A Survey In The Lafayette River For Oysters, Clams, And Shell In The Vicinity Of The Proposed Granby Street Bridge., Dexter S. Haven, James P. Whitcomb, Paul C. Kendall

Reports

The purposes of this study are: 1) to survey populations of oysters, clams, and shells in the immediate vicinity of the site of the proposed Granby Street Bridge in the Lafayette River, Virginia; .2) to evaluate the present and future potential of the area for shellfish culture; and, 3) to estimate the value of the existing stocks of shellfish.

Dermocystidium-Marinum Infection In Oysters, Frank O. Perkins Jan 1976

Dermocystidium-Marinum Infection In Oysters, Frank O. Perkins

VIMS Articles

A review of knowledge concerning the life cycle, structure, taxonomy, and pathology of Dermocystidium marinum is presented. The pathogen causes mortalities of the American oyster, Crassostrea virginica, along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States.

A Mathematical Approach To Depuration, Bruce J. Neilson Jan 1976

A Mathematical Approach To Depuration, Bruce J. Neilson

VIMS Articles

Two equations can be written to describe the change in bacterial concentrations in the shellfish and the water in depuration units. Analytical solutions of these equations for special conditions and numerical solutions for general conditions indicate that there will always be an initial, rapid decrease in bacteria in the oysters during depuration. With suitable flow rates and loading rates, the die off will be exponential and several orders of magnitude reduction can be achieved within 72 hours. Both very low flow rates and very low loading rates increase the residence time of water in the tank, and therefore depuration will …

Occurrence Of Hematopoietic Neoplasms In Virginia Oysters (Crassostrea-Virginica), Em Frierman

VIMS Articles

The three predominant pathogens of oysters in Virginia are the haplosporidans Minchinia costalis and M. nelsoni and the protist Dermocystidium marinum (Wood and Andrews, 1962; Haskin, Stauber, and Mackin, 1966; Mackin, Owen, and Collier, 1950).

Oyster Spatfall On Shellstrings In Virginia Rivers: 1975 Annual Summary, Dexter S. Haven, Paul C. Kendall Jan 1976

Oyster Spatfall On Shellstrings In Virginia Rivers: 1975 Annual Summary, Dexter S. Haven, Paul C. Kendall

Reports

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) conducts weekly surveys from June through early October to obtain oyster spatfall information. Spat counts are made from oyster shells strung on wire and · suspended from stakes on public and private beds. The number of spat on shells are counted each week of the spawning season to determine the potential of a particular area for receiving a strike and to predict the most likely period the strikes will occur. Shells .planted just before the period of maximum set have the best chance of getting a good strike.
