A Literary And Field Guide To The Trees In Willa Cather’S Nebraska Novels, Linnea M. Fredrickson May 2002

A Literary And Field Guide To The Trees In Willa Cather’S Nebraska Novels, Linnea M. Fredrickson

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

Willa Cather, one of America’s foremost novelists and short-story writers, was deeply interested in and profoundly affected by the places she lived and encountered. One small aspect of her knowledge of places was familiarity with the trees of the locale. A number of influences during her youth gave her the gift of tree awareness: a great-grandfather who was a forest conservationist, a home in the northern Virginia mixed-deciduous forest that was named for its prominent trees, perhaps the sound of her own first name, the wrenching contrast of a move to the nearly treeless mixed-grass prairie of Nebraska when she …

The Biological Activity Of Phytotoxic Extracts From Corynebacterium Sepedonicum, Doran W. Pearson Jan 1971

The Biological Activity Of Phytotoxic Extracts From Corynebacterium Sepedonicum, Doran W. Pearson

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

Isolation of a phytotoxin from the ring rot pathogen of potatoes, Corynebacterium sepedonicum, had previously been reported by Strobel (21). The first phase in our study was to investigate more extensively the general nature of this compound. The phytotoxin could possibly be a specific compound associated only with the ring rot pathogen. However, the possibility that the substance could be obtained from sources other than the bacterium had not been completely eliminated. In an attempt to answer this question, three extracts were purified and compared. First, compounds were isolated from a broth culture of bacteria in the manner described …

Northern Corn Leaf Blight (Helminthosporium Turcicum Pass.) On Susceptible And Resistant Corn, Saffet Baydar Jan 1968

Northern Corn Leaf Blight (Helminthosporium Turcicum Pass.) On Susceptible And Resistant Corn, Saffet Baydar

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

The objectives of the research reported herein were to (1) become familiar with the technique of inoculating corn with Helminthosporium turcicum, (2) become familiar with a technique of evaluating the susceptibility of corn lines to H. turcicum, (3) become familiar with plant reaction and organism development in the various types of corn and (4) evaluate Turkish corn susceptibility in relation to various types of germ plasm in American corn lines in order to assist in combating the serious disease of Northern corn left blight in Turkey.

Comparative reactions of 10 Turkish, 5 multigenic resistant, 2 heterozygous monogenic …

The Effects Of Plant Virus Purification Procedures On Extracts Of Healthy Plants, Sue Ann Tolin Aug 1962

The Effects Of Plant Virus Purification Procedures On Extracts Of Healthy Plants, Sue Ann Tolin

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

This study was undertaken to devise an easy, accurate method to detect and separate various components in extracts of healthy bean, tobacco, and barley plants by using techniques common to virus purification and to determine the effect of some of the more common denaturing and adsorbing agents on these healthy plant components.Conditions for density-gradient centrifugation were selected to give the best separation of normal components, and these conditions were then used as the basis of an analytical method to evaluate the denaturation procedures.

Protoplasmic components of healthy bean, tobacco, and barley plants were isolated and studied by use of techniques …
