Compared Productivity Of Local Ecotypes And Selected Cultivars Of Perennial Ryegrass (Lolium Perenne) In High Belgium, P Limbourg, Ph Lecomte

The objective of the trials was to compare the productivity of local ecotypes of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) issued from old permanent pastures of High Belgium to that of adapted cultivars. During 3 consecutive years 2 local ecotypes were compared, in pure seedling at 2 different levels of nitrogenous manure, to 2 cultivars frequently used in seed mixtures for pastures. Results obtained using a cutting cycle wich simulated grazing did not reveal significant differences in terms of forage production or feeding value. Water pollution, especially eutrophication, has become a serious world-wide problem in recent years. On the other hand, forage is in short supply during the dry season in Asia (especially in Southeast Asia). The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of new forage resources from among aquatic plants. In conclusion, it is suggested that three emergent plants (Zizania latifolia Turcz., Pontederia cordata L., Paspalum distichum L.) are useful as new forage species because of their absorptive ability for nitrogen and phosphorus from eutrophic water and their superior feeding value following ensiling.

An accession of the annual legume Trigonella balansae Boiss. and Reuter. has been selected for commercial release in Australia. The annual legume has significant potential as a self-regenerating pasture within mixed farming systems. As part of a duty-of-care assessment, we tested the hypothesis that sheep grazing the trigonella cultivar will have similar liveweight, condition scores, health and wool production to sheep grazing two widely adopted annual legumes, subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L. cv Dalkeith) and French serradella (Ornithopus sativus Brot. cv. In south-western Australia 10% or 1.8 million ha of the farmed area is affected by dryland salinity and a further 6 million ha are at risk of salinity (NLWRA, 2001). Animal production from saltbush (Atriplex spp.)-based pasture systems represents the most likely large-scale opportunity for productive use of saline land in the short to medium term. Feeding saltbush-based pastures as a maintenance feed during the prolonged autumn feed gap typical in Mediterranean-type climates maximises their economic value. The aim of this study was to explore the diversity and nutritive value of plants that typically persist in saltbush-based saltland pastures.

There is an increasing demand for information on the quality characteristics and chemical composition of forages in order to meet the demands of dietary specifications for feeding animals. Near Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy provides a tool for rapid and non-destructive analysis in agronomic and breeding programs of a number of chemical components of forages and grains. NIR spectroscopy in particular has the advantage of being able to simultaneously evaluate the samples for a number of qualitative traits of whole plants and seeds. These experiments, as originally planed, had for their object the determination of the best time to cut alfalfa in order to secure the most profitable annual yield, its chemical composition, digestibility and the results of feeding trials being considered. A comparison of the yield and feeding value of the first, second and third crops was also made a part of the investigation, and as with the different cuttings, the composition and digestibility formed a part of the work.
