Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) contributes to the antioxidant mechanisms that prevent lipoprotein oxidation and act as a negative acute-phase protein. This study aimed to evaluate changes in serum PON1 activity, the leukocyte PON1 gene expression, as well as lipid profile tests (LDL, HDL, triglyceride, and cholesterol) in 16 healthy Darehshori newborn foals up to 60 days of life. Blood samples were collected at 1, 7, 15, 30, and 60 days used for detecting biochemical parameters, PON1 activity, and, and its gene expression, using realtime RT-PCR. Low levels of PON1 activity were observed at birth, which increased significantly with increasing age at …

A Stereological Study On Lumbosacral Segments Of Spinal Cord In The Geese, Gamze Çakmak, Zafer Soygüder

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, we aimed to determine the number, volume, and lumbosacral enlargement of the lumbosacral segments using stereology methods. In accordance with the study, 10 adult geese (regardless of sex) which were healthy and weighing 3-4 kg was chosen. After the geese had been perfused with 10% formaldehyde, the lumbosacral parts of their spinal cord were revealed by dissection. After each segment of the lumbosacral section had been separated, tissue samples were obtained from these segments. By means of a microtome, sections of 5-μm thickness were taken from the tissue samples. Then, twelve sections were obtained from a lumbosacral …

The Effect Of Different Ram Introducing Procedures (Protocol 66) On Fertility Parameters In Anatolian Merino Ewes During Breeding Season, Şükrü Dursun

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, different applications of ram introduction at the beginning of the breeding season were investigated in terms of their effects on some fertility parameters. The rams were introduced to the herd (Farm II), removed for 6 days, and reintroduced again in the experiment group, while the rams stayed within the herd (Farm I) all of the breeding season in the control group. In both farms, ewes were hand mated. These practices were performed in two consecutive breeding seasons of 2014 and 2015. In farm II, in the following 13 days of the reintroduction of rams, 83.4% and 83.7% …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Dirofilaria immitis (D. immitis); is a parasitic zoonosis with a prevalence of 53.8%, whose intermediate host is mosquitoes (Anopheles, Aedes, Culex, Taeniorhychus, Mansonia and Armigenes), final hosts are carnivores (dog, cat, fox, etc.) and humans. The causative agent settles in the pulmonary arteries and causes pulmonary hypertension, which can progress to congestive heart failure. Cardiac troponins (cTn), which have recently been used in veterinary cardiology, are considered the gold standard because of their high sensitivity and specificity for myocardial injury. In the study, high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) and high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I (hs-cTnI) levels in healthy …

Determination Of Acrylamide Using The Immuno-Enzymatic Method In Commercial Dog And Cat Foods, Ni̇met Kiliç, Bi̇lal Cem Li̇man Jan 2022

Determination Of Acrylamide Using The Immuno-Enzymatic Method In Commercial Dog And Cat Foods, Ni̇met Kiliç, Bi̇lal Cem Li̇man

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Pet animals raised by humans do not have the chance to choose their own food. Therefore, mistakes made by humans in feeding dogs and cats will adversely affect the health of the animal. There are applications at high temperatures at various stages during the production of dog and cat foods. It is predicted that acrylamide (AA) can be formed as a result of a possible Maillard reaction since the cat and dog foods contain starch in its structure. The aim of this study is to determine the AA residue immuno-enzymatically in dry cat and dog feeds from different companies available …

Typing Of Rarely Isolated Salmonella Serotypes With Mlst, Seyyi̇de Sariçam İnce, İnci̇ Başak Müştak, Hami̇t Kaan Müştak

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Salmonellosis caused by nontyphoidal Salmonella is the second most common zoonotic infection worldwide. The major foodborne route of this infection is the consumption of contaminated poultry meat and egg. Therefore, monitoring and control of Salmonella agents in poultry populations is critical to reduce the risks for public health. In the poultry industry, the most common serotypes in Salmonella infections are Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serotype Enteritidis and Typhimurium. In recent years, other frequently isolated Salmonella serotypes have also increased in Turkey because of the Salmonella control programs regulated by many countries. Hence, other Salmonella serotypes (except for the most frequently …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Classical procedures for semen evaluation in breeding soundness examination require time and are costly. The evaluation techniques with CASA are limited due to the lack of standardization among laboratories and data analysis methods. Recent studies have contradictory conclusions on the actual predictive ability of this method alone regarding fertility. Finding a simple and objective test that can give the maximum correlation between in vitro and in vivo results has been the main focus of novel research. In this study, we aimed to develop a repeatable protocol of sperm adhesion test using oviductal explant (AOC) and the results were compared with …
