In this study, the pollen morphology of all Scaligeria DC. species distributed in Turkey were studied with light and scanning electron microscopy for the first time. The aim is to contribute to knowledge of the variation among seven Scaligeria species, which have taxonomic problems, based on pollen morphological characteristics by population analysis. The pollen is radially symmetrical, isopolar, and tricolporate in all examined species. Pollen grains are prolate and subprolate with the polar axes ranging from 18.4 to 37 μm and the equatorial axes from 9.8 to 30 μm. New Contributions To The Turkish Ascomycota, Abdullah Kaya, Yasi̇n Uzun

Turkish Journal of Botany

Nine discomycete and one sordariomycete (Ascomycota) species are reported for the first time from Turkey. The genera Coccomyces, Kompsoscypha, Pseudopithyella, Strobiloscypha, and Lasiosphaeris have not been reported before in the country. Anthracobia, Plicaria, Sclerotinia, and Pithya species are new records added to the previous knowledge. Macro- and micromorphological descriptions and illustrations for each new taxon are provided.

Origanum ayliniae Dirmenci & Yazıcı, which differs significantly from O. dictamnus L., is described for the first time in this paper. In addition, a new hybrid, O. x adae Dirmenci & Yazıcı, between O. ayliniae and O. sipyleum L., is described and investigated in detail. The general morphology, pollen structure, chromosome features, and nuclear (ITS) and chloroplast (rpl32) genomes of collected specimens were studied. O. x adae was determined to have some intermediate properties morphologically and palynologically that place it between the parents. The diatoms are one of the most important groups of organisms for biomonitoring studies. In Turkey, most previous applications of diatoms to water quality monitoring have focused on the pennate diatoms, with almost no attention given to the centric forms. The paper presents the centric diatoms in some river catchments in Central Anatolia (Konya closed catchment and Kızılırmak) and Western Anatolia (Marmara, Sakarya, Susurluk, Akarçay, Küçük Menderes, and Meriç-Ergene in the Marmara and Aegean regions). Cyperus noeanus Boiss. is known only from the type specimen that was collected in Central Anatolia by Wilhelm Noë. It is considered an endemic species in Turkey. A detailed morphological study of the type specimen and comparison with similar related species in section Compressi Kunth demonstrated that the morphological characters of C. noeanus entirely fall within the range of characters of C. glaber L., which is a widely scattered species in Turkey, and widespread in S Europe and SW Asia as well. This study is an overview of the importance of soil nutrients for the maintenance of Vuralia turcica, which is an endemic in Turkey due to its natural habitats. Electrical conductivity, pH, and mineral element content (macroelements: nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and sodium, and microelements: boron, cadmium, copper, iron, manganese, nickel, lead, and zinc) were analyzed in 21 soil samples taken at 30?60 m depth at 21 points from 8 different locations where V. turcica was growing to determine nutrient content, which is important for soil fertility and controls the crop yield. Volumetric Analysis Of Airborne Pollen Grains In The City Of Uşak, Turkey, Ulaş Uğuz, Aykut Güvensen, Nedret Şengonca Tort, Ayli̇n Eşi̇z Dereboylu, Peli̇n Baran

Airborne pollen in Uşak, a province in Turkey, was studied for two years (from 1 February 2014 to 31 January 2016) using the volumetric method and the most recent pollen data of the region were obtained. During the study, 23,915 pollen grains were detected. The pollens detected belonged to 53 taxa. Of the 53 taxa, 28 were woody and 25 were herbaceous. Of the pollen grains detected, 86% (20,565 pollen grains) were from woody plants, 4.74% (1133 pollen grains) belonged to Poaceae, and 8.65% (2071 pollen grains) were from other herbaceous plants, whereas 0.61% (146 pollen grains) were unidentified pollen …

Seed Structure And Its Taxonomic Implications For Genus Thlaspi Sensu Lato Sectionsnomisma, Thlaspi, And Pterotropis (Brassicaceae), Mehmet Cengi̇z Karai̇smai̇loğlu, Osman Erol

