Filtration by suspension-feeding bivalves affects water quality and the postulated impacts include increased light penetration and enhanced benthic primary production. Such system-level predictions are extrapolated fiom still water experiments which neglect the effects of flow, seston composition, turbulent mixing and refiltration by oysters within groups. Flume experiments were used to investigate the effects of varying flow speed and seston composition on filtration capacity of oysters. Six groups of 90 oysters were used in treatments which varied concentrations of the algae Ekalassiosira weisj70grgrsie parately and in combination with inorganics; four sets of shell only controls were used to evaluate hydrodynamic effects. …

Juvenile indices are employed in fisheries management to predict the future abundance of harvestable adults. Frequently, regulations on the utilization of the resource, and a lack of fishery independent abundance data, make verification of the prediction accuracy impossible. In the case of white perch in Virginia, this is not so. Using the weighting system developed for a Chesapeake Bay-wide index of juvenile striped bass abundance based on summertime beach seine data collected in nursery ground waters, we developed a similar index for white perch in the Virginia portion of the Bay. The 243,000 acres of Virginia's public oyster reefs (a.k.a. the Baylor Grounds) have been extremely productive of usable and saleable (market .md seed) oysters (Crassostrea virginica), oyster shells and oyster shell by-products. Archaeological remains and historical records show that they have yielded great numbers of whole oysters, oyster meats, oyster "seed" and shell since the 01esapeake was formed some 3,000 years BP. In the last century their natural productivity, as indicated by commercial harvest records (the only long-term data available), has declined markedly. In 1904, Vrrginia's total market (adult) oyster harvest was about 7.6 million bushels (mostly from public grounds). …

Clam culture in-Virginia has recently received a ·great deal of attention due to the declining production of wild fishery stocks, and to the apparent success of some commercial clam farms. A 1994 survey of Virginia aquaculture by the Virginia Agricultural Statistics Service identified hard clams as the most valuable cultured product in the Commonwealth; production in 1993 exceeded $11 million in gross sales.

Be wary of reports that clam farming is easy and guarantees financial rewards. Farming clams is much more complicated than throwing clams overboard and returning a few years later to harvest them for market. The financial risks …

During spring 1990 and 1991, ichthyoplankton surveys were conducted in lower Chesapeake Bay to estimate seasonal egg production, population biomass and the impact of predation by gelatinous zooplankton on early life stages of black drum, Pogonias cromis. Rearing experiments indicated that at least three species of sciaenid (silver perch, Bairdiella chrysoura; weakfish, Cynoscion regalis and P. cromis) were spawning in the survey area during both years. Specific identification of eggs based on previously published ranges of outside egg diameter (OED) were not reliable due to considerable overlap in diameter distributions. Numerous studies have investigated the disease processes of Perkinsus marinus in the oyster, Crassostrea virginica. However, the transmission dynamics and factors affecting P. marinus infection are still unclear. The objectives of this study were to investigate: (1) the principal and most effective lifestage of P. marinus, (2) the synergistic effects of temperature, salinity and P. marinus dose on disease prevalence, (3) suppression of host reactive oxygen intermediates by P. marinus, (4) the localization of acid phosphatase in the parasite, (5) the effects of temperature and salinity on acid phosphatase secretion, and (6) the P. marinus lipid and fatty acid composition. …

There has been a growing interest in the commercial aquaculture of striped bass, Morone saxatilis. Little is known, however, about the nutritional requirements and feeding physiology of striped bass larvae. The objectives of this study were (a) to evaluate the efficiency of the live food enrichment techniques in studying the nutritional requirements for polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), phospholipids and free amino acids, (b) to determine the ontogenetic changes of lipolytic enzymes, and (c) to develop a microencapsulated diet for striped bass larvae as full or partial replacement of live food. The blue crab, Callinectes sapiclus, fishery has been one of the most important fisheries of Virginia. The importance of the fishery in terms of commercial activities has substantially increased in recent years in response to declining resource levels of American Oyster, Crassostrea virginica, and a growing international and domestic demand for soft crabs, female hard crabs, and crab meat.

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science has conducted a monitoring program of the juvenile finfish in the Chesapeake Bay tributary rivers of Virginia since 1955, the striped bass spawning rivers since 1967 and the main stem Chesapeake Bay since 1988. These data are used to develop juvenile indices for several recreationally important species including spot, croaker, summer flounder, weakfish, black seabass and striped bass. The indices are important as both an index of recruitment success and effectiveness of management actions and are used in interstate Fishery Management Plans (FMP's) by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) and the Chesapeake …

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) has conducted a juvenile striped bass seine survey from 1967 through 1973 and from 1980 through the present. The primary objective has been the monitoring of the relative annual recruitment success of juvenile striped bass in the spawning and nursery areas of Lower Chesapeake Bay. The survey was funded in it's initial period by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and then reinstated in 1980 with funding from the National Marine Fisheries Service under the Emergency Striped Bass Study program.
