Allocation Tradeoffs Among Chaparral Shrub Seedlings With Different Life History Types (Rhamnaceae), R. Pratt, A. Jacobsen, J. Hernandez, F. Ewers, Gretchen North, S. Davis

Gretchen North

• Premise of the Study: California chaparral shrub species have different life history types: Nonsprouters (NS) are killed by fi re and persist through a fi re-stimulated seed bank; facultative sprouters (FS) reestablish by a combination of vegetative sprouting and seeding; and obligate sprouters (OS) reestablish exclusively by sprouting. Nonsprouters and FS establish seedlings in opencanopy postfi re environments, whereas OS establish seedlings between fi res in the shady understory. We hypothesized that allocation differences among seedlings of postfi re sprouters and nonsprouters and regeneration niche differences would lead to contrasting patterns in biomass accumulation (NS > FS > OS, in sun; …

A Zwitterionic Squaraine Dye With A Large Stokes Shift For In Vivo And Site-Selective Protein Sensing, Yongqian Xu, Qin Liu, Xiaopeng Li, Chrys Wesdemiotis, Yi Pang Dec 2011

A Zwitterionic Squaraine Dye With A Large Stokes Shift For In Vivo And Site-Selective Protein Sensing, Yongqian Xu, Qin Liu, Xiaopeng Li, Chrys Wesdemiotis, Yi Pang

Qin Liu

A novel squaraine dye (SQ) exhibits improved fluorescence response toward protein detection by incorporation of a zwitterionic structure. With the aid of a dansylamide (DNSA) substituent, the new probe (DNSA-SQ) exhibits remarkable selectivity in binding to site I (a specific substructure in protein).

Inheritance Of Humeral Spotting In The Croaking Gourami (Osphronemidae: Trichopsis Vittatus), Jack Frankel, Lisa Alder-Golden, Andre Porter Dec 2011

Inheritance Of Humeral Spotting In The Croaking Gourami (Osphronemidae: Trichopsis Vittatus), Jack Frankel, Lisa Alder-Golden, Andre Porter

Jack Frankel

The croaking gourami (Trichopsis vittatus) exhibits two phenotypes associated with humeral spotting. Fish possess a prominent, dark humeral patch or spot located behind the operculum or lack this spotting pattern. Segregation patterns observed from the progenies of eleven different crosses support the hypothesis that the inheritance of humeral spotting in T. vittatus is controlled by the action of a single autosomal locus, with complete dominance of the allele controlling the spotted phenotype.

The Mc159 Protein From The Molluscum Contagiosum Poxvirus Inhibits Nf-Kb Activation By Interacting With The Ikb Kinase Complex, Crystal Randall Dec 2011

The Mc159 Protein From The Molluscum Contagiosum Poxvirus Inhibits Nf-Kb Activation By Interacting With The Ikb Kinase Complex, Crystal Randall

Crystal Randall

Molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV) causes persistent neoplasms in healthy and immunocompromised people. Its ability to persist likely is due to its arsenal of viral immunoevasion proteins. For example, the MCV MC159 protein inhibits TNF-R1 induced NF-kB activation and apoptosis. The MC159 protein is a viral FLIP and, as such, possesses two tandem death effector domains (DEDs). We show in this article that, in human embryonic kidney 293 T cells, the expression of wild-type MC159 or a mutant MC159 protein containing the first DED (MC159 A) inhibited TNF-induced NF-kB, or NF-kB activated by PMA or …

The Role Of Tooth Enamel Mechanical Properties In Primate Dietary Adaptation, Paul J. Constantino, James Jw Lee, Yvonne Gerbig, Adam Hartstone-Rose, Mauricio Talebi, Brian Lawn, Peter Lucas Dec 2011

The Role Of Tooth Enamel Mechanical Properties In Primate Dietary Adaptation, Paul J. Constantino, James Jw Lee, Yvonne Gerbig, Adam Hartstone-Rose, Mauricio Talebi, Brian Lawn, Peter Lucas

Paul J. Constantino

Primate teeth adapt to the physical properties of foods in a variety of ways including changes in occlusal morphology, enamel thickness, and overall size. We conducted a comparative study of extant primates to examine whether their teeth also adapt to foods through variation in the mechanical properties of the enamel. Nanoindentation techniques were used to map profiles of elastic modulus and hardness across tooth sections from the enamel-dentin junction to the outer enamel surface in a broad sample of primates including apes, Old World monkeys, New World monkeys, and lemurs. The measured data profiles feature considerable overlap among species, indicating …

The Exclusion Of Black Women From National Leadership Positions In The United States: Taxation With Limited Representation, Amadu Jacky Kaba Dec 2011

The Exclusion Of Black Women From National Leadership Positions In The United States: Taxation With Limited Representation, Amadu Jacky Kaba

Amadu Jacky Kaba

This article claims that the United States is progressing well when examined through the racial and cultural diversity of its young people aged 29 and younger with earned doctorates. The data show that females in general and Asian and Black females in particular are earning very high proportions of doctorate degrees among individuals aged 29 and younger in 2009 and 2008. For example, of the 117,000 doctorate degrees (Ph.D., Ed.D., etc.) held by individuals in the US aged 25 - 29 in 2009, females accounted for 65,000 (55.6%), with Black females and Asian females accounting for 11.1% (13,000) and 10.3% …

Xuemin (Sam) Wang

Direct infusion electrospray ionization triple quadrupole precursor scanning for three oxidized fatty acyl anions revealed 86 mass spectral peaks representing polar membrane lipids in extracts from Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) infected with Pseudomonas syringae pv tomato DC3000 expressing AvrRpt2 (PstAvr). Quadrupole time-of-flight and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry provided evidence for the presence of membrane lipids containing one or more oxidized acyl chains. The membrane lipids included molecular species of phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, digalactosyldiacylglycerol, monogalactosyldiacylglycerol, and acylated monogalactosyldiacylglycerol. The oxidized chains were identified at the level of chemical formula and included C(18)H(27)O(3) (abbreviated 18:4-O, to indicate four double bond …