We studied morphological and anatomical characteristics of seeds of 22 taxa in the sections Nomisma, Thlaspi, and Pterotropis of Thlaspi sensu lato from Turkey and the significance of these characters in a taxonomical context. The results show that the taxa differ from each other in terms of seed shape and color. The seed size ranges from 1.25 mm to 2.99 mm in length and from 0.66 mm to 2.16 mm in width, Thlaspi rosulare and T. tatianae having the largest and T. annuum having the smallest seeds. Ekimia ozcan-secmenii Şenol & Eroğlu sp. nov. (Apiaceae) is described from SW Turkey. E. ozcan-secmenii differs from its close affinity, E. bornmuelleri, by life form (monocarpic), petal and bracteole morphology, and mericarp features. These data were more supported by the results of nrDNA ITS sequences. Scilla bilgineri Yıldırım (Asparagaceae) is described here as a new species. Diagnostic morphological characters, a full description, and detailed illustrations are provided on the basis of the type specimens and observations of wild populations. The new species is characterized by whitish to very pale lilac tepals, variegated ovary; style 5-6 mm long; oblong, straw to pale yellow and cucullate seed; pale creamy-white elaiosome, which is adherent to the testa; and pinkish to reddish, fleshy bulb scales. The paper deals with the classification of plant communities that appear along postfire succession of Pinus brutia forests (Turkish red pine). The research took place in the Antalya region in the southern part of Turkey. Samplings were performed in nine areas, with different periods after fire: 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 12, 20, 40 years, and a mature forest with an estimated age of 60 years. A New Bryophyte Community And Three New Records For The Epiphytic Bryophyte Vegetation Of Turkey, Mevlüt Alataş, Güray Uyar

Based on 38 relevés, the Lewinskyetum affinis ass. nov. (Ulotion crispae alliance) was described and characterized as a new epiphytic association from the Abant Mountains (Northwest Turkey). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report about three epiphytic bryophyte associations, namely Dicranetum taurici, Pterigynandretum filiformis, and Orthotricho straminei-Pterigynandretum filiformis, in Turkey. In addition, multivariate analysis techniques such as two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN) and detrended correspondence analysis (DECORANA) were used to examine epiphytic bryophyte communities for cluster analysis and ordination analysis, respectively.

A new species, Cirsium bozkirensis H.Duman, Dirmenci & Tugay (Asteraceae), Cirsium sect. Epitrachys DC, is described from Konya Province, South Anatolia, Turkey. Diagnostic and morphological characteristics that distinguish it from allied species C. cephalotes Boiss. and C. pugnax Sommier & Levier. are provided. A description, distribution map, and taxonomic comments on the new species and allied species are given. Dianthus ucarii Hamzaoğlu & Koç (Caryophyllaceae) is described as a new species to science based on material collected in Kırklareli Province in northwestern Turkey. The new taxon belongs to sect. Carthusiani (Boiss.) F.N.Williams and it is closely related to Dianthus pinifolius Sm., an Eastern Mediterranean element. A description, illustration, and identification key for the new species are given. In addition, D. ucarii and D. pinifolius are compared in terms of general morphology and molecular phylogeny.

