Living Among Wildlife: Elevating Human-Wildlife Interactions And Coexistence, Bridget Rebecca Murphy
Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
After a semester of learning, both in class and in nature, my writing honed in further on this human-nature divide. To me, I see humans as part of nature – as we are mammals, animals, part of the food chain, biological beings no higher than others on our planet. We have simply constructed this false narrative around us within our societies, minds and media that embeds this division between us and nature, between us and wildlife. Humans have been managing, stewarding, living off and within landscapes for thousands of years. As time and technology evolved, a lot of people began …

“Why Are You Seeking Out Farm Training?” 2022 New Farmer Survey Results, Jonathan Malacarne, Christina Howard
Cooperative Extension - Agriculture
The “Why Are You Seeking Out Farm Training?” survey received 118 responses in the winter of 2022 from new and beginning farmers. According to the USDA, new and beginning farmers are people who have been farming for less than 10 years. The respondents shared their priorities on what training needs they have for the topics of ‘sales and marketing’ and ‘business management’. The plant is a perennial herb native to southern Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, Colombia, and Venezuela. It is commonly known as the Aztec sweet herb, bushy lippia, honey herb, or hierba dulce, used as a natural sweetener and medicinal herb in its native Mexico and parts of Central America. The Aztecs used it and introduced it to the Spanish when they arrived. A compound called Hernandulcin, whose sweetness is about 1,000 times higher than in sucrose, provides the plant’s sweet taste. The plant has low Hernandulcin production in its tissues. Despite its sweetness, it isn’t used in the natural sweetener …

Purple Variety Of Sweet Potato, Ming Gao
Datasets Collection
Purple sweet potatoes are versatile enough to be used in cupcakes as well as ice cream. However, when cooked in their natural state, they are dry and starchy, prompting most to use the purple sweet potatoes as flour for baked goods, or in some cases, for ice cream. Dr. Gao wants his variety of purple sweet potato to be more palatable. Gao earned the coveted USDA-National Institute of Food and Agriculture 1890 Institution Capacity Building Grant to support his research. The project will focus on developing a variety that is enjoyable in its natural state and is moist and tastefully …

An Epidemiological Approach to Addressing Food Insecurity
Objectives:
- Understand that soil is composed of inorganic and organic solid material, water, and air.·Investigate the properties of the inorganic solid components of soil: sand, silt, and clay.
- Recognize that varying proportions of sand, silt, and clay in a soil impact the soil’s ability to hold and transmit water. Experimentally determine the soil texture of a local soil sample.
- Determine the chemical composition of a local soil sample for pH, nitrate, phosphorus, and potassium levels.
- Analyze a given soil’s ability to support crops such as corn, soybeans, wheat, and oats.
- Provide recommendations for amending a given soil to support the …

An Epidemiological Approach to Addressing Food Insecurity
Objectives:
- Identify different phenotypes of corn (maize) kernels.
- Use ratios and sampling to determine which of two different ears of corn is most likely to have produced a given sample of kernels.
- Use Punnett Squares to determine the genotypes of the “parents” that produced the different kernel samples.
- Compare and contrast traditional selective breeding techniques with genetically engineering a desired trait in corn.
- Model the regulation of gene expression in a hypothetical cell.
- Discuss the potential role that epigentic variation may play in improving corn crops of the future.
