Computer Analysis Of Cross Sections Of Leaves Of Chrysothamnus Taxa And Their Relation To Environmental Conditions, J. Huang, W. M. Hess, D. J. Weber, E. D. Mcarthur, S. E. Meyer, R. Seegmiller Jul 1988

Computer Analysis Of Cross Sections Of Leaves Of Chrysothamnus Taxa And Their Relation To Environmental Conditions, J. Huang, W. M. Hess, D. J. Weber, E. D. Mcarthur, S. E. Meyer, R. Seegmiller

Great Basin Naturalist

Thirty-eight accessions of 20 taxa (species and subspecies) of Chrysothamnus from a range of environments were grown in a uniform garden. During mid-June, terminal and lateral leaves were removed, fixed, and processed for light-microscopy studies. Area and perimeter measurements of ink tracings of midleaf vein cross sections were measured using computer-scan techniques. Leaf area and perimeter were compared with vein perimeter and area measurements. Area and perimeter of these Chrysothamnus leaves varied in response to the environment at the collection location. Plants native to hot, dry conditions had small, thick leaves, whereas plants native to cooler, more mesic conditions had …

Mandibular Dentition In Six Species Of Salamanders, Genus Plethodon (Caudata: Plethontidae), From Arkansas Using Scanning Electron Microscopy, Richard A. Atwill, Stanley E. Trauth

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The mandibular (dentary) dentition of six species of Plethodon (P. caddoensis, P. dorsalis, P. fourchensis, P. glutinosus, P. ouachitae, and P. serratus) from Arkansas was studied using scanning electron microscopy. In all species, the mandibular teeth were bicuspid, and each tooth possessed a prominent labial cusp and a well-developed, inward-curving lingual cusp. All species showed similar tooth crown features, except P. caddoensis which exhibited a reduced tooth height and a reduced lingual cusp (only slightly larger than the labial cusp). We compared our data with other studies on premaxillary, maxillary, and palatal teeth in Plethodon and found overall similarities in …

New Initiatives In Processing Australian Sheep Skins, P G. Frapple

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Australia's exports of 313 million preserved sheep and lamb skins were valued at $A261.2 million FOB (free on board) in 1986-87. Just over 40 per cent (13.1 million) of these skins went to France for fellmongering, which is the process of removing wool from skins, leaving a bare pelt suitable for tanning. The balance went to other countries including Yugoslavia, Spain and West Germany, mainly for tanning with the wool on.

Northern And Southern Brook Lampreys (Ichthyomyzon Fossor And I. Gagei) In Minnesota, Philip A. Cochran, Timothy C. Pettinelli

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

ABSTRACT - The presence of two species of brook lampreys, genus lchtbyomyzon, in Minnesota was confirmed. The northern brook lamprey (1 f ossor) occurs in the Blackhoof River of the lake Superior drainage. The southern brook lamprey (1 gagei)was found in the St. Croix River drainage above Taylors Falls. At least three microhabitats are used by 1 gagei during its life cycle. Adults prior to spawning are found in crevices beneath boulders in deep, fast water; spawning is associated with gravel substrate at the head of riffies; and larvae burrow in fine substrate in quiet water. The reproductive biology of …

Cereal Straw And Stubble For Sheep Feed, E M. Aitchison Jan 1988

Cereal Straw And Stubble For Sheep Feed, E M. Aitchison

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Many farmers in Western Australia run sheep in addition to their cropping programmes. The resulting cereal straws and stubbles are therefore important as sheep feed during summer and autumn. During this period the diet must provide sufficient energy to maintain liveweight, but additional energy and protein may be required for young stock and pregnant or lactating ewes, and to reduce problems from tender wool.

An Evaluation Of Cattle Types For The East Kimberley, David Pratchett, Mick Carrick, Stuart Young Jan 1988

An Evaluation Of Cattle Types For The East Kimberley, David Pratchett, Mick Carrick, Stuart Young

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The first cattle to be introduced to Western Australia's Kimberley region arrived at Ord River Station in 1884, after Nathaniel Buchanan had walked 4000 head of Shorthorn cattle overland from Queensland, on behalf of the owners, Osmond and Panton.

In the early years of the Kimberley pastoral industry the virgin pastures allowed stock numbers to increase rapidly. Little consideration was given to stock or rangeland management, or to whezther other types of cattle could be raised for improved production.

