The Effects Of Season And Chick Sex On Certain Performance Parameters In Commercialturkey Farms In The Aegean Region, Gündüz İlsever, Pembe Di̇lara Keçi̇ci̇, Bülent Eki̇z

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of season and sex on the production efficiency of commercial turkey farms in the Aegean Region. The data of 1161 production periods (570 male and 591 female) on 139 turkey farms between 2008 and 2017 were analysed. Daily feed consumption, feed conservation ratio (FCR), average daily gain (ADG), performance index, and carcass weight (P < 0.001) were higher in males than females. While males and females had a similar mortality rate in the first week (P > 0.05), the mortality rate in the later stages was higher in males (P < 0.001). The mortality rate in the initial period was highest in production periods that began in winter and lowest in those that began in summer (P < 0.001). The total mortality rate was higher in the autumn group than in the spring and summer groups (P < 0.001). Rearing season × sex interaction had a significant influence on the performance characteristics investigated in the study, except for mortality rates and survival. In males, FCR was lower in the autumn and winter groups than that of the spring and summer groups (P < 0.05). The highest ADG values were observed in the summer group for males and in the winter group for females. The best performance index was in the summer group in males, and the lowest performance index was observed in the autumn group for both males and females. In conclusion, environmental arrangements are needed in order to reduce the mortality rate and improve performance in production periods that began in autumn and winter.

Improving the immune response is important for many reasons such as vaccine failure, immunosuppressive diseases, and antibiotics misuse. Research on materials likely to have immune-enhancing effects has been on the rise. Factors, substances, or compounds that can regulate different functions of the immune system can be used to enhance specific and even nonspecific responses to vaccines. Different amounts (0, 25, 50, and 100 μg) of Staphylococcus aureus extracellular products (SECP) were injected subcutaneously to different groups of chickens during the first vaccination against avian influenza (AI) and Newcastle disease (ND) viruses to investigate the effect of SECP on innate and …

Oxidative Stress In Calves With Enzootic Pneumonia, Mustafa Özbek, Cumali̇ Özkan

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was performed to evaluate the oxidative stress in calves with enzootic pneumonia. Ninety calves that were 2?6 months old were used in this study. Ten of these calves were healthy and used as the control group, while 80 were diagnosed with enzootic pneumonia according to the clinical examinations. The biochemical results showed that total oxidant status (TOS), nitric oxide (NO), malondialdehyde (MDA), and sialic acid (SA) levels were higher in calves with enzootic pneumonia than in the control group. While there was a statistically significant increase in TOS, MDA, and SA concentrations, there was not any statistically significant …

How Consumers' Consciousness And Perception Levels Affect Purchase Intention Of Organicchicken Meat In Turkey, Bi̇lge Acar Bolat, Ferhan Kaygisiz, Di̇ren Bulut

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The main purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of consumers' consciousness levels through their perception levels on purchase intention towards organic chicken meat. While consciousness levels of organic chicken meat were handled in terms of animal welfare awareness and health, perception levels were dealt with in terms of food safety, price, and benefit. Structural equation modeling was used to find out which factors have a significant effect on purchase intention. As a result of the analysis, it was found that consumers' animal welfare awareness had a positive effect on food safety perception and health consciousness had a …

Seasonal Variations In Histomorphology And Histochemistry Of The Prostate Gland Ofbuffalo Bulls, Samikshya Sarangi, Anuradha Gupta, Neelam Bansal, Varinder Uppal

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The prostate glands of buffalo bulls were collected from an abattoir immediately after slaughter and were fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin for paraffin block preparation by an acetone-benzene schedule. Paraffin sections of 3-5 μm were obtained on glass slides with a rotary microtome and were stained with various histomorphological and histochemical stains. The distributions of glandular acini and ducts were variable throughout the length of the pelvic urethra. The disseminate part of the prostate gland was derived from the epithelium of the pelvic urethra and was a compound tubulo-alveolar type of gland. The glandular acini comprised three types of …

Herbal Feed Additives Containing Tannins: Impact On In Vitro Fermentation And Methanemitigation From Total Mixed Ration, Manju Wadhwa, Prabh Kaur Sidhu, Mohinder Pal Singh Bakshi Jan 2020

Herbal Feed Additives Containing Tannins: Impact On In Vitro Fermentation And Methanemitigation From Total Mixed Ration, Manju Wadhwa, Prabh Kaur Sidhu, Mohinder Pal Singh Bakshi

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Total mixed ration (TMR) containing roughage and concentrate mixture in a 65: 35 ratio on dry matter (DM) basis was supplemented with herbal feed additives [(HFAs); Acacia catechu (Katha), Areca catechu (Supari), and Acacia nilotica (Babul)] at 0-4% on DM basis to assess their impact on fermentation pattern and methane production by using in vitro gas production technique. Areca catechu had the highest (P < 0.01) concentration of condensed tannins (CTs), saponins, and vitamin C as compared to other HFAs. The net gas production (NGP), digestibility of NDF and true OM, and ME availability, partitioning factor (PF), volatile fatty acids (VFAs), and microbial biomass production were higher (P < 0.01) at 24 h as compared to t-half incubation, irrespective of type and level of HFAs supplemented. Acacia nilotica had an edge over Acacia catechu with respect to digestibility of nutrients and ME availability. VFAs production and efficiency of rumen fermentation was the highest from the Areca catechu-supplemented TMR. Irrespective of type of HFAs and incubation period, the digestibility of NDF and that of true OM were highest (P < 0.01) at the 1% level of supplementation, but depressed thereafter. Amongst HFAs-supplemented groups, VFA production and fermentation efficiency were highest at the 2% level. The results conclusively revealed that supplementing Areca catechu and Acacia nilotica at 2% of TMR (DM basis) inhibited the methane production, without affecting the fermentation pattern.

Sheep Welfare During Transport And Slaughter In Bulgaria - Impact Of Welfare On Slaughter Carcass And Meat Quality: A Review, Nikolay Todorov Ivanov

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The present work aimed to review the state of sheep welfare in Bulgaria during transportation and slaughter and to evaluate its relationship with slaughter carcass and meat quality. Over the last few years, animal welfare has become increasingly important. Normative documents related to welfare during rearing, transport, and slaughter of animals have been developed and promulgated. A major percentage of these animals are reared for meat production, but attempts to minimize stress and pain during transport and slaughter should be made. Stress reduction and pain control improve animal welfare and also impact carcass and meat quality. This overview demonstrates that …

Hemostasis is stopping bleeding in a controlled manner whereas coagulation is a series criterion and to diagnose disorders caused by coagulation in an early period is to determine the coagulation time. These phases are controlled with various tests. In this study, the aim is to determine some coagulation parameters in Sivas Kangal dogs by taking the age and sex into consideration. Coagulation is vitally important in many physiological and pathological cases. The most important tests, complete blood count with peripheral blood smear, prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), and D-dimer fibrin degradation product assay were applied to all …
