Allocation Tradeoffs Among Chaparral Shrub Seedlings With Different Life History Types (Rhamnaceae), R. Pratt, A. Jacobsen, J. Hernandez, F. Ewers, Gretchen North, S. Davis

• Premise of the Study: California chaparral shrub species have different life history types: Nonsprouters (NS) are killed by fi re and persist through a fi re-stimulated seed bank; facultative sprouters (FS) reestablish by a combination of vegetative sprouting and seeding; and obligate sprouters (OS) reestablish exclusively by sprouting. Nonsprouters and FS establish seedlings in opencanopy postfi re environments, whereas OS establish seedlings between fi res in the shady understory. We hypothesized that allocation differences among seedlings of postfi re sprouters and nonsprouters and regeneration niche differences would lead to contrasting patterns in biomass accumulation (NS > FS > OS, in sun; …

A novel squaraine dye (SQ) exhibits improved fluorescence response toward protein detection by incorporation of a zwitterionic structure. With the aid of a dansylamide (DNSA) substituent, the new probe (DNSA-SQ) exhibits remarkable selectivity in binding to site I (a specific substructure in protein).

Primate teeth adapt to the physical properties of foods in a variety of ways including changes in occlusal morphology, enamel thickness, and overall size. We conducted a comparative study of extant primates to examine whether their teeth also adapt to foods through variation in the mechanical properties of the enamel. Nanoindentation techniques were used to map profiles of elastic modulus and hardness across tooth sections from the enamel-dentin junction to the outer enamel surface in a broad sample of primates including apes, Old World monkeys, New World monkeys, and lemurs. The measured data profiles feature considerable overlap among species, indicating …

This article claims that the United States is progressing well when examined through the racial and cultural diversity of its young people aged 29 and younger with earned doctorates. The data show that females in general and Asian and Black females in particular are earning very high proportions of doctorate degrees among individuals aged 29 and younger in 2009 and 2008. For example, of the 117,000 doctorate degrees (Ph.D., Ed.D., etc.) held by individuals in the US aged 25 - 29 in 2009, females accounted for 65,000 (55.6%), with Black females and Asian females accounting for 11.1% (13,000) and 10.3% …
