The rock lobster processing industry in Western Australia has a long history of management. Whilst management of the industry through the Fisheries Department has obviously been successful in helping to build the rock lobster industry into one of the State's major export industries, this approach is not without problems. Extensive description of the Virginia oyster resource and history of its utilization has been given by Haven, Hargis and Kendall (1981), and more recently reviewed by Hargis and Haven (1988). These contributions, among many others, describe a state of continuing decline. The James River, Virginia has served as the focal point for the Virginia oyster industry for over a century, being the source of the majority of seed oysters that were transplanted for grow-out to locations within the Virginia portion of the Chesapeake Bay and much further afield in the Middle Atlantic states (Haven et al, 1981 ). Haplosporidium nelsoni is a protistan pathogen of the eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica, and has contributed to the decline of the oyster population in the Chesapeake Bay. From comparison of the sequence data of the 16S-like rDNA of H. nelsoni with those of Minchinia teredinis and other related organisms, 2 oligonucleotides which were specific to H. nelsoni and suitable for use as PCR primers were identified. These primers amplified a 564 base pair fragment of the small subunit (SSU) rRNA gene of H. nelsoni, but did not amplify genomic oyster DNA or the SSU rRNA genes of the haplosporidians Haplosporidium costale, …

For the 1993/94 western rock lobster fishing season several new management strategies were introduced. The objective of the changes to the management package was to protect the rock lobster fishery. It was also to provide sufficient breeding stock to ensure viability of the industry. The most significant new measure was a temporary (two seasons) 18 percent pot reduction. Other changes were also made. There were considered sound reasons for reviewing and changing the previous management package. Despite this, some fishermen were critical of the new management package, and claimed that it unfairly disadvantaged smaller operators. Against this background, the Department …

Annual indices of juvenile abundance have been generated from trawl survey data for several species of key recreational importance in the Virginia portion of Chesapeake Bay (spot, croaker, weakfish, summer flounder, black sea bass and striped bass, white and channel catfish) and four species of secondary importance (scup, white perch, northern puffer, and silver perch) for the period 1988-1995. No species has shown a continuous trend during the seven year period, although several species have revealed declines (spot, scup y-o-y white perch, northern puffer) or increases (Atlantic croaker and striped bass) in recent years. The purpose of this management plan is to regulate fishing for rock lobsters (Family Palimuridae) in waters off the west coast of Western Australia such that the breeding stock of rock lobsters is maintained at a level known to have generated adequate recruitment of young lobsters in the past. This management plan does not constitute a change in the management arrangements for the rock lobster fishery. This paper was originally prepared for the first National Fisheries Managers Conference in 1993. It is now updated and includes the current bag and size limits from around Australia as at 1 July, 1995. It is fairly obvious from this paper that there is a need for more cooperation between the states, particularly for species which have wide distributions. However, regional solutions can be a good approach for specific management needs, while general rules can be made more consistent in a number of cases.

The Recreational Fishing Advisory Committee (RFAC) approved holding this translocation seminar to air the translocation of fish for recreational enhancement in a public forum. This forum will identify issues including establishing common ground between the variety of interest groups which are represented. Contentious areas which require further investigation and consultation should become apparent, and assist the formulation of appropriate policies on translocation for Western Australia.

The determinants of demand for charter boat fishing were examined using a travel cost demand model. Catch rate, trip costs, fishing experience, and income significantly affect charter boat fishing. Thus, the improvement of catch rate and trip costs could be a desirable policy for the charter boat industry in Taiwan.

The susceptibility of the eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica to infection by the protozoan parasite Perkinsus marinus is influenced by temperature. Because of the crucial roles of heat shock proteins in cellular thermal tolerance and in host-parasite adaptations in other species, we compared the in vitro heat shock responses of cultured P. marin us and of oyster hemocytes. The parasite and host heat shock proteins were different in size and in immunochemical specificity. In addition, the thermal threshold for inducing the response was higher for P. marinus acclimated to the same temperature as the oysters. The results suggest that EI marinus …

Hypersaline lakes are noted for their simple communities which facilitate understanding ecological interactions (Williams et al. 1990; Wurtsbaugh 1992; Jellison and Melack 1988). Nevertheless, we still cannot easily predict how environmental changes will effect the population dynamics in these lakes, at least in part because even these simple ecosystems may be more complex than we .realize. Many hypersaline lakes are dominated by the brine shrimp Artemia spp. The production of brine shrimp is often very high because the terminal, saline lakes accumulate nutrients that make them rich, and because the short food chains in them (nutrients-->phytoplankton-->brine shrimp) minim …

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) has conducted a trawl survey dating back to 1955. Over these forty years methods and objectives have varied according to funding sources and state and/or federal mandates. The present thrust of the program is to provide juvenile indices of relative abundance for recreationally, commercially, and ecologically important finfish and invertebrates. These measures of juvenile abundance are widely used as a key element in the management of the Atlantic States' coastal fishery resources.
