Lifetimes: Fred Aman '67, Merging The Worlds Of Law And Music, University Of Rochester

Alfred Aman Jr. (1991-2002)

Now the holder of a named professorship at the Maurer School of Law at Indiana University Bloomington, University of Rochester Life Trustee Fred Aman '67 retired last year after a decorated career as an attorney, legal scholar, and academic administrator. Along the way, he's been an accomplished jazz drummer.

Doug Boshkoff knew immediately when he saw it. The oversized print on display at a Chicago art dealership was the perfect fit. Lichtenstein had used a neutral and cool palette and an angular design that would add a splash to even the dullest wall, and Boshkoff — a man of vision and creativity himself — knew that the Law School’s main lobby would serve as the perfect display space for the vivid print.

I want to talk about an important issue in legal education today: the role of clinical education in the law school curriculum. I hope to shed some light on that issue by looking at another professional school model-not the medical school model, which is the usual approach, but the music school model. In the February 1972 issue of PRO SE (National Law Women's Newsletter) an article entitled "Professional Rip-off" criticized the Women's Liberation Movement for producing what the authors call "grasping opportunists," "pleasant, reasonable, charming, and eternally submissive sell-out[s] " (page 4).
