Oyster Spatfall On Shellstrings In Virginia Rivers: 1975 Annual Summary, Dexter S. Haven, Paul C. Kendall Jan 1976

Oyster Spatfall On Shellstrings In Virginia Rivers: 1975 Annual Summary, Dexter S. Haven, Paul C. Kendall

Reports

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) conducts weekly surveys from June through early October to obtain oyster spatfall information. Spat counts are made from oyster shells strung on wire and · suspended from stakes on public and private beds. The number of spat on shells are counted each week of the spawning season to determine the potential of a particular area for receiving a strike and to predict the most likely period the strikes will occur. Shells .planted just before the period of maximum set have the best chance of getting a good strike.

The Shellfish Fisheries Of The Potomac River, Dexter S. Haven Jan 1976

The Shellfish Fisheries Of The Potomac River, Dexter S. Haven

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

The Potomac and its tributaries support many species of molluscs which are important sources of food for benthic invertebrates, fish, and waterfowl. However, only two species, the American oyster Crassostrea virginica and the soft clam Mya arenaria are harvested for commercial purposes. A third species, the brackish water clam Rangia cuneata occurs locally in tremendous concentrations, but it is not utilized as a food source. Nevertheless, this species is regarded as a potential source of food for people.

During the past six to eight years, commercial landings of both the oyster and the soft clam have dropped from high to …

Food Habits Of The Steelcolor Shiner, Notropis Whipplei (Girard), Mark A. Dyer Jan 1976

Food Habits Of The Steelcolor Shiner, Notropis Whipplei (Girard), Mark A. Dyer

Masters Theses

Specimens of the steelcolor shiner, Notropis whipplei (Girard) were seined at irregular intervals from Polecat Creek (Coles County, Illinois) from October 1974 to September 1975. Drift and benthic samples were taken in conjunction with fish collections. The stomach contents of the fish were analyzed and compared to organisms found in the drift and benthos. More food taxa were represented in the fish collected during the summer. Aquatic insect forms, primarily chironomid larvae, amounted to 75.6% of the total percentage of foods eaten during the winter as compared to 18.8% for the summer. Adult insects, mainly coleopterans and dipterans, were the …