The present study was carried out on macrofungi samples collected from Bingöl Province between 2006 and 2010. As a result of field and laboratory investigations 112 species belonging to Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were determined. Ten of them are new records for the Turkish mycobiota: Orbilia auricolor (A. Bloxam) Sacc.; Orbilia luteorubella (Nyl.) P. Karst.; Mollisia lividofusca (Fr.) Gillet; Calycina languida (P. Karst.) Baral, R. Galán & G. Platas; Vibrissea filisporia (Bonord.) Korf & A. A description, taxonomic note, distribution map, habitat, and nrDNA ITS and cpDNA trnL-F based phylogeny are presented. A detailed micromorphological analysis of the labellum was carried out using both light and scanning electron microscopy on 14 genera (Anacamptis, Cephalanthera, Coeloglossum, Dactylorhiza, Gymnadenia, Himantoglossum, Limodorum, Neottia, Orchis, Ophrys, Platanthera, Serapias, Spiranthes, and Steveniella) of Orchidaceae in Turkey. In the samples, various epidermal features were identified in the spur that developmentally are invaginations of the labellum and the adaxial surface of the labellum. Typical secretory cells and inclusions such as starch or calcium oxalate crystals of different sizes and shapes were found within the structure of individuals. Benthic algal flora of Karagöl Lake, its seasonal variation, and the physical and chemical parameters of the water were studied between October 2008 and September 2010. The algal flora consisted of 112 taxa belonging to the divisions Charophyta (41), Chlorophyta (33), Cyanobacteria (18), Euglenozoa (17), Miozoa (2), and Ochrophyta (1). Six desmid taxa found in this research are new records for the freshwater algal flora of Turkey. The qualitative dominance of benthic taxa typical of slightly alkaline and mesotrophic ecosystems was observed. The long-neglected lichen described as Cladonia trapezuntica was rediscovered at its type locality in Turkey thanks to historical maps available at the Natural History Museum in Vienna. Molecular, morphological, and chemical analyses were applied to determine whether C. Trapezuntica is a distinct species or rather falls within the phenotypic variation of Pycnothelia papillaria. Matthiola W.T.Aiton is a taxonomically complex genus in which there are many problems, mostly with Matthiola longipetala and M. Odoratissima. Matthiola species native to Turkey were collected from various locations in Anatolia, and their DNA was isolated. Revision studies performed on the basis of molecular data obtained from studies conducted in recent years have made the phylogenetic relationships and systematic positions of the taxa more apparent and reliable. Dichoropetalum alanyensis Bilgili, Sağıroğlu and H.Duman, a new species from South Anatolia in Turkey (Antalya-Alanya), is described and illustrated. It is closely related to D. Chryseum (Boiss. And Heldr. Ex Boiss.) Pimenov and Kljuykov, from which it differs mainly by its habit, basal leaves and lobes, and mericarp features. Diagnostic morphological characters are discussed. Notes are also given on its ecology and conservation status, together with scanning electron micrographs of mericarp surface sculpturing pattern. ITS sequences were used for DNA fingerprinting. In this study, the phytosociological structure of floodplain forests in the Euxine region of Turkey was examined from a large-scale perspective. For this goal, all of the published relevés were analyzed using the numerical classification and ordination techniques, which are widely used in phytosociological studies all over the world. In this study, the achene surfaces of 31 taxa belonging to the genus Centaurea L. Were examined in detail by means of electron microscopy. The main aim of this study was to characterize the microsculpture of the achene surface of the Turkish species of Centaurea sect. Acrolophus (Cass.) DC. (Asteraceae). Detailed descriptions of the achene surface were given for each taxon and a fruitful dendrogram was established by numerical analyses derived from the determined micromorphological features. Onosma malatyana Binzet is described and illustrated as a new species from Malatya and Tunceli provinces in eastern Anatolia, Turkey. The new species belongs to sect. Onosma L. Subsect. Asterotricha (Boiss.) Gürke. And is closely similar to O. Auriculata DC. And O. Gigantea Lam. Diagnostic morphological and palynological characters of these species are compared and discussed. The new species distinctly differs from the similar two species by its patent setose and short hair of stem indumentum; 60-85 × 20-40 mm, oblanceolate-obovate basal leaves; hairy corolla; and having 4.5 × 4 mm, obtuse-acuminate nutlets with ventral keel and horizontally incurved beak. …

New Macrofungi Records From Turkey And Macrofungal Diversity Of Pozantı-Adana, Hasan Hüseyi̇n Doğan, Fevzi̇ Kurt

The present study reports on macrofungi species collected from 2003 to 2012 in Pozantı. In the field and during laboratory studies, 157 taxa belonging to 2 divisions and 51 families were identified. Among them, 8 families and 12 taxa belong to Ascomycota, and 43 families and 145 taxa belong to Basidiomycota. Moreover, 10 taxa"Dumontinia tuberosa, Lycoperdon lambinonii, Conocybe mesospora, Pholiotina striipes, Hebeloma sordidum, Antrodia ramentacea, Leucogyrophana romellii, Diplomitoporus flavescens, Alutaceodontia alutacea, and Tulasnella violea"were found in the Turkish mycobiota for the first time.
