This fact sheet is constructed to be used by 4-H and FFA youth for training or as a tool to aid in the growing of market turkeys for the Utah Junior Turkey Show or for local turkey shows. The basics of the Utah Turkey Show are fairly simple. Poults (day old turkeys) are ordered from your 4-H agent or FFA advisor usually by mid May of the current year. Camelina sativa (L.) Crantz (camelina) is an oilseed producing plant in the Family Brassicaceae (Cruciferae) originating from the Mediterranean to Central Asia. There is increasing interest in converting waste cooking oil and oil produced from oilseed crops, such as camelina, into biofuels in order to decrease dependence on petroleum products for fuel sources. The interest for growing oilseed crops in Utah is growing as well. Camelina sativa is a low input oilseed-producing crop adapted to climates similar to central Utah. Central Utah is also home to the Utah commercial turkey industry.

The production of turkeys comprises an important part of the cash farm income in Utah. In 1951 the cash receipts from turkeys amounted to $13,986,000, or 7.4 percent of the cash income from all farm commodities (4). In the year 1951 Utah ranked seventh in the nation in turkey production (5). The production of turkeys has risen from a humble beginning to one of the important agriculture enterprises in Utah.
