Bioprospecting, Philip A. Reed
Bioprospecting, Philip A. Reed
STEMPS Faculty Publications
The article discusses that the product applications of bioprospecting are almost limitless. This area of biotechnology has been labeled bioprospecting, and it is a practice that is creating worldwide controversy. Defined simply, bioprospecting is "scientific research that looks for a useful application, process, or product in nature." However, as with most biotechnologies, the definition does not address the complexities of bioprospecting. Archeologists are finding that some biotechnologies, such as the use of herbs for medicine and the use of fermentation and yeast in food products, date back 5,000 to 10,000 years (De Miranda, 2004). The four main categories of biotechnologies …

Commodity-Specific Effective Exchange Rates For U.S. Agriculture, Emilio Pagoulatos, Azzeddine Azzam
Commodity-Specific Effective Exchange Rates For U.S. Agriculture, Emilio Pagoulatos, Azzeddine Azzam
Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station
A number of commodity-specific effective exchange rates of relevance to U.S. agriculture have been constructed. It is hoped that data presented in this study will be of use to researchers investigating the interrelationships between the dollar exchange rate and agricultural trade. An examination of the variability properties of the various agricultural trade-weighted exchange rate indices suggests that in modeling the agricultural trade-exchange rate relationship, the volatility of the exchange rate should be considered along with its level as explanatory variables.
Agriculture Policy Decisions: A Perspective From South Dakota Farmers And Ranchers, Larry Janssen, Mark Edelman
Agriculture Policy Decisions: A Perspective From South Dakota Farmers And Ranchers, Larry Janssen, Mark Edelman
Economics Research Reports
Federal government policies greatly affect farmers and ranchers. Most South Dakota farmers and ranchers favor changes in the process used to make farm policy decisions but are split on the desirable future direction of farm commodity programs. A majority of producers favor existing or modified loan rate, target price, and farmer owned grain reserve program but are sharply divided on payment-in-kind (PIK) programs. Most producers favor the market growth provided by world trade but are not willing to give up minimum trade barriers, these barriers provide some cushion from the instability caused by international trade system. In addition, farmers are …

Implementation Of A Microprocessor Based Accounting System For Agricultural Uses, Herbert Allen, Duane Sander, James Beals
Economics Research Reports
This study has demonstrated the feasibility of using microcomputers on the farm or in the home to solve problems involving manipulation of large quantities of data or detailed mathematical procedures. A microcomputer with at least 32,000 words of memory and magnetic disk storage is recommended for efficient data processing. This capacity is required for programs of the type presented in this publication. A printer with at least an 80 character line is an essential feature. It is frequently necessary to have hard copy printouts of financial statements or cash flows in order to document the farm financial position. Programs may …

The Tax System Of Nebraska With Special Reference To Its Relation To Agriculture, L. B. Snyder
The Tax System Of Nebraska With Special Reference To Its Relation To Agriculture, L. B. Snyder
Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station
Progress in governmental affairs calls for constant study of matters pertaining to government. The recent agitation for moratoria on debts and taxes and the many tax reforms suggested are evidence of the need for such study. Before satisfactory reforms can be made, information on receipts and expenditures by governmental agencies must be secured. The expense connected with collecting, tabulating, and analyzing such data has prevented private agencies of the state from doing this. Because it was felt that such information would be useful and could be obtained by the College of Agriculture, this study was undertaken.

Effects Of Inflation And Deflation Upon Nebraska Agriculture, 1914 To 1932, H. Clyde Filley
Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station
This study attempts to give the effects of war-time inflation and the subsequent deflation upon Nebraska agriculture. It presents statistical evidence of what happened. It is too late to prevent the present depression. Information concerning the situation may aid in promoting recovery. It is hoped that a knowledge of the inflation of 1916 to 1920 and the depression following may aid in avoiding the making of similar errors in the future.
