Dermocystidium-Marinum Infection In Oysters, Frank O. Perkins Jan 1976

Dermocystidium-Marinum Infection In Oysters, Frank O. Perkins

VIMS Articles

A review of knowledge concerning the life cycle, structure, taxonomy, and pathology of Dermocystidium marinum is presented. The pathogen causes mortalities of the American oyster, Crassostrea virginica, along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States.

A Mathematical Approach To Depuration, Bruce J. Neilson Jan 1976

A Mathematical Approach To Depuration, Bruce J. Neilson

VIMS Articles

Two equations can be written to describe the change in bacterial concentrations in the shellfish and the water in depuration units. Analytical solutions of these equations for special conditions and numerical solutions for general conditions indicate that there will always be an initial, rapid decrease in bacteria in the oysters during depuration. With suitable flow rates and loading rates, the die off will be exponential and several orders of magnitude reduction can be achieved within 72 hours. Both very low flow rates and very low loading rates increase the residence time of water in the tank, and therefore depuration will …

Occurrence Of Hematopoietic Neoplasms In Virginia Oysters (Crassostrea-Virginica), Em Frierman

VIMS Articles

The three predominant pathogens of oysters in Virginia are the haplosporidans Minchinia costalis and M. nelsoni and the protist Dermocystidium marinum (Wood and Andrews, 1962; Haskin, Stauber, and Mackin, 1966; Mackin, Owen, and Collier, 1950).

Status And Distribution Of Alosine Stocks In Chesapeake Bay, William H. Kriete, Joseph G. Loesch

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

This paper reports the present status of the alosine stocks in Virginia and attempts to explain trends of the past 10 years. This paper is a portion of a completion report "The Biology and Management of River Herring and Shad in Virginia," in partial fulfillment of Contract No. 04-5-043-11 with the National Marine Fisheries Service.

Anadromous Fishes Of The Potomac Estuary, John V. Merriner

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

Anadromous fishes have been and continue to be important members of the ichthyofauna within the tidal waters of the Potomac River and other tributaries of Chesapeake Bay in the ecological, commercial, recreational and aesthetic sense. Attributes of the Potomac River basin and its waters have been described in several earlier presentations and shall be cited herein only as they apply to anadromous fishes.

Oyster Spatfall On Shellstrings In Virginia Rivers: 1975 Annual Summary, Dexter S. Haven, Paul C. Kendall Jan 1976

Oyster Spatfall On Shellstrings In Virginia Rivers: 1975 Annual Summary, Dexter S. Haven, Paul C. Kendall

Reports

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) conducts weekly surveys from June through early October to obtain oyster spatfall information. Spat counts are made from oyster shells strung on wire and · suspended from stakes on public and private beds. The number of spat on shells are counted each week of the spawning season to determine the potential of a particular area for receiving a strike and to predict the most likely period the strikes will occur. Shells .planted just before the period of maximum set have the best chance of getting a good strike.

The Shellfish Fisheries Of The Potomac River, Dexter S. Haven Jan 1976

The Shellfish Fisheries Of The Potomac River, Dexter S. Haven

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

The Potomac and its tributaries support many species of molluscs which are important sources of food for benthic invertebrates, fish, and waterfowl. However, only two species, the American oyster Crassostrea virginica and the soft clam Mya arenaria are harvested for commercial purposes. A third species, the brackish water clam Rangia cuneata occurs locally in tremendous concentrations, but it is not utilized as a food source. Nevertheless, this species is regarded as a potential source of food for people.

During the past six to eight years, commercial landings of both the oyster and the soft clam have dropped from high to …
