Agronomic And Economic Comparison Of Potential Winter Oilseed Species And Varieties For Tennessee, Stefanie B. Keadle May 2023

Agronomic And Economic Comparison Of Potential Winter Oilseed Species And Varieties For Tennessee, Stefanie B. Keadle

Masters Theses

Winter oilseed crops are annual cool season Brassica crops which fit well within typical corn and soybean rotations. They are currently being adopted in Midwestern conventional agriculture systems. The ability to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from oil pressed from the seeds is the driving force of recent interest in the crops. The three main crops of interest in this study are canola (Brassica napus), pennycress (Thlaspi arvense L.), and camelina (Camelina sativa). To determine if production of winter oilseeds is feasible in Tennessee, three experiments were conducted. First, a field study variety trial was …

Harvest Method, Cultivar, And Time Of Swathing Effects On Yield And Oil Content Of Winter Canola, M. J. Stamm, S. J. Dooley, K. L. Roozeboom Jan 2019

Harvest Method, Cultivar, And Time Of Swathing Effects On Yield And Oil Content Of Winter Canola, M. J. Stamm, S. J. Dooley, K. L. Roozeboom

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

Producers want to achieve the highest yield and oil content possible using either swathing or direct cutting to harvest winter canola. Multi-year experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of harvest method (swathing versus direct cutting) and cultivar on seed moisture, yield, and oil content; and to evaluate the effects of swathing timing on yield and oil content. The harvest method experiments were conducted for two seasons at the Redd Foundation Field near Partridge, KS. The time of swathing experiments were conducted for two seasons near Manhattan, KS. In 2016 and 2017, harvest method had a significant effect on seed …

Canola Agronomy Research In Western Australia, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia, Jackie Bucat, Andrew Blake

Bulletins 4000 -

The Tactical Break Crop Agronomy Project and the Achieving Stable and High Canola Yield Across the Rainfall Zones of WA Project were initiatives originating from a Western Panel Spring Tour of the low rainfall zone. The panel was focussed on investing in research and development to support the expansion of canola into low-medium rainfall zones where it could be incorporated into short-phase cropping systems. The importance of managing nitrogen application in soil with declining organic matter as farms moved from a long pasture phase system was paramount. Furthermore, understanding the management changes required to transition from OP to hybrid canola …

Effect Of Residue Management, Row Spacing, And Seeding Rate On Winter Canola Establishment, Winter Survival, And Yield, B. M. Showalter, K. Roozeboom, M. J. Stamm, R. Figger Jan 2017

Effect Of Residue Management, Row Spacing, And Seeding Rate On Winter Canola Establishment, Winter Survival, And Yield, B. M. Showalter, K. Roozeboom, M. J. Stamm, R. Figger

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

Winter survival of canola (Brassica napusL.) is a challenge for producers using high-residue, no-tillage, or reduced-tillage systems. An innovative residue management system being developed by AGCO Corporation was compared to cooperating canola producers’ residue management and planting methods in wheat stubble. This series of on-farm experiments was conducted in 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 at ten locations in central and south-central Kansas. The AGCO treatments were 20- or 30-in. row spacing and three seeding rates (100,000, 150,000, and 200,000 seeds/a) for a total of six treatments. The producer treatment at each location included row spacing, seeding rate, and residue management …

Do Winter Canola Hybrids And Open-Pollinated Varieties Respond Differently To Seeding Rate?, B. M. Showalter, K. Roozeboom, M. J. Stamm, G. Cramer Jan 2017

Do Winter Canola Hybrids And Open-Pollinated Varieties Respond Differently To Seeding Rate?, B. M. Showalter, K. Roozeboom, M. J. Stamm, G. Cramer

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

Several producers have turned to planting canola in 30-in. rows as a strategy to take advantage of residue management options (e.g. planter-mounted residue managers and strip tillage) to facilitate planting canola in high-residue cropping systems. Canola hybrids are gaining acres in the southern Great Plains and may require different management than the traditional open-pollinated cultivars. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of seeding rate on winter survival and yield of hybrid and open-pollinated winter canola cultivars in 30-in. and 9-in. rows. Experiments were conducted in 2013-2014, 2014-2015, and 2015-2016 at two K-State Research and Extension facilities. …

Genetically Modified Canola Trials In 2009, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia Feb 2010

Genetically Modified Canola Trials In 2009, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia

Research Reports

During 2009, just over 860 hectares of Roundup Ready® canola were grown in Western Australia enabled by an exemption order under the Genetically Modified Crops Free Areas Act 2003. The aim of the trials was to establish whether GM canola could be segregated from non-GM canola along the WA supply chain, and whether GM canola was agronomically viable for WA farming systems. This was the first time genetically modified canola had been grown on a commercial scale in WA - earlier exemptions for smaller trials had been for variety testing and scientific purposes.

Regional Assemblages Of Lygus (Heteroptera: Miridae) In Montana Canola Fields, Andrew W. Lenssen, R. A. Ritter, Sue L. Blodgett, M. L. Taper

Andrew W. Lenssen

Sweep net sampling of canola (Brassica napus L.) was conducted in 2002 and 2003 to determine Lygus (Heteroptera: Miridae) species composition and parasitism levels in four regions of Montana. Regardless of region or seasonal change, Lygus elisus (Van Duzee) was the dominant species in all canola fields sampled, averaging 60–99% of the total adult populations. Lygus borealis (Kelton), Lygus keltoni (Schwartz) and Lygus lineolaris (Palisot) were detected at much lower levels. Total lygus population density was greatest in the southwest and central regions. The northeast and southwest regions had the greatest lygus species diversity. The proportion of L. elisus increased …
