Memories Of Life On The Farm: Through The Lens Of Pioneer Photographer J. C. Allen, Frederick Whitford, Neal Harmeyer
Purdue University Press Book Previews
John Calvin Allen, professionally known as J. C., worked as a photographer for Purdue University from 1909-1952, and operated his own photography business until his death in 1976. The J. C. Allen photographs represent an historical account of the transition from pioneer practices to scientific methodologies in agriculture and rural communities. During this major transitional period for agriculture, tractors replaced horses, hybrid corn supplanted open-pollinated corn, and soybeans changed from a novelty crop to regular rotation on most farms. During this time, purebred animals with better genetic pedigrees replaced run-of-the-mill livestock, and systematic disease prevention in cattle, swine, and poultry …

1912 - The Missions Of California And The Old Southwest, Jesse S. Hildrup
Miscellaneous Documents and Reports
A publication exhorting the glory of the California and Old Southwest missions, the golden climate and the efforts by the padres to save the Indian from his primitive life and ultimately prepare them for the civilization which came later under American sovereignty. The author viewed the region as the "chosen land, so wonderfully endowed by Nature, made possible the spiritual and civilizing purposes of the Church by the very configuration of its surface, the fertility of its soil, its temperate and subtropical climates, and its abundant water, which were stored in natural reservoirs and available for lowland cultivation by the …

Geddes Wilson Simpson received an A.B. in zoology from Bucknell University in 1929 and an A.M. in insect morphology from Cornell University in 1931. In 1935 he completed a Ph.D. in economic entomology at Cornell.
In 1931, Simpson joined the staff of the Maine Agricultural Experiment Station at the University of Maine. As a research entomologist, he gained national recognition for his work on aphids, especially those affecting potato plants. In 1952, Simpson was named professor of entomology at UMaine. He remained in that position until his retirement in 1974. For many years he was editor of the Potato Association …
Water Management, Imsa Fusion
Water Management, Imsa Fusion
An Epidemiological Approach to Addressing Food Insecurity
Objectives:
- Develop a technique to measure the porosity of soil.
- Explain how a high water table can reduce crop yields.
- Design and test a drainage tiling system.
Row Spacing Models, Imsa Fusion
Row Spacing Models, Imsa Fusion
An Epidemiological Approach to Addressing Food Insecurity
Objectives:
- Identify multiple row spacing models used by soybean farmers and determine how these planting arrangements impact crop yield.
- Explore how row spacing influences the amount of access that a plant has to the natural resources it needs to grow.
- Recommend a row spacing model that considers overall yield, economic efficiency, and potential environmental threats for a hypothetical farmer.
Soil Science, Imsa Fusion
Soil Science, Imsa Fusion
An Epidemiological Approach to Addressing Food Insecurity
Objectives:
- Understand that soil is composed of inorganic and organic solid material, water, and air.·Investigate the properties of the inorganic solid components of soil: sand, silt, and clay.
- Recognize that varying proportions of sand, silt, and clay in a soil impact the soil’s ability to hold and transmit water. Experimentally determine the soil texture of a local soil sample.
- Determine the chemical composition of a local soil sample for pH, nitrate, phosphorus, and potassium levels.
- Analyze a given soil’s ability to support crops such as corn, soybeans, wheat, and oats.
- Provide recommendations for amending a given soil to support the …
Biological Variation, Imsa Fusion
Biological Variation, Imsa Fusion
An Epidemiological Approach to Addressing Food Insecurity
Objectives:
- Identify different phenotypes of corn (maize) kernels.
- Use ratios and sampling to determine which of two different ears of corn is most likely to have produced a given sample of kernels.
- Use Punnett Squares to determine the genotypes of the “parents” that produced the different kernel samples.
- Compare and contrast traditional selective breeding techniques with genetically engineering a desired trait in corn.
- Model the regulation of gene expression in a hypothetical cell.
- Discuss the potential role that epigentic variation may play in improving corn crops of the future.

Southern Biosecurity Group Annual Report 2018/19, Southern Biosecurity Group
Recognised biosecurity group reports
Southern Biosecurity Group is a subgroup of the Ravensthorpe Agricultural Initiative Network (RAIN) with the mandate to coordinate control of declared pest species in the Shire of Ravensthorpe. We first began operating in 2002 as the Ravensthorpe Declared Species Group. At that time, our role involved coordinating wild dog control in the shire. We achieved good control of wild dog numbers through a range of activities including dispersing of 1080 baits, trapping and shooting.

Future of Food
In collaboration with PopTech, the Center for Complexity (CfC) hosted a two day convening in March 2019 to discuss the future of food, conducted in-the-round. Conversations-in-the-round offer an experimental and collaborative forum where a variety of perspectives collide to reimagine how we should approach navigating complex challenges.
30 professionals, community leaders, ag-tech startups, policymakers, local activists, global aid administrators, and many other important voices in the food industry were in attendance. We did not set out to create solutions, rather we devoted our time to exploration — a process that allowed us to assess, discover, reality-check, and strategically plan the …

The CRBA is a not for profit association formed under the Associations Incorporation Act 2015, providing declared pest control services for land managers throughout Shark Bay, Carnarvon, Exmouth, Murchison and Upper Gascoyne Shires. The associations’ primary purpose is the control of declared pests using funding from Declared Pest Rates paid by landholders on pastoral stations. These Declared Pest Rates funds are matched dollar for dollar by the WA Government to reflect the public benefit of controlling declared pest animals and weeds. The association is formally recognised by the Hon Minister for Agriculture and Food as a recognised biosecurity group (RBG).

Biosecurity Council of Western Australia annual reports
In 2018/19 there were four key areas in which the Council focused during the year: • the attributes required by a biosecurity ‘combat’ agency to effectively sustain a biosecurity response • funding for biosecurity research and development in WA • border biosecurity; and • WA’s preparedness for myrtle rust.

Recognised biosecurity group reports
The past 12 months has seen the Eastern Wheatbelt Biosecurity Group keep up the momentum of the past few years and contribute considerably to the betterment of the state’s landholders in controlling predominately wild dogs. With landholders funding the biosecurity groups under the BAM Act through a declared pest rate it is pleasing to note that this money is hitting the ground and making a real and tangible difference through the work of the Licensed Pest Management Technicians employed by the EWBG.

Recognised biosecurity group reports
2019 has been a great time for the team at the Peel Harvey Biosecurity Group (PHBG) achieving many things to help sustain the group into the future and ensure that people in the community are aware of their pest control obligations. The team have been working very cohesively ensuring the biggest bang for every dollar is achieved. The community as a whole is understanding that the group is not the one to do the work, or be the compliance enforcer, but rather is the educator supplying guidance and resources to landholders. These resources form an asset base that belongs to …
