, Turkey. Ovary explants were cultured on Murashige & Skoog (MS) medium containing 2.0 mg/l benzylaminopurine (BAP). Two treatments were tested by incubating all of the explants in darkness for 15 days, and then transferring one half to light and keeping the other half in darkness throughout the culture. The Algae Flora Of Aksu Stream (Isparta -Turkey), Ö. Osman Ertan, Arzu Morkoyunlu

The algal flora at 4 stations chosen on Aksu Stream were investigated between September 1993 and August 1994. The flora consisted of 73 taxa belonging to the Bacillariophyta, Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta and Euglenophyta divisions. The species of Navicula Broy., Nitzschia Hassall, SurirellaTurpin, Amphora Ehr., Cymbella Agardh, Concconeis Ehr., Fragilaria Lyngbye and Synedra ulana (Nitz.) Ehr. were found to be widespread. Apart from members of Bacillariophyta, Oscillatoria limosa (Roth.). The interactive effects of vernalization, day length and light intensity on the number of leaves and flag leaf area on the main shoot of five bread wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars (Çukurova-86, Atay-85, Lancer, Haymana-79 and Bezostaya-1) each with different biological characters, were investigated. In this study, the vegetation mosaic is determined by aerial photography and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) techniques around the first center of tourism development in the Uludağ Mountain. The cover of plant communities and vegetation types is calculated in both absolute values (ha) and as percentage (%) of the total research area. Dwarf shrub communities ( Vaccinium myrtillus Juniperus communis, Juniperus communis and Astragalus angustifoliis comm.) are dominant with a cover of 53%. This study covers the investigation of the soil-plant relations of Vitex agnus-castus L. (Verbenaceae), a typical element of Mediteranean macchia vegetation. Soils collected from 38 different localitis in West Anatolia were analysed together with the V. agnus-castus plants from the same localities. This plant was observed to generally prefer loamy-textured, neutral and slightly alka-line soils, poor in calcium carbonate, containing varying amounts of organic matter, being rich or very rich in nitrogen, rich in phos-phorus and deficient in potassium. The Effects Of Different Sucrose, Agar And Ph Levels On In Vitro Shoot Production Of Almond ( Amygdalus Communis L.), Songül Gürel, Yücel Gülşen

In this study the possibilities of in vitro vegatitve propagation of almond ( Amygdalus communis L.) cv. Texas and cv. Nonpareil by shoot-tip culture were investigated. Different levels of sucrose, agar and pH were tested and shoot proliferation, shoot development and growth were observed during three successive stages, namely initiation, transplantation and multiplication. During the initiation stage, proliferation was achieved only with 5 and 6% sucrose and the best explant development occured with 0.5% agar and pH 5.5. Different levels of IBA (0.0, 0.1 and 0.5 mg/l) and BAP (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 mg/l) were tested by observing shoot development and growth during three successive stages, namely initiation, transplantation and multiplication. With the aim of developing an efficient plant regeneration system from cells or tissues of sunflower ( Helianthus annuus L.), we compared several regeneration protocols using different explant types and hormonal combinations. Somatic embryogenesis could be induced on cotyledon explants, especially from the basal (proximal) portion of the cotyledons, but genotypic vairation appeared to be the most critical factor for both somatic embryo and root production. Such a variation was more prominent when 10 different sunflower cultivars were compared for shoot production from shoot-tip explants. This paper gives the distribution of lichens in the Thrace region determined in this study and in nine previous studies as well. The genus Placidiopsis ( Verrucariaceae) is recorded for the first time in Turkey and thirty-three of the species are recorded for the first time for the region. With the completion of this study, the number of known lichen species in the region reaches 201.

Liverworts ( Marchantiopsida) Of The Altindere Valley National Park, İsa Gökler

This investigation covers studies undertaken on the liverworts of the Altındere Valley National Park, including the historical Sumela Meryemana Monastery located in the town of Maçka, province of Trabzon. As a result, 33 species belonging to 16 families of the class Marchantiopsida (Hepaticae) of the division Bryophyta have been identified. Of these, Porella arboris-vitae (With.) Grolle, P. cordaeana (Hüb.) Moore, P. obtusata (Tayl.) Trev. and Lejeunea lamacerina (Steph.) Schiffn. are reported for the first time from the A4 square of Turkey.

This study comprises new chorological data of 54 Bulgarian vascular plants. The occurrence of Glyceria nemoralis (Uechtr.) Uechtr. & Koern. in Bulgaria is confirmed. Thirty-four taxa are new for the Bulgarian region of Mt. Strandzha. The occurrence of 20 species in the Bulgarian region of Mt. Strandzha is confirmed. In addition, the distribution of Knautia degenii Borbás ex Form. in Bulgaria is briefly discussed.

The genus Rhus L. ( Anacardiacece) has some 150 species all over the world and is represented by Rhus coriaria L. in Turkey. In this study, the anatomy of the cortex of this species was investigated. Anatomical study of the branch cortex revealed taht large secretory canals containing essential oil occur in one row around the cortex. These canals are supported by a group of sclerenchyma cells. These characteristic elements were inllustrated.