The Department of Agriculture started a comprehensive trail at Ord Regeneration Research Station (previously Ord River Station) in 1980 to evaluate …

Toe Tip Morphology In Six Species Of Salamanders, Genus Ambystoma (Caudata: Ambystomatidae) From Arkansas Using Scanning Electron Microscopy, Stanley E. Trauth, J. D. Wilhide

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The toe tip friction surface in six species of Ambystoma (A. annulatum, A.maculatum, A.opacum, A. talpoideum, A. texanum, and A. tigrinum) from Arkansas was examined using scanning electron microscopy. We found no sexual dimorphism in cell surface ultrastructure. Variation within and between species was considerable. The most active burrower, A. tigrinum, possessed the most disorganized cell surface, whereas the least active burrowers (A.annulatum, A.maculatum, and A. opacum) had morphologically similar and relatively smooth toe tips. In A. talpoideum and A. texanum, cell surfaces exhibited microprojections. Only these two species possessed mucous pores in close proximity to the friction surface. The …

Comments On Estimating Population Rate Of Increase From Age Frequency Data, C. Renn Tumlison, V. Rick Mcdaniel

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Although many papers have described assumptions and calculations of r from different kinds of data, none has compared estimates of r for the same real data set under different assumptions. We used the age distributions of gray foxes collected during six trapping seasons to estimate and compare r and lₓ series derived under different assumptions. Because trapped foxes are killed, they are believed by some to represent death history data. We found this treatment underestimates mortality so overestimates survivorship and leads to erroneous conclusions about the population. Use of a projection matrix allowed prediction of population size and thus allowed …

Eggtooth Development And Morphology In The Six-Lined Racerunner Cnemidophorus Sexlineatus (Sauria: Teiidiae) Using Scanning Electron Microscopy, Stanley E. Trauth

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Eggtooth development and morphology in the six-lined racerunner, Cnemidophorus sexlineatus, were examined using scanning electron microscopy. The anlage of the embryonic eggtooth emerges from the anterior surface of the palate relatively late during embryonic development. The eggtooth proper erupts through an epithelial sheath and grows anteriorly to project beyond the rostral scale. The mature eggtooth is hollow, has a wall made of enamel and dentine, possesses a sharply-curved body and has a flattened, pointed tip. The eggtooth is shed within several days after the young hatch.

Forest Habitat Use By White-Tailed Deer In The Arkansas Coastal Plain, T. B. Wigley Jr., M. E. Garner

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Forest habitat use by five radio-equipped white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) was monitored in the Arkansas Coastal Plain during 1982-84. The deer were located 821 times. Use of forest types was compared to expected use as calculated from availability. The study area was also divided into 491 two-hectare cells for which timber characteristics and number of deer locations were determined. Pine sawtimber was the most heavily used forest type in all seasons and was used more often than expected during spring. Also used more than expected were brushy areas (clearcut but not site prepared) during spring, summer and fall and openings …

Sex Ratios In Bobcat Populations, C. Renn Tumlison, V. Rick Mcdaniel Jan 1988

Sex Ratios In Bobcat Populations, C. Renn Tumlison, V. Rick Mcdaniel

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Reported sex ratios in bobcat populations have suggested great variation ranging from strong male bias to strong female bias. Explanations offered for these observations have included factors of mobility, activity, behavior, inaccurate data collection, hunting pressure, and population density. Ratios are probably most representative during the winter, when females are no longer under constraints of parental care. Sex determination should be made by experienced observers and preferably through internal examination. The most productive direction for interpretation of validated ratios appears to be in terms of population density, hunting pressure, and the timing of harvest.

Quality Milk: A Veterinarian's Viewpoint (1988), D.A. Reid

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

I would like to thank the organizers of this program for the opportunity to speak to you today on a subject that I feel is of the utmost importance to the dairy industry in the U.S. The problem to which I am referring is not the current devastating drought that has affected many of the dairy-producing areas in our country, but rather the repercussions of the dairy industry's inability to market a wholesome uncontaminated product that is viewed as such by a majority of the consumers in the U.S. I am sure that most of us here can remember the …

The Evaluation Of Rapid Methods For Monitoring Free Fatty Acid Levels In Cheese (1988), W.G. Ikins, H.S. Kwak, G.S. Zink, I.J. Jeon

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

The amount of free fatty acids present in cheese is important to dairy processors because these compounds make a significant contribution to the overall flavor. In this study, the results obtained using three relatively rapid methods of determining free fatty acids concentrations in cheese were compared to those acquired by using a more laborious but accurate gas chromatographic technique. One method, the Extraction-Titration Method, was found to be superior to the others because of its simplicity and reliability. In addition, the values obtained by this method were found to closely correlate with short chain fatty acid concentrations of cheese as …

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

Forty newborn bull calves were assigned to one of four feeding groups. The feeds either contained lasalocid in milk (M), prestarter (PS), and starter (S); lasalocid in PS and S; lasalocid in S only; or no lasalocid. Calves were fed M at 8% of birth weight (bw) daily and offered PS to a maximum of 0.5 lb daily. When 0.5 lb of PS was consumed in one day the calves were fed M at 4% of bw daily. They were weaned when they consumed dry feed at the rate of 1.3% of bw. Daily feed intake and weekly weight gains …

Errors In Heat Detection Are Costly (1988), Jeffrey S. Stevenson Jan 1988

Errors In Heat Detection Are Costly (1988), Jeffrey S. Stevenson

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

Attention to heat detection will decrease reproduction losses and costs associated with extended calving intervals and high culling rates. Errors in diagnosing heat (errors of commission) and missed heats (errors of omission) are the major errors of a heat detection program. Priority must be given to heat detection to improve reproductive efficiency and reduce the costs of reproductive failure on dairy farms.; Dairy Day, 1988, Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS, 1988;
